Hi. I have heard that this week all non sporting imports were banned - including shotguns, rifles, everything. I searched THR and apologize if this has been discussed. This would mean that SKS's are no longer importable, semi auto shotguns, etc.
My friend, a mod at Shotgun World, said this has been up over there. Does anyone know anything about this, details, the bill, what it affects. I love SKS's, they are great rifle, shoot them all the time. I'm concerned about 1.) parts and 2.) legality if something has changed and I dont know about it. He was saying that it has to have 10 america made parts on it or something to even be legal.

Thanks,
ST

Haven't Heard, But Eventually We "know" This Will Be An eventuality.

Uh...hasn't it been that way for a while or did they start to apply this to C+R stuff as well now?

Welcome to 2007--The land of the future!

The import ban has been in effect for.. oh.. 15 years or so, parachute pants are no longer cool, and you really should consider purchasing a blackberry.

well, my name includes "mountain man" for a reason :D

So let me get this straight; Imports of semi autos are banned? How do we get so many SKS's around, and other things. Is my neighbors SKS illegal then? I thought they were ok after the death of that AWB crud; FS, folding stock, detach mag, etc...

Just needing a little help after my long nap:neener:

(I still do not have a T.V. dont plan on gettin one, nets enough, at work)

It takes a little time for information to hit the mountains.:neener:

Safe Streets Act of 1968

No such thing as a stupid question. Thanks, I learned something today since this was a little before my time. I did not know the ban went back that far.

Pursuant to the Safe Streets Act of 1968, all non-sporting firearms, and all fully automatic weapons, are prohibited from being imported, regardless of function type. In fact the provision was first proposed in the '50s as a fence by domestic firearms makers. The assassination of JFK with a WWII "milsurp" rifle added to the economic fence argument.

From 1969 on only sporting firearms were imported, including CKCs which the IRS, then became ATF, found to be sporting. As a result we have the "point system" for pistols.

In 1986 the military surplus provisions were lifted and some non-fully automatic weapons were approved for import. In March of 1989 at the direction of Drug & Morality Czar William "Come On 7" Bennett ATF reversed its sporting designation on broad range of scary-looking firearms (AK, FAL, HK91/93, AUG, etc.). CKCs were not inlcuded as non-sporting in ATF's reverse of 1989.

Ris, did a duck come down and give you $100?:D

Having just received my CDNN 2007-3 printed catalog 2-3 days ago, I had noticed the BANNED label across the high capacity semi FN shotguns with standard (non-pistol gripped) stocks. (SLP and their copy of the Winchester Practical.)

Gun Control Act of 1968

Taken from the somotimes unreliable wikipedia:confused:

In addition, the GCA created what is commonly known as the "sporting purposes" standard for all imported firearms, declaring that they must "be generally recognized as particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes," excluding surplus military firearms.

Is this correct? I noticed it states excluding surplus military firearms. If so which ban directly ceased importation of surplus beyond the use of "sporting purposes". I would think any firearm used to target shoot fits the phrase in question.

I did not know the ban went back that far.

I think the 1968 act only banned the importation of saturday-night special type handguns, whatever those are. Long arm importation wasn't curtailed until Bush Sr.'s administration.

Amazingly, the strongest supporters of the "sporting purpose" test are American gun makers.

The FN SLP was banned recently by the ATF due to a complaint from another shotgun maker that shall remain nameless. They shall also find their products remain out of my collection.

Grrr.....

John

Grayrider, any chance you'd break your code of silence and tell us who the shotgun maker is? or maybe a PM? Thanks.
