Indecisive...you decide

For $375 I can get an excellent Berreta 92FS with night sights and one hi-capacity magazine.

For about $325 I can get a CZ40 NIB.

The pros and cons just about cancel each other out, even the reloading costs. No other options apply, they are both world class pistols. My decision will be NLT Tuesday this week, please contribute your expert opinion and wisdom to make my decision.

I voted CZ. Two reasons. I like the 40cal better and I can't hit the broadside of a barn with 3 shots from the inside with a Berreta.

No experience with the CZ40 and plenty with the Beretta and Taurus platform so that's how I voted. The Beretta design is a bit on the large for me to feel comfortable concealing but other than that I have zero faults with the platform in Taurus guise.

While the CZ are a fine weapon, after 7 yrs in the Corp and using my #1 favorite ,,the Colt .45acp,we made the transition to Berretta's,and I did quite well on the national match course firing for the MCCP RP team

Since the CZ is new and you can get one at the same price later, I voted to jump on the used price for the Beretta.

Since you listed no particular reason for the purchase, I assume it is like my reasons, "because I want it".

If the CZ40 looks anything like the CZ100, I'd take the Beretta.

If it's a 75 variant, then I'm for the CZ.

If that Beretta's indeed "excellent" as you say, it's a great deal. I'd opt for that.

I have owned both and the Beretta is a much better gun. I think the CZ-40 is a nice gun but it has some problems, the rear sight tends to get loose and even with Lock Tight it won't stay long, I have not found it to be very accurate, it is very snappy even for a .40S&W, no hi-caps, asscesories are hard to come by (grips, mags, holsters), the trigger is gritty and heavy in SA, the trigger is too long for me in DA, the plastic coating they put on it is not very durable and it looks really bad when it scratches or wears, and you really have to reload if you want to save some money. The 9mm can be bought for about as cheap as reloading and there is some surplus stuff on the market also.

Good luck but if it were me, I know which one I would grab. $375 with the hi-cap is not a bad price, the hi-cap would run you about $50 so you are talking $325 for an excellent 92 with night sight, sounds like a winner.

I'm somewhat surprized at the large response for the 92FS, I'd thought its popularity had declined somewhat but it seems their are a lot of "true believers". I kinda shied away from the 92 because of its "looks" but my interest has increased after reading these posts. OK, is there any kind of trick to checking out the '92 for wear and tear unique to it? The slide is tight and the bore looks new. Thanks

Of the two, I've shot the 92FS, and it is a good gun that you have to train with to be able to shoot it well.

My preference would be for one of the NIB CZ 75BDs that I've seen in my area for around $349.00, since I have a strong preference for a gun with a decocking lever, as opposed to a manual safety.

I'd go with the Beretta. The hi-cap mag is worth around $50 alone and the night sights are worth around $150-$180 for sight and installation charges. so effectively your getting the base pistol for $175 or so. Also, like others have mentioned, it's the sidearm of the US Military and several police agencies. This means there are all kinds of accessories, spare parts, holsters and other goodies available for it. Not to mention, you should always be able to get the CZ at that price.

For only 50 bucks more, are you kidding? I'd be all over that.

Now, to the guns.
The CZ is a fine handgun, but the Beretta is a much better/higher level handgun. It's a step up from the CZ.

Go with Beretta

Keeping in mind that a member of your family already has a CZ 40, I think the answer is an easy one. As many have stated, the Beretta is a classic whith many addons easy to find. While I enjoy the CZ-40, it is extemely difficuly to find any accessories for it. Since I know you're an American Military Firearms accumilator, why not complete your collection and go for the only major 20th century military firearm your collection is missing.

Their is only one way "the funnyman" would know that I have a "close" family member (son) with a CZ40. And he is an ROTC Cadet at Ohio University waiting to try out a '92 (that he's always wanted me to get).
