Is the market slowly recovering?

A lot of folks have come around to understanding buying a little extra here and there when prices are good to build up a buffer against possible down times is a good thing. We all have our idea of what is too much, etc. People panicking and wanting to buy 20K primers now hurts the supply chain, the folks who bought 20K in time of plenty and sales did not.
I’ll gladly trade a case or two of Quilted Northern for a couple of bricks of SPP.

Remington has not been much of a player in the reloading market for a while, regardless of trends in demand

As a whole some agreement however, REM 7-1/2 users would probably beg to differ a bit. They are mine and LOTS of others go to SRP. I

But yes, they've reduced their exposure over the years with reloading components.

Yeah and now that vista owns them and has discontinued the Remington named primers maybe they’ll increase production of CCI or Federal. Or, am I dreaming again?
I did not know any of the remmington name was gone. If you have an article I'd love to read it.

Maybe, but there’s a bad moon on the rise. It won’t take much to eviscerate the hobby/sport/recreation side of firearms without approaching anything that will interfere with the 2A. Ergo, when the sales come (if they come), they’ll be going out of business sales.
Yes, with wild market swings bad things can happen when it screeches to a halt, just like last time, but overall, the market will remain, players just might change a little.

It’s not illegal to mail toilet paper. Can’t say the same for primers. As it says in another thread you can’t even trade your own cast lead bullets without a FFL and International permit. Maybe you or me or some fella down the block can get away with it once or twice. Is it worth the risk of 3am no-knock warrant?
You know what’s really different this time? A bunch of folks are in denial. And they won’t tolerate anybody busting their bubble. The market isn’t catching up. It’s clearing out.

That’s my point. Leaving whether they’re your favorite or not aside, how often have you seen a reliable supply of Remington primers in any retail outlet? Years? Regardless, if you wanted them you had to hunt for them

I bought a brick of 7 1/2’s a couple of years ago as a novelty because it was the first time I’d ever seen them in stock

I'm not a fan of many things that say Remington on them, 7 1/2 primers are one of the products I really like.

The Remington 7 1/2 is a very popular primer.

When I started loading 454 casull I made a brief attempt to follow freedom arms load data, because who knows better than them? Well 7 1/2 primers were never common in my area and I used any small rifle mag primer I could find and it worked fine but for some reason that I don't fully understand (possibly mental) I get best groups using the Remington primers, plus they're in a tidy little box and 1000 take up very little space. I wasn't happy to hear they may mot be made anymore. I'm down to 600 but I've got another 1000 coming my way Saturday in trade for spp (a good deal in my opinion) .
Let's see what 2021 brings, hopefully plenty of good components.

Many of us got an email last week from midway I think it was.

I never thought about it in my short time doing this, but this past July I bought my first Remington LPP for no reason other than that’s what cabelas had on their site.
Thinking back, these are the only ones I’ve ever “seen.”

Many of us got an email last week from midway I think it was saying primers discontinued. Vista now owns Remington brand except firearms
I was aware of the takeover and could only immagine there will be restructuring. I just hopped the primer section of the plant was brought up to full capacity first. Not realistic but we can hope...

This time it seems different than all the others to me as well. This time the oddball ammo and that for shotguns has dissapeared completely as well. Last few times there was a bunch of hunting ammo in rifle calibers and some 12 GA promo stuff left on the sheves, not this time. I think everyone is getting it that we may be in for many further restrictions to curtail the 2A and ponying up the cash to build a stash.

Indeed. I don't know who owns a 375 H&H here in El Paso, TX, but they went to Academy and bought some ammo for it.

All the ammo shelves at my local gun shop are bare, how can it be recovering??
I did go through my stockpile of ammo cans & find I have a lot more .380 ammo than I thought I did. LOL
And I only have one .380 pistol now.

I rarely see Remington primers around here, also. The same goes for Federal primers. Even when Remingtons were on the shelf, they were usually about $5 more than CCI. After using a couple bricks of their SPP, I found out about the warning of using them in high pressure cartridges. After that, I would have to be desperate to buy more.
I did find a brick of LPPs back in 2013, price marked $42.99.

I start worrying when the moms and pops run out of $30/50 boxes of .32S&W Long Match Target LWC. That’s when folks are desperate.

While working at the public outdoor shooting range I have to say that until a few weeks ago I never really heard people comment about running out of ammo. Had heard many comment about prices but not availability. Back about Oct. we were struggling to keep ammo on our shelves for our own customers and had instituted a policy that we would sell ammo to customers but you also had to buy a range pass. That was also because that the prices we were charging we were not making any profit from it. Yet people kept on shooting.

A week ago Saturday I had two young guy show up with 5.56 AR Pistols and 2 cans of ammo. They shot up those two cans in about an hour and a half and then left like it was an everyday occurrence. At the same time I've had guys show up at the 300yd range take their 10 shots and call it quits.

In reality there have been some real life changes in the gun market these past 3 years, one being just the mass numbers of new first time owners. People who we would have thought would never own a firearm. The the sale of Cabela's, now the sale of Western Powders, the bankruptcy of a number gun related companies, the others that just retired or quit the business, The virus and world wide pandemic,

I have been told that Canada is one of the worlds largest suppliers of gun primers and they are shut down. Not exporting anything due to the virus, Then we also lost the primers that were coming in from the old Soviet bloc countries so that shrunk the market even more.

So I am happy that I have found what I will need for the immediate future and if my opportunities to shoot next year mirror last year I may have enough to last me the year. As I've stated many times, I have spent many hours at the range this year but it was mostly spent watching other shoot!

Where I shop the selection the market is getting worse for reloading components, ammo, equipment, and firearms. And until the covid gets under control in Europe I expect that situation to continue.

I bought thousands of Remington primers this summer & fall from Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's. I'm confident I'm far from alone in having done so. The last Remington primes I purchased were 9.5 Large Rifle Primers on October 17, 2020. I bought my first Remington 9.5 Large Rifle primers from on-shelf availability at Bass Pro Shops in July 2020. If you haven't seen them in years, you haven't been looking very hard. I have plenty of Remington 1.5, 2.5, and 5.5 primers I bought between July and October this year as well. There was zero "hunting" required in my experience vs any other domestic brand and I'm confident that I'm not the only person with such first hand experience

Your post below is not congruent at all with reported facts plus my own experience.

Remington has not been much of a player in the reloading market for a while, regardless of trends in demand

And this post has zero facts regarding "all reports" clearly demonstrated but ignored.

Because it isn’t.

Did a factory burn down? Have there been any external forces limiting manufacturing capacity or distribution? Hurricanes, floods, acts of God or government?

No.

By all accounts, manufacturing output is at an all time high. That’s the supply side.

You want to know what the problem is? Look in the mirror

Those are my points, all demonstraby factual. You want facts? Don't look in the mirror.

I have no experience with Remington primers though I very soon will as I now have 1100 7 1/2 Small Rifle primers to use for my 223. All the local sales I find are either CCI or Winchester, I can't remember seeing anyone locally with Federal primers on their shelves or maybe it was that I just wasn't looking. Will repeat, my contention is that I will be hard pressed to purchase any components on-line that require a Hazmat fee. Use to be that I could run to BPS/Cabela's or a couple other shops an pick up a pound of powder or a brick of primers as needed.

I found remmington was all that was left when I went because the extra dollar fifty was to much for the crowd here in Memphis. My first choice is usually cci not because they are cheaper 2.99 compared to 4.59, but it's what my dad used the most and that's about as good of reason as any. I got the last 700 spp they had on the shelf months ago and there have been none of any flavor since. I gifted my buddy 200 for Christmas so I'm not exactly hoarding

From a blog post made by Powder Valley Inc...

"Remington primer production capacity has never been great. The hope would be that Vista will place more emphasis on getting the Remington primer production capacity increased substantially and quickly."
