I am looking at the Cimarron Remington 1858 for .45LC and now the new US made 1858 by USFA pending the price. I have also been reading about the cartridge converters for my 4 Italian Remmies. I had a thought..why not simply make new cylinders and new hammers for my C&Bs and allow factory loads for .45LC? Looking forward to your opinions,Thanks

One of them converted Uberti's is high on my list right now. Going to opt for a shorter barrel and also one that shoots .38 specials as I am set up for reloading that round. got the fever bad, lol, now just got to find a way to scrape up some dough-ray-me.

If you take the time to slug your c&b revolver's barrel you may find that it's oversized for the usual .452 diameter .45 Colt bullet. The popular New Model Remington and Colt replica barrels can run up to around .460". The result isn't dangerous, but can have a negative effect on accuracy. A similar situation comes about in .36 C&B revolvers using .38 Long Colt or .38 Special cartridges. On the other hand replica revolvers that are made to duplicate conversions, and are sold originally as cartridge guns usually if not always have the correct bore to match the bullet.

I agree with Shawnee - if a Remington style cartridge revolver floats your boat, buy one of the model 1875 replicas. When it comes out I expect the USFA may well be the best of the lot, but probably at almost twice the price. However if you can afford one they may be worth the money.

These days money is worth less and less... :cuss:

Old Fluff do the newly manufactered conversion guns fire modern day cartridges with FMJ's or do they need lead bullets and cowby loads?

The manufacturers strongly recommend light loads and lead bullets, especially the open-top Colts. These kinds of revolvers were aimed at the cowboy action shooting market. If you're thinking of shooting jacketed bullets that usually come in +P loads, or have self defense in mind, there are far better choices. While the steel they use is better, these are still 19th century designs and technology.

While the c&b replica revolvers can be converted to metallic cartridge, the fact is that the revolver itself is only proofed to use black powder - and it says that on the side of the barrel for good reason.

Thanks for the opinions. I thought the after market people had good reasons not to simply make an alternative cylinder. I have no experience with the .45LC cartridge.I would like a gun I can shoot indoors without the great white puffy clouds scaring the sissies around me..ah,the smell of black powder in the morning!! I am awaiting the price of the USFA Remington..I wished they supplied counselors to explain to her why I just have to have another gun!!

Old Fluff. I had no intention of +p or self defense rounds out of a conversion revolver. I pretty much only load for plinking anyway and prefer to stretch the powder as far as it can go and still have lead end up on target.

The .38 special rounds and .357mags I already load are fairly powderpuff but I do use a jacketed bullet. I will start looking at lead bullets here the next time I go to purchase components for reloading.

The .38's and .357's I shoot now come out of a SP-101 and I only use store bought for defense rounds.

I do love replica revolvers and the conversion one is next on my list. I wish I had been born a cowboy, LOL.

Don`t feel bad about trying to explain to her why you just have to have the USFA Remmie ...I`ve been working on my wife for over a year now waiting to hear the price and KNOWING it`s going to be expencive . She knows I`m a Remmie type guy (nut)..heck I even bought her one with the shorter barrel ..she likes it too ...So when I read they would have one at the Shot Show in a few weeks ...I started paceing the floor like a dog in a small box ..finally she says ..you really want one that bad don`t you ??? Then she says , no problem you can buy at least one !! Gotta love her !

Nope one of a kind ....and she`s been with me 26 years now ..and she still likes me ..unbeleiveable.

I keep hearing people say that bp revolvers aren't adequate for self defense. Wonder what Wild Bill would think of that line of reasoning?

For myself, I ain't about to fill out a form 4473, because I strongly suspect that not long after Hillary's coronation, the BATF are going to come knocking on the doors of all the "unregistered" registered gun owners (form 4473 is a de facto gun registration form, whether you like it or not), and they'll very possibly come with SWAT teams.

I urge everyone to buy as many guns as they can while they still can, and unless you're already registered as a gun owner with the feds to make that black powder.

I`ll make sure I`m not at home when they come ..maybe they`ll come back 5 or 6 times before I hand over my slingshot and bb gun...lol

Gents....

I think if Ol' Wild Bill was to rejoin us today it wouldn't be long before he put his treasured pair of '51 Navies away and took up something more modern. Apparently he stuck to his cap & ball's because he didn't trust the reliability of early rim fire metallic cartridges. Since then cartridges and revolvers have come a long way.

This is not to say that the old-time guns aren't lethal. Of course they are. In fact during World War Two in one of the countries the Germans occupied, one individual - after having his modern firearms confiscated because the occupiers had the country's firearms registration lists - loaded a single-shot percussion pistol and went out to pick up a new Mauser rifle that the former owner didn't need anymore. In fact he didn't need anything anymore.

I don't know that the Democrats are going to win the election or not, it's way too early to predict. But the way the economy is going whoever gets in is going to have far more serious problems to worry about then guns. Also at this point there are so many older unregistered guns in this country that they couldn't get very far with total confiscation, and considering the number of folks that own guns it highly unlikely they'd win another election for a long, long time.

Last but not least, before the next election the Supreme Court may have found that the right to keep and bear arms is indeed an individual right, and any attempt at overall confiscation wouldn't get far.

That said, everyone should go out and buy guns, including the black powder kind. The more folks that buy guns the less likely the government will tangle with them, which is exactly what the founding fathers had in mind.

O F is right. Whoever wins the presidential election will have way bigger fish to fry than the gun ownership fillet.

I don't know about y'all but around here I do not know anyone who does not own at least one gun. I can't figure out how they would go door to door and confiscate them. Where do they start? I can't see a general gun ban on a federal level. Gun ownership is legal in TN because our state constitution says so. The Fed's might try an AWB like they previously had but an outright ban, I doubt it.

They try to take them around here and there is liable to be another civil war.

There is a big difference in gun laws from North to South ...Like Im283 says , could cause another war of the Civil kind .
We do so much buy sell and tradeing ...how would they ever know what we have . Buying hand guns is still done over the counter here in the south at Flea Markets and such ..even some gun shows . I`ve bought hand guns at both in the last year here in Mississippi . I am thinking I should have bought the SKS at the last flea market just because ..I do feel some day they will be banned . I don`t think I have a use for it ...but who knows . So if they ban guns like the SKS`s and such ...will they go door to door and collect them . If they do they won`t get the one I buy ...cash and carry ..no red tape .

I converted an original Ruger Old Army (the one with adjustable sights' that looks like a Blackhawk) to a cartridge cylinder. Been shooting low powered ammo, Got bored with it and am converting it back to ball 'n cap.

BP no good for self defense is an example of the theory of relativity in action.

I try the paper rolled bullet using 30 gr. fff and a 200 gr. buffallo bullet in .451 (my remmie is .454 tightfit). Same range as the balls. Brother was worried I had left a air gap between powder and bullet. loadeds them bullet downward and packed it tight to base before crimpiming the end.
