Is fanning a SA revolver real?

Hidalgo is one of my favorite westerns of recent vintage. But every scene where the hero fan-fires his revolver in shoot-outs or chase scenes is cringe-worthy. The fact that the director shows him reloading an SAA on the run is amazing, but then the hero reverts back to the Hollywood cliche of fan-firing the revolver.

20th century Vaudeville acts, side shows, wild west shows, and Hollywood movies built a mythology around the gunslinger that is highly inaccurate. The intervening years between the 1870's and today produced propaganda that have mangled our sense of the westward migration and settlement of the frontier. But its good entertainment, so don't let the facts ruin the telling of a good story.
