incident, need advice

I think you are making a big mistake about not reporting it. You think it will accomplish nothing, and it may not, but you will have created a paper trail that might be vital later on. I don't know the legal environment around there, but if you are in one of those over-regulated places around a city, you really should have that paper trail.

Where I live there is no animal control. If you call the police about something like this, they would laugh at you, and just say "do what you have to do".

We take care of these issues ourselves. If the dog is running lose and is acting aggressive to people or livestock, it is shot. It is not the dogs fault, it is the owners fault, but the fact remains, the dog is dead.

I love dogs and hate to do it, but I have and will again, if necessary.

I agree

This thread is quickly sliding down the stupid slope.

However, your stupid slope is on the other side of the peak, than my stupid slope.

What we have is alot of people who know nothing about the subject (dogs and dog behavior) offering opinions. Pretty typical for these threads.

Is a dogs life more valuable than a humans? Of course not! And nothing I've said reflects that. My point is that people overeact, way out of (mostly)proportion, to these "incidents".

If it makes you more of a man/woman to shoot a dog, when its unnecessary, go for it.

Exactly when did it become the responsibility of every parent to train their kids so that your dogs won’t bite them? How about keeping your dogs where they belong (collectively, not just you)? Exactly when did it become the fault of the victim when they got bit by a dog for minding their own business? It is not my responsibility to make sure your dog does not bite me, it is your responsibility to ensure that your dog does not bite me. How you do that is up to you, so long as it works and it doesn’t interfere with when, where and how I go about my business.

Sorry, I guess I forgot where it said you need to teach your children any kind of responsibility for their actions.

If I walk down the street, and I am wearing a red shirt, and some gangbanger doesn’t like the red shirt as it goes against his gang colors, when he accosts and then ultimately shoots me, did I provoke him? Did I do something to “cause the” attack?

See previous comments about dog predictabilty vs. Human predictabilty, but yes, you probably shouldn't be there in the first place. Ditto your second example. There's not much you can do about it. If it were a dog there IS something you can do about it.

Predictable? Animal behavior can be semi-predicted or perhaps forecasted, but it is not an exact science, to specifically label them predictable is a stretch
Not even a stretch here. FAR more predictable than humans, with even the most basic knowledge.

Please take the time to actually READ my posts, then read them again. Oh, sorry that's to much effort for most...

(Yes, I fully expect to get banned for this thread, simply because I actually know what I'm talking about, but knowledgeably disagree with the majority, and apparently the moderators.)

So I have it in the holster (SmartCarry) in a book bag/day pack over my shoulder. The zipper on this bag is a little hard to work, and would be even more difficult if under attack.

I'm convinced that an ineffective carry method nullifies the usefulness of a CCW. I've given SmartCarry a thought. Not anymore.

That said, I don't know if I can add anything to the advise you've already received.

IMO: You are in a tough situation and you strike me as a person who cares deeply about your children and your community. The fact is, your children are living around a time bomb (in the form of that aggressive Pitt). A video camera recording the animal's general behavior might be useful. I'd file the police report. Even at this late time. You need a paper trail. The next charging "attack" would be the last one for that animal. No pepper spray. No squirrelling around. Just BOOM BOOM BOOM. More than likely you will have to justify your defense to local LEO or a court judge. Sorry the system sucks but we all agree your kids come first. At least your not up against an protected species like an aligator.

(The above is not to be confused with legitimate legal advise. BTW - a phone call with a lawyer might be informative. Besides informing you of your rights, a letter to the neighbor with a lawyer letterhead might give them pause while not appearing to "rat them out" to local authorities)

Best of luck.

No, actually, dfaugh. You'd never be banned for disagreeing with a moderator (and how in the world you'd disagree with all the moderators, I have no idea -- we are different people after all...)

But I'm closing the thread now -- not because you and I don't see eye to eye, but because folks have started throwing around phrases like "stupid slope" and "I'm gonna get banned for this but..."

Once that happens, it's only a matter of time before someone insults someone else blatantly enough that the moderators have to ban someone. Not one of us enjoys doing that, especially when the thread that got everyone so hot under the collar is barely gun-related to start with.

So -- Closed.
