so is the 1855 system good with little issues?
The biggest issue would likely be the side-spitting they'll do sometimes out of the cylinder/barrel gap. If you hold the rifle like you'd hold a normal one, your forearm is going to be perilously close to said gap and likely to be peppered with lead shavings or powder grains upon firing. I believe the fellows who used similar guns originally wore a thick leather gauntlet over their forearm to prevent such injury as the gap could inflict. Would probably be wise to do the same with a reproduction...or keep the support hand well back of the gap.
 
Berkley - you are correct about the barrel on the originals - I have never seen a long one but I'm sure Samuel would have sold one if someone ordered it!!!
 
Ephraim, I would be very interested to see an example or other documentation of an original Third Model Dragoon with an 18" barrel. Here is the real deal- close !

BTW, I had this ASM for several years. It had the barrel address and serial numbers of an original, but the shoulder stock was a dead giveaway.
