.308. Don't know how reliable it is. Any suggestions? Like a good dependable, high cap, assault rifle in .308 or equivalent for reasonable price.
Thanks.:neener:

As long as it scares liberals, it can't be that bad.

Sagias are good guns.

If it ain't select fire then it ain't an ''assault rifle''!!! Don't give the liberals more ammunition ;)

Saiga could serve you well yes. Pretty dependable too.

I would think tho if funds could run to it - a FAL or L1A1 - more money but a very good weapon. This was an MBR for quite some time - Brits started on L1A1 IIRC in 1957. 20 round capacity.

Bwhahah - croutons LOL :D

Well Chris, the guy who buillt that one did not quite camo it as I might have but hey - I can live with it. A member here ''Jaeger'' IIRC was the guy i bought it from.

Tell ya what tho - shoots like a dream and after I had fitted the B-Square mount (involving some file work) - and added the Leupold 1.5 - 5 - it has been spot on reliable, yep - holds zero good. I was more than pleased to give that gun a good home :)

The CAI L1A1 was a bit of a bear initially but - early feed problems were solved by some judicious Dremel work on chamber chamfer, plus using good milsurp ammo - it eats Port', SA and Aus' perfectly. Just redialled that in a week ago after a sights tweak - not bad at all :)

All reports indicate the Saiga is a solid, reliable platform at a very attractive price point. A friend of mine has a Saiga 20 gauge, which functions with boring reliability.

The only downside on the Saiga .308 is the proprietary mags, AFAIK capacities > 8 are not available.

Unless you pay a big tax and go through an extensive background check, you cannot legally own an "assault rifle" in the USA.

If you want a GOOD rifle...get a Garand:

I love my 16" saiga .308. It is quite handy and shoulders well. When scoped (with an improperly tightened mount I might add) it shoots a bit above 1" @ 100 yrds. Reliability is very, very boring. I have never had mine miss a beat. The mags are tough to find, but with the new importer getting ready to roll, that shouldn't be as big a problem (fingers crossed). The only mags you get are 8 rounders, too. If you need more rounds, you don't want a saiga .308. Get the FAL or something. If you really enjoy the kalashnikov action and can handle 8 rounds, then it's great. Aperture sights, larger capacity mags and more 'friendly' controls than some feel the AK has to offer are not gonna happen easily.

a friend of mine has the saiga and its a fun and accurate rifle to shoot.

aside from that i cant stand when people still refer to these types of rifles as "assault rifles" they are just SEMI-:D AUTOMATIC RIFLES.

Sold my Saiga...

...you can't get mags for it. It comes with one 8-round mag, and that one's plastic. There are NO mags available aftermarket. I saw THREE total 8-rounders for sale on ebay at $60 each. These lasted less than one day.
Get the PTR-91 if you want the best value in .308 available right now. $800 may seem like a lot, but it is one WONDERFUL rifle. I favor it over my M1a, which was my "if I have to have one rifle...". 20 round mags are $2, and everywhere. Steel ones are $4.
Get the PTR. You will never look back.

Here's a question:

Saiga 308 for $325 or Garand rechambered to 308 for $650? Both are limited to 8 rounds, both are semi-auto.

Which would you choose, and why?

I'd take the Garand. Better sights, better trigger, and clips are way cheaper than Saiga mags.

I used to have a .308 Vepr (very similar to the Saiga). I sold it, bought a .308 Garand, and have never regretted it.

Get the garand for sure. It makes a lot of sense to have it switched to .308 as suggested. The garand is just a rifleman's rifle in my humble eyes. I've spent time behind both and would prefer the garand for most activities. Not having to deal with mags is a big plus, and the large availability of aftermarket parts, etc. is a big selling point. Also faster reloads on the garand, and far better sights. The Garand is not necessarily more accurate, but it is more easy to be accurate with.

Get the Garand.

I traded a Saiga 16 inch 308 toward a PTR-91 and there is no looking back. Its a much better rifle. The Saiga trigger without modification sucks. It pulls up not back inorder to make the rifle style stock. Go for the PTR.

I remember hearing something about converted M1A/M14 magazines that would work with the Saiga. Perhaps someone here could fill us in?

M-14 mag conversions on the saiga had to be done by a gusmith. Krebs was doing them for a while, and now doesn't. I am not aware if there is anyone else left who will do it, but I know krebs won't. If you're an adept machinist, I think it might be something you can handle at a shop of your own. The difficulty is that it requires cutting into the front trunion, which is a spot you don't want to go hacking into unless you're pretty sure of what you're up to.

Someone else over at the saiga-12 forums did develop an aluminum adaptor piece that still required altering the receiver (but not the front trunion) but would let you use G3 mags. I don't know about it's weight, reliability, etc., but I sure remember thinking it was bulky and ugly.

My personal feelings are that getting the saiga to do something it wasn't designed to is pretty difficult and potentially damaging to the rifle. I just decided to accept what it was and get something else to fill an 'mbr' role if needed.

If assault weapons are select fire explain the AWB on semi's?

I once read a selection on the ATF website stating any weapon which can hold more than ten rounds, pistol grips, flash hider, and maybe bayonet is labeled Assault. Doesn't matter now, but after "9/11" I consider my AK a homeland defense weapon... lets see them ban that!:D
