Today I spent the Independence Day holiday enjoying my freedom to purchase firearms!

I received a call that an unfortunate circumstance had befallen a older man and there was a pistol that needed selling and buying. I would have felt better buying it from him, but dementia has riddled his mind and his wife came home to it taken apart on the kitchen table. He was eagerly looking for the barrel as it sat with the rest of the pieces.:(
She wanted them gone. I wasn’t really happy to oblige, but did. His brother brought it to me for purchase.

I was told before hand it was a steel nine millimeter pistol, blued, with fat magazines. Three of them.
A Smith and Wesson or something.

I didn’t mind what it was. A full size steel shooter in nine for my new progressive press was what I wanted. For $500, I couldn’t go wrong even if it needed help. But I was assured it was very nice. Not scratched up or anything.

They were right.

It was nearly perfect for being two years younger than I. Or maybe I’m a little rough for the wear?

I thought they were bigger…

There seems to be about a single box’s worth of ammunition run through it. The slide was tight and the hammer was more difficult to cock than my Desert Eagle. It has the Pachmayr grips but no wooden ones. And a nice leather holster as well.

And yes, not a single scratch adorned the beautiful finish on this 1982 production FNH manufactured Browning Hi-Power pistol!

I had to celebrate with fireworks and a Leine’s!:)

There was also a stash of factory 30-06 ammunition for $5 a box. I took all seven and a half. I took the Federals and the mixed box so that no one else attempted to fire them.
The brother wondered aloud that they would probably clean up fine. I took the time to tell him the things I learned from Slamfire.

Some of these will be taken apart. I don’t really need ammunition, or the primers, but it would be safer for them to disappear.

And a great find, one of the full boxes are 55grain Accelerators! What an awesome buy! I won’t shoot them but someone might like them as much as I’d like their money…;)

I always read about some of you lucky gentlemen coming across phenomenal deals. Even if a bit sad, I finally found one myself.

I can’t wait to put its second box through it!

Ha! My Shandy got warm!:D

Nice pickup despite the sad story. Those grips are ideal IMO for a shooter.
I really like them, but some Tulipwood stocks would be nice. Or some gloss burl of some sort.

My father has the Pachmayrs on his Ruger MKii and this pistol feels identical. I do like them. But the black…(sigh) Why is rubber always black?

Glad it could go to a good home.

Your local LE may be able to take the bad ammo. My county Sheriff uses it for bomb squad training and they are happy to receive. I have provided them several batches of Uncle Cleetus' mystery reloads than have fallen into my possession.

Now to find some ammunition!

I have a few powders and a short ton of cases, but I’ll need to keep my eyes on the Components Sources thread for small pistol primers. MBC and RMR have projectiles galore! Even factory ammunition is getting less expensive, though I am loathe to purchase it. I make better!

The worst looking cartridge was fine on the inside. I’ll be pulling them, the Federals, any way and tossing the cases. I have enough and these are ragged looking.

A win for all parties involved, sorta. Id say you got a heck of a deal. I love my belgian model HiPower. Ive got the pachmayer grips for shootin' and a pair of wood ones for lookin'.

I see that Accelerator ammo go for $60+ on auction regularly, fyi. Neat ammo, but not very accurate.

Congratulations on that beautiful pistol, condolences on the warm beer. Them fellers in Wisconsin do make summertime better…of course that BHP should make Michigan summers more tolerable as well.

What a find! I can see why your ecstatic over it. I would have have had more than one Leinenkugel's. I was partial to Honey Wiess myself.
I think you used up all your gun luck on that one. Beautiful!

I have an example made one year earlier than yours, 1991

I’m curious as to why mine has the “made in Belgium / assembled in Portugal” roll make and yours doesn’t. I believe by this time all Hi Powers were assembled in Portugal.

I seem to recall reading a post by our resident Hi Power expert @WVsig where he chalked it up to one of the vagaries of FN production.

Also, yours looks blued as apposed to mine with the matte black epoxy finish. Is that correct?

OPs gun is 1982 and is a MKII the rollmark did not change until the introduction of the MKIII around 1990. Yours is a MKIII from 1992.

Both however were most likely assembled in the same plant in Portugal.

Fantastic buy! Don't you just love the rush you get when you first lay eyes on a super deal? You should never look at the circumstance as a sad thing. I am sure the owner would rather have the gun cherished by someone close by than a guy who is buying it to flip for a profit.

When I was in the gun business a customer came in looking to sell his Dad's beloved T Series Hi Power because he couldn't take it to NY after his Dad passed. The shop offered him $600 and he turned it down. As he was leaving I mentioned he would have no trouble selling it privately as it was something anyone (including me) would want to own. I got a call a couple of hours later asking if I would be interested in buying the gun. I offered $700 and we agreed to meet after work. When we got together he said $600 would be enough. He said his Dad would have been very happy that the pistol would be going to someone who would love it like he did.

I would hope so. And cherished it will be.
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.
My boy already likes it. ;)

Glad to see you had a great deal fall into your lap. The best ones seem to pop up unexpectedly. When the time comes for me to be rid of the things that matter to me, I truly hope they matter so much to their new caretaker that they're as thrilled as you are.

Of course, I have no intention of giving such good deals...but it may not be up to me
