Is Ruger SR9 really an IMPROVED Glock?

The SR9s I have handled seems to be quality pieces.

That being said, I haven't purchased one. I do have several GLOCKs.

Nothing wrong with a Ruger; I am actively seeking a clean P90, and have no apologies for it.

glock ruger xd etc...

god people, think about what you are saying, ALL these brands will KILL, probably always when neccessary. Some people have noted many problems with Glock, many problems with SR9, problems with XD's,the list goes on. I have owned Glocks, XD's, SR9's, FN Herstal, Taurus, you name it. The only one I found cheap feeling and inaccurate was the FNP-9, that was like a plastic toy. I have to say, my SR9 and SR9C have seen about 10,000 rounds with NO problems. I am sure that others have the same experience with ALL the brands I listed. There is really no one best brand, except the one that goes bang every time you pull the trigger, and that would probably be a REVOLVER. There is not an auto loader that does not fail at some point, yes even Sig and Glock and ALL others, so if you want an almost completely reliable gun, buy a revolver. See the following remarks about Glocks... http://www.thehighroad.us/archive/index.php/t-263012.html

No comparison---the Glock hands down.

I HAD a SR9--within 100 rounds the barrel peened so bad that it would hold the slide back---Ruger fixed it on their dime and I sold it as soon as it came back.

Bring up this topic in 5 years and we'll see----as of now--the Ruger has a long long way to go.

And I'm generally a Ruger fan and gave the SR9 a fair shake.

You always have your diehards, especially in the Glock vs 1911.

But look at Ruger, they take for ever to introduce a gun, and with rare exception they make excellent guns. Lets not forget that the G22 has blown up.

The P series is a good gun, they are issued in Iraq and Afghanistan (P95)

Rugers biggest problem is they dont advertise very well or market themselves. And if they double the price everyone would say they are the greatest guns.

Then they dont produce enough vaiations like other companies. Glock makes three sizes of each caliber.

How many models of the 1911 does Kimber make?

As far what is better, Glock vs SR9, they are both excellent guns in different ways. Some people dont want the thumb safty. Some dont like the 1911 feel of the SR9.

And as far as a gun winning major competitions, if you are factory sponsored, you shoot what they want you to push. If Rob Latham won with a High Point, would you sell your Glock for one?

Yes! Ruger Out-GLOCKed GLOCK with the SR-9....

.... in the ugly department.

But at the same time, Glock really only does pistols. Ruger probably wouldn't greatly benefit from going the full-size, compact, and sub-compact route in . Their portfolio is probably diverse enough for their liking.

Let me first say, I'm biased since I'm a lefty. The Glocks, though very accurate, and I do like the trigger btw, just dont fit my hand well. The Ruger SR9 had a horrible trigger (heavy, gritty) but maybe that's fixed now as was stated in a previous post. I did like the way it fit my hand, better than a Glock for me. I would not buy any new production model, from any company until the bugs have been worked out...So no SR9, though I truly am a Ruger fan. The gun that gets my vote is Ruger's cousin the P95 9mm, it fits my hand well, has the ambi controls I need as a lefty and is durable and reliable to boot.

Google glock gen 4 problems, and Glock 22 blow up

I have both the SR9 and the Glock 17 (3rd edition). Only way I'm getting rid of either one is to have them pried from my dead fingers. That being said, if I could only have one, it would be my Glock. Some reasons; I like the feel of the handle better, it's easier to completely take apart, much more aftermarket options available, I like the looks better. It just comes down to personal preference, no wrong answers. Both have been trouble free for me and I shoot them a lot. I shoot nothing but my own reloads in both. FMJ or plated. Tried lead, didn't like the puff of smoke at each shot, too dirty and gun (SR9) didn't like them at all (never shot lead through the Glock). I'll reload lead in my revolvers with no problems but not my automatics.

I’ve read that .40 caliber Glocks have been said to have some barrel casing full-support issues but all their other calibers seem to get fine reviews from what I’ve seen. Correct me if you have seen other reports on this? I did read that there were some issues with some of their new Gen 4's. Also because they are using polygonal rifling on their barrels they recommend you don’t use lead or hard cast bullets. If you are then a Lone Wolf or KKM replacement barrel will cure that.

Some guns are fully supported and some aren't. It's true that second gen Glock .40 barrels are egregious offenders. But the 3rd gen support is pretty similar to other popular guns, such as the Beretta 96 and Walther P99. I don't think full chamber support should be of any concern unless you are wanting to make hot handloads.

Polygonal rifling is a plus, as far as consistency in manufacture and velocity. The only downside is that lead or cast bullets will create more fouling in a polygonal barrel.

"IMO there are two polymer pistols that have improved on the Glock. There are some that have reached the same level as the Glock, and numerous ones that have fallen below Glocks standard.

The Walther P99 and S&W M&P are improvements over the Glock.
The XD and USP are about on the same level as a Glock.
The SR9 hasn't reached the standard set by Glock. It may in the future, but it hasn't yet. "

I couldn't agree more. The Gen 4 Glock is trying to reach the level of the Walther P99 and S&W M&P by improving things like ergonomics and grip customization, but it's not there yet. It will likely never reach the quality of the Walther's trigger (in P99 AS form).

That said, the Ruger SR9 is, in my experience, a great gun. And it should cost much less than the list price (my brother recently purchased one brand new for $410). Ergonomics are much better than Glock, the sights are better (in my opinion), and it's a much nicer-looking gun in terms of fit-and-finish. For a home-defence and target shooting pistol - yeah, I would say it's a great choice -especially for $150 less than a Glock. For a service gun, it just needs more time to be proven, and I know the manual safety is a deal-breaker for some folks.
