Sounds like you were asking for trouble.

I mean that in the friendliest possible way, but that's too much excitement for me.

Aside from not answering the door at all what else should have been done or not done?
The door bell rings, and I looked out to see a young hispanic male, shaved head, wearing all black. I cracked the door open and he said his car had broke down a couple of blocks and needed to use my phone.
1) You never, ever, open your door to a stranger, even if it’s just a crack. For all you know the All Blacks are standing right next to it outside and will knock it down as soon as they see that door move an inch.
If the guy kicked that door as soon as you cracked it opened you’d be 100% exposed or sitting on your butt on the floor.

I told him to standby and went and got the portable phone and my Kel Tec, racked the slide and returned to the door.

2) Since you said it was late at night, you should have picked that gun immediately when the door bell rings, along with a flashlight. By the way, that gun should already be loaded, not racking teh slide in teh last desperate second.

You should have gabbed your gun, and then talk through the door, intercom, or if you don’t have one, talk from a window, even if you have to shout a bit.
A window from a higher first floor would be perfect, that’s what I generally do.
Again, never open your door to a complete stranger.
I would advise getting a couple of solid door latches if you insist on opening the door partially to talk to strangers on your doorstep.

HSO, those things fall appart with a kick, and you dont have to kick too hard at that. Over here, people no longer use those. They just dont work.
