Sometimes I have to drive from Albany Georgia to Columbus Georgia. The highway goes through Fort Benning near Columbus. It is highway 27, 520, 280. I noticed a sign that says this part of the highway is patrolled by military police. Is it legal to carry a gun on this part of the highway if you have a Georgia firearms license? I know it is illegal to carry a gun on a military base for most people. There is no gate or checkpoint on this part of the highway.

You really need to contact the Fort Benning Provost Marshall's Office to answer your question. Most likely it is illegal for you to carry a gun on that portion of the installation.

I have never carried a gun through this area so far. I was just curious to know if it is okay. It seems like it would be legal if you drive through without stopping. It's only about a 15 mile stretch of highway that goes through fort Benning. Maybe it falls under federal jurisdiction and not Georgia law. It looks like it would be a very long detour to avoid driving through this area.

What do you wish to do?

Do you mean carry a 50 cal BMG on the roof?

Or carry a little pistol in your pocket?

My understanding is that the post doesn't execute jurisdiction on the highway even though it passes through them, IE you will pulled over by the highway patrol and not the MP's, if you wish to enter a cantonment area, then no.

Do you pass any sign that prohibits firearms as required to be posted by 18 USC 930? No sign=no prosecution. You are good to go.

Should be the same as Ft. Stewart back in the 80's when I was there. As NavyLT
said..No Sign = No Restriction, just follow State law.

I think this situation varies with the individual base commander. Last December I had to go onto the base and was told that I couldn't bring my guns on post. This policy was posted on the visitor center and on their website.

Now contrast that with my trip there this past May to see the Best Ranger competition. There were no signs posted and nobody asked me a thing about my guns and the only difference was a new base commander.

The Ft Benning MPs can and do patrol the freeway passing through the military reservation.

I've been told that as long as you go straight through without stopping, you should be good to go. In order to be 100% "Ft Benning-legal", the weapon would need to be unloaded and cased seperately from the ammunition.

I live 2 miles from Ft Benning and can't recall hearing any stories of anyone driving on the freeway being harrassed about weapons in the vehicle. However, if you need to stop for ANY reason (i.e. a vehicle breakdown) you would be well advised not to be carrying just in case the MP's stop by to assist. Ft Benning regulations prohibit ANYONE that is not on-duty law enforcement from carrying on the installation.

RangerHAAF, most installations have a very similar policy. I can't think of a single base I've ever been stationed on that allows weapons on board without CO approval

I am linking the current Ft Benning policy as of 13 October 09.

There are, if I recall correctly, signs that you are entering a Military Reservation from both directions when entering that stretch of road. Firearms CAN be transported in an approved fashion on Ft Benning. Ft Benning does NOT recognize any State's carry permits validity on Federal property.

Just drive on through, if you have to stop, don't get caught carrying, and you should be just fine.

Thanks for all of the info. I think I'll just not risk it and not carry on this part of the highway. It's a shame that we have to live in fear from our corrupt government. These stupid regulations didn't stop that scumbag muslim from going on a shooting massacre today.
