Great choice KY Rifleman

The first handgun I ever fired was my hunting buddies 4" security six, way back in 1988. I was impressed, and a couple years later I got myself a SP-101 that I kept for several years. I have recently come back to revolvers. I was happy to find this Ruger Speed Six last month at the local shop, consigned by one of the employees. It's an early one from about '72, in 38 special. Sorry for a bit of glare in the photos. You can see my other 38 specials with it, a S&W 337 and 442. Very happy with all 3!

Here is mine I bought a long, long time ago. Pre-warning, stainless with added Herrett stocks. Many years ago I did not care for the really sharp checkering on the Herrett's so I sanded them down and refinished them. Work perfectly now. That Security Six has been on my or my wife's hip over many a mile in myriad places.

Hard to beat a good Security Six.

Hey, that is a beautiful old frame Speed-Six! Congrats! You are very lucky to have found one that nice! It took me 16 years until I was fortunate enough to have landed a few NIB old frame Speed-Sixes! I love the old frames! But, I also love the new frames too! They are all great revolvers! My first choice in fact!

Bought a blued SS back in 1973 when in AK. Used it mostly for ptarmigan when snow shoeing, it was accurate enough to take close up head shots when they peeked out of their snow bank burrows. But did use it to dispatch a couple moose hit by vehicles.

Wife later took a liking to it and confiscated, daughter up in WY now has it and it is still her favorite handgun.

That 2 3/4 inch Stainless Security Six is just like mine, but I had a smith make it a round butt and put Secret Service wood stocks on it.

It's my favortie short .357 (and I have a 2 1/2 M66 and 3 inch M686!)

Confederate, I'll try contacting Millett by phone. I love the short gun, but then I have a weakness for snub-nosed revolvers. Thanks for the pics!

The Millett sights do look much easier see than the factory sights.

Deaf Smith and Leanwolf, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has put some work and effort into the SS. The action in mine is incredibly smooth, and the trigger surprisingly light. I don't think anyone has done an action job on it; I just believe that the pistol has been well shot-in.

I bought mine with every intention of mounting a scope to it, but I like the SS so much that I'm now looking for a second 6" to scope, so I can keep one with factory sights.

If I can pull a good deal on a second pistol, I'll have 2 Rugers for the price of one new S&W. I won't say that the Ruger is a better gun than the Smith, but I'll say it's every bit as good, especially in accuracy.

Even with the ground-down sights mine came with, It was holding 3" groups at 30 yards. I can't do any better than that with either of my S&Ws.

Update: Bought my second Ruger .357

The Security Six really put the hook in me for Ruger revolvers, so when this new GP 100 Blued six inch came up on Gunbroker for 350.00, I couldn't say no.

Ruger GP 100 6" Blued, New in the Box: 350.00

Wolff trigger spring kit: 10.50

Millett Scope: 29.95

Weigand Combat scope rail: 49.95

Hogue exotic hardwood grips (on the way): 39.95

Owning a wheelgun that will make the AK haters soil themselves: Priceless.

Can't wait to shoot this beast in.

Careful now these things are addictive got a speed six 4" blue on the way and a couple of 2 3/4" Blue and SS I prefer the fixed sights of the speed and service six's.

I just found a good deal on this guy:

The owner sold at a discount because the rod had been bent and unscrewed itself somehow, wedging it in place. Took a little bit of tweaking but it's fine now.

I think these are the best magnums around for the money. Tougher than a Smith and about 1/3rd the price of a Python.

4 inch blued , 6 inch stainless , 30 years and 26 years respectively , Smiths and Colts have come and gone but the two Security Sixes are still here. Digest anything I can put through them from 110s to stout 158 loads , have taken deer , hogs and black bear with them though for the latter two I generally use one of my Redhawks or my old Blackhawk in .44 mag , they've been on countless lower 48 backpacking trips , bounced around in gloveboxes etc.

The only Smith I still own is a model 24 3 inch , while I personally detest Bill Ruger's politics I sure as heck can't fault his revolvers. And I'll likely buy the next 2 and 3/4s Security Six I run across at a reasonable price just to make a trio.
