try a marlin XL/ XS 7 series with the barrel cut to 18 in. and have ghost ring sights put on it. a good "truck gun" type rifle. hoping to do that myself when when i have the money for it ( im 14 sooo yea)

Romanian AK, ammo is very cheap, gun is famous for being reliable, and most are under $600.

It does last longer, but the only corrosively primed 7.62x39 around in quantity these days is Yugo surplus. All the Russian 7.62x39 is non-corrosive (and non-surplus). This includes Wolf, the various Bears, Monarch (Academy), Golden Tiger (may be the best of these). The Yugo surplus gets high marks though.
The Russian surplus that is around in large quantities is 7.62x54r and 5.45x39.

If the scope is a must -- Marlin 336
If the scope is not a must -- a Finn M39 Mosin. Much more accurate than the Rusian M91/30.
If a semi is desired -- Saiga
All are work horses and will suit your all around needs and still not break the bank.

For Defense:
1. AK: Will always go bang and parts, ammo, and mags are plentifull.
2. SKS: Will always go bang, reasonably accurate, and ammo is still plentifull.
3. Saiga: Will always go bang and ammo is readily available for any of the big 3
4. Marlin 336: Accurate, Reliable, and fast handling for a non-semi-auto
5. Mosin Nagant: Ammo is still readily available but probably the slowest handling of them.
For Hunting:
1. Marlin 336: The most accurate and plenty powerful for all North American game.
2. Mosin Nagant: If rifle is accurate then plenty powerful for all NA game.
3. SKS: Accurate enough and powerful enough for most NA big game
4. Saiga: More accurate than most AKs and from 223(small to medium game) to 308(big game)
5. AK: Accurate enough within 150 yards for most big game
For All around:
1. SKS: The best ratio between defense reliability and accuracy.
2. Marlin 336: Very accurate and still fast enough for defense
3. AK: Accurate enough for closer range hunting but great for defense
4. Saiga: Accurate but due to unavailability of mags not the best for defense
5. Mosin Nagant: Although can be very accurate not very good for fast handling.
