This happened several weeks ago, and I have posted on a local site here and got some feed back lets see what happens here.

I had posted some jeep parts on craigslist, as time went by had a fella call me and we chatted a bit, he was planning on coming over in a day or so to pick up, so consequently all following calls I asked them to check in later in the week to see if this fella came thru, well his chance came and went, I called him on several occasions to give him a second chance, no answer or a call back.
Well I sold the unit a week and a half later to another fella.
So come sunday morning early, the door bell rings, dogs are a little crazy, so I grab up a pistola and make my way to the front door.
Fella says " Hey i'm Chad, the guy buying the axles,.
I tell'm " sorry man left you several messages the last few days telling you I sold them, you never bothered to return any of my calls.
He gets all puffed up, as he does I swing my security screen door open almost hitting him as he steps back, and I am still standing sideways my right hand packing a micro .45, still hidden.
He gets all ****ty starts ranting and ****, then say" maybe I oughta leave you something to remember a deals a deal" lifts his shirt and shows me a cheap pistola, I being a pretty good size fella take two big steps as I bring my weapon up in his face and pull his jennys nine out of his pants and start backing him up, about that time my future son in law comes rolling out the door racking my mossy kept in the hall closet.
The fella just about ****s himself, I back him down the drive to his truck, ( a beautiful 71 chevy four wheeler) all the while advising him not to come back, he gets in the truck and tries to start it, he floods it, and then is almost in tears, I'm pretty pumped up and am talking loud, the fella across the street comes out with a baseball bat asking me if I need help, the guy tries to start it again and it finally catches and he hauls ass.
I get the make, model, color and lic. number and spend the next few minutes talking with the neighbor and then head to the house, and then the explanation to the old lady, who is smiling, and saying, damm he doesn't know how lucky he is does he. ( she;s referring to the part where as a younger man, I woulda beat his sorry ass till some one pulled me off him, but I've mellowed out some, besides at my age it hurts to get hit (63).
Ok then, I took the nine and cut it up on my band saw and called the cops after a few fellas on the local site advised me to do so.
Local cops showed up, and one of them was damm near rolling as my neighbor described the guy almost crying and trying to start his truck.
The other was extremely serious, especially on me having a weapon on him etc, well they ran his plates and found he had several warrants out on him. Then I handed the one cop the cut up nine, he choked on his bottle of water I'd given him as he took it out of the bag and laid it on the hood of their cruiser and kinda put it together.
It wasn't hot.
As of now no problems, I did make a couple friends (cops) they stop by when in the neighbor hood and check out my jeep (rock crawler) and a few of the bang sticks.
I'm just glad I didn't shoot him, or beat him, woulda ended up a whole lot different.

What would you have done??

In a situation that escalated as fast as it sounds like this one did, I think you did OK. I know some would say shoot him the minute he shows you the gun, but you probably saved yourself a lot of lawyer money by showing the restraint that you did.

All around, no shots fired and jacka** gets what's coming to him from the law.

the fella across the street comes out with a baseball bat asking me if I need help

You've got some good neighbors :p

Although, I think that had he drawn that gun (and especially pointed it at me) on my property, I probably would have fired given how crazy he seemed anyways.

Sheesh. I feel much better about Craigslist deals these days after getting my CCW. Seems like I hear about funky stuff going down on a fairly regular basis. Not that I can imagine life without Craigslist -- I love it!

What would you have done??
:scrutiny:

Well, for starters what I wouldn't have done is "swing my security screen door open almost hitting him" after he got "all puffed up".

I would have just stayed in the house and said "Sorry, stuff's sold", then closed the door.

Feeling the need to pop out on the porch so I can show him that "my thing is bigger than his thing" doesn't cut it for me.

But when I feel like it, I can really be bad as all hell sitting behind a keyboard on the Internet.

Done Darn Good.

Hey there:
Been close to that a few times myself. They have not been back and I'm pretty sure they won't be anytime soon.

You did the right thing. BUT,,,,,, I still don't like Craigs list or E-Bay.

My ONLY critique is that I'm not sure I'd have chopped the gun. You want to be able to prove later that the thing could have fired, to max out the charges on this moron.

That's why anytime I use Craigs list or other such service I have the meeting somewhere else. It may seem sketchy to meet someone in a Wal-Mart parking lot but it is a public place, and unless they follow you, they don't know where you live, how nice your house is, or if you have anything valuable that is easily accessible. You never know who you are meeting over the internet and it just makes more sense to me not to invite strangers to my house.

I agree with Zeke here.
Letting people you don't know come to your house is always a bad idea. However, I think you did the right thing. Maybe if he already had some warrants on him and was carrying he wasn't planning on paying for the stuff anyway.

You cut up his gun?:what:

1. It wasn't yours. Suppose he tells a different story to the judge and you have to buy him a new gun.

2. Anti's cut up guns. Don't be an anti.

3. Even a Jennings nine is worth $10. Okay, maybe not.:D

Well now.

Hey :
He could have just put the gun where the sun don't shine. Maybe the guy would have set it of trying to get it out.
Was that jennings really worth $10.00 ?

Thats crazy scary, glad you are alright. I would love to see the look on this dudes face. What a jack-@$$

In hindsight, what was your reason for cutting up the gun? He was gone, the threat was gone. Was the gun still a threat to you?

Perhaps you were still hard wired after such an emotional, life threatening situation. It was mentioned that in your earlier years you would beat his butt good, perhaps beating up his gun was the next best thing eh?

Take care of yourself, he knows where you live.

+1

I wouldn't escalate the situation.

He might be back with his homies when you least expect it, so you should be watching your back.

I chopped it up because I thought it might be hot, given the moment, I thought of several things I might have done different but it was way after I had time to ponder on it. I'm happy with the outcome, not so sure i'd been so happy spending my $$ to defend myself for having shot him, sure was tempting though, even thought about smacking him with the barrel a few times, but I hate cleaning blood off of blued things.ha
hey thanks for the comments, and hopefully it is a thing in the past.
But one thing is for sure, couldn't loaded the Dana 44 axles into the truck to take them else where, besides I have great neighbors and a couple of junkyard dogs on my acre,
later.

Chopped it up because you thought it might be hot?

Seems to me like the rightful owner of the gun might not have appreciated that too much...

<Police> Mr. theft victim, we found your stolen gun.

<Mr. theft victim> Really! When can I come pick it up?

<Police> Ummm, there uh...is a small complication......

<Mr. theft victim> Like What?

<Police> Well, you see, the uh...guy who recovered your gun from the criminal .... thought you might prefer it in the much safer form of a jigsaw puzzle.

<Mr. theft victim> *GROAN*

I'm not comprehending that part at all.

I would not have been that aggressive; I would have stayed my butt in the house.

But hey, all's well that ends well, eh?

The only victim here is that old Jennings. :neener:

Premium sauces, heres the best i can come up with.
Pretty sure it surprised him, it sure as hell surprised me when I did it, just reflexes I guess, I don't think he expected me to move quite so fast, probably thought he scared me, well he succeeded, scared me into reacting the best the grey matter allowed for the moment. ITs easy to come up with shoulda, coulda, woulda, thats why I posted the situation and the reaction and the question of what would you do, or does know till it happens??
Hey thanks for all the pro's and con's, but I can say I'm happy with the results, and as for maybe he might return, I own a business in the construction industry and well gotta say, if I had a buck for every threat or person that showed up at my office or home after loosing their job and wanting to blame me or one of the supervisors for their own stupidity, I dont' get excited over it. Its just the way it is.
thanks for the comments again to all,
rj

That's great, and not so great. Glad it worked out ok, but not glad you had to go through the ordeal.

I would be all worried about him wanting revenge. I wouldn't have cut up the gun. But it would have been more funny if you could have made him watch you do it hehe.

That being said, I have a couple of questions.

1. How on earth did you yank the pistol out of his pants. If you could give an exact placement of hands, yours and his and motion. I am really curious about this.

2. What was the pistol loaded with? What type of ammo if you can identify it. I'm always curious to know what the thugs are using for ammo these days.

He had both hands lifting his shirt and was pretty confident he had a rube, I'd already opened the door, think it rattled him a bit, with only two steps between us, is was an easy grab, almost dropped it as he was sweating a lot, or was it me, Ha. It had 115 grain 9mm, nothing special> not sure I'd do it again, but one never knows till it happens. He's presently in jail so I now too concerned. Hope it comes down to nothing on both sides.
