I've been mulling over the idea of putting together a pistol carbine AR in a commando length either 45 ACP or 10mm Auto. The HK USC seems impressive, but it seems that I can build what I want for under $1000. . . Far under the price of a UMP conversion.

I have 45 ACP brass and ammo, but the 10mm ballistics seem impressive. Also checked out the Bazooka bros. and Olympic offerings.

Does anyone have experience with these?

Just tonight I put together a .45 ACP AR-15 using an Oly top on a Bazooka Brothers lower:

Perhaps I'll get to try it out this weekend.

I've had another Oly .45 top on a CMMG lower that uses converted Uzi mags for a while:

I do like .45 carbines and both of the .45 ARs were preceded by less satisfying guns:

That's a Fox Wasp carbine on top, an archaic firearm that fires from an open bolt, and an HK USC, which is really a pretty nice gun, but not worth the premium paid.

The ARs are the ticket, I do believe, but it takes some effort to assemble one. You might find an arfcom thread useful: .45 ACP Conversion Guide.

To each his own. I'm not a fan of having a gun with all the size of a rifle and all the power of a handgun. I'd put some thought into it before dropping alot of cash on one.
