It's time once again--Revolvers are cooler than autos because. . .

Boats!!! You should be ashamed! :p

I ''teethed'' on revo's 40 or so years ago - they always have a special place. But - I'd not administer ''coolness'' quotients to them necessarily any more than some auto's.

My ''coolest'' revo's would be Smiths mainly - N frames at that. I do tho much admire the best of the 1911's, I love my SIG (yeah, I find it pretty cool!).

But in the end I really wouldn't give either corner the ''coolness'' prize - just way too many fine guns out there. As a caveat tho - maybe the cool factor with revo's is the shere engineering and tradition ... if clean then reliable and always go bang - just not as many times as many auto's! ;)

Got to agree with P95. I love both guns, though when it comes down to the true nut cuttin, I will more than likely have a revolver in my hands instead of one of my auto's. I think the coolness factor has to go to the semi-auto's while the dependable, historical, magical, always go bang factor goes to the revolver.

Edited to add:

My Hi-Powers are having a hard time accepting this, they're pissed! :p

Revolvers are cooler than autos because.
Anyone who understands this doesn't need the explanation.

Anyone who needs the explanation will never understand.

PJR :D heh
My fellow shooting buds are all "large caliber auto" and I am continually asked why I like wheelguns along with some pretty negative remarks for the revolvers in general, and "why don't you try one of these" referring to a Glock or Sig. I've never slammed any of their preferences for autos-guns are ALL "COOL" in my book. I just have way too much admiration for revolvers. Maybe someday I'll try a larger caliber auto, but there are several more S&W's on my wish list for the future!

you can do either of these

and even this

When I'm not in a hurry, just taking my time, nothing's cooler than just dropping 1 round at a time into a revolver cylinder. And, I second the opinions "they just are", and "if they haven't got it by now, they probably never will".

Revolvers are cooler than autos because. . .

... you don't need to sweep-up brass.
... you get "bang" without "tap-rack".
... they look cooler in leather holsters.
... getting extra semi-auto magazines can be expensive!
... Bill Jordan used one.
... Magnums rule!

I was thinking about this just today.

It seems to me that the main reason for the autoloader exsistance is capacity and quick reloads. And in that it excels. But I think if what you are intereted in is Shooting (as opposed to reloading) than I think it's hard to argue against a revolver. Consider the following advantages:

Considerably faster to reload (what did he say?) Well, I don't know about you but my ammo comes in a box and not in a magazine. Box to target the revolver is faster.

Self contained. No magazine that comes away from the gun.

Can operate with a wide variety of ammunition (both bullet shape and charge power) without modification (no recoil springs or feed ramps)

Can be operated with empty chambers (great practice for getting rid of the flinch). And yeah you can do it with an auto and snap caps, but you have to rack the slide on the caps.

No manual saftey. Don't worry about it!

If you're a re-loader (and why aren't you?) the revolver looks even better:

Your brass goes right where you want it.

Your brass isn't crushed

Revolvers are more forgiving when it comes to crimp and OAL

Maybe revolvers, as a group, enjoy better reliabilty than autos as a group but I think that's just because there are more poor auto designs out there than poor revolver designs

I also can't really say anything about accuracy as you can find great and poor examples in both designs.

The only "Shootablity" advantage I can think of for the revolver is the ability to have a single action trigger pull every time without manually operating a hammer, which might be important to somebody.

Ok, I'm really more of a plastic autopistol sort, but I think I can still play.

Revolvers are cooler than autos because:

...the bad guy can see the hollowpoints gaping at him while they wait their turn.

...there's no plastic. (Even I can see the coolness factor of pure steel.)

Revolvers are better because;
1. They are more reliable
2. They are less likely to let you down
3. They are more likely to work when you need them.
4. The chances of misfeeding are nonexistant.
5. They don't stove pipe.
6. Hollow points are NEVER a problem.
7. They never throw hot brass in your face
8. They never throw hot brass down your shirt.
9. They never throw hot brass into the next lane.
10. They never throw hot brass...

Of course I do like my Sig because;
1. It's more comfortable to carry
2. It's the most reliable "second best" handgun I own.

Because of the look on the face of the combat tupperware high speed low drag operator on the next lane when you outshoot him with an ivory gripped 3rd Model Hand Ejector.

Because of the look on the face of the combat tupperware high speed low drag operator on the next lane when you outshoot him with an ivory gripped 3rd Model Hand Ejector.

Or the mixed look of fear and disgust from that same combat tupperware operator in the next lane when you unleash 6 double action, rapid fire rounds down range at the steel plate rack with full house .44 Magnums, and you hit every one....while he needed 15 rounds to knock down the same amount of plates.
If I got a dime for every time one of those half plastic bottom feed guys asked me....."what the hell are you shooting"....and I always answer...."It's called a revolver".......I'd be able to afford a new Dillon 550 with plenty of extras..... :D

Because you;
1. Don't get a FTF :banghead: FTF :banghead:
2. Don't get ticked off about a bad ejector :(
3. Don't have to worry if the gun will feed the ammo :barf:
4. Don't have to think how to make Plastic cool
5. Don't get into stupid arguments about 9mm vs 45 ACP
AND
6. Don't have to watch westerns with Gangsta Style pistol holds :neener:

Because they have yet to make an auto that looks as cooooool as this! :D

Cooler because..

When you're sitting around the ol' campfire, and the coals are burning low, a six-gun just feels "right".

Wrapping a cartridge belt around a single action revolver in a holster, just looks "right".

A revolver looks "right" on horseback.

When you hear the words "Boots, Stetson, (Do you ever insert the word "Glock" here?)

Aw well as long as it has a little horse engraved on it I'm happy.

But yeah, a revolver feels right on horseback. Especially if it's a New Service Colt with a lanyard.

automatic revolver, maybe?

I own both, and I enjoy shooting both. However, if I could only have one pistol (.22s excepted), I would go with a .357 mag revolver with a 4-inch barrel. Basically, it boils down to ruggedness and caliber. Less to go wrong on a revolver, and the .357 is, in my opinion, a perfect balance between power and "shootability". I know alot of you, given only one choice, would scoff at my choice and suggest a .44, and certainly that round is a winner, but for general purposes, its just too much, whereas I can shoot .357's and .38's all day long. In fact, I carry a .357 as my main gun, so that should tell you where I stand pretty clearly. However, when it comes to my all-time favorite caliber, .22, I actually have no preference. Currently I shoot a MkII and a H&R Sportsman, and I enjoy both a great deal. If I absolutly had to choose, I would probably go with the MkII only because I have shot one since I was a kid, but the reality of the situation is that I don't have to choose, and so I shoot and enjoy both equally.

Timbo

BTW, I know about the Metaba, and its automatic-revolverness, so please, don't beat me up about it!!!
