""Springfield Armory, Inc. in Ill (not to be confused with the now-defunct Springfield "Government" Armory in Mass.) makes 'em brand-new. They're about $1500.00"

If you call a rifle with mostly 60 year old used and refinished parts brand new.

The reciever is a new cast unit. The barrel and wood is new.

The rest of the parts are used."

Oh! I didn't know that! Well then, CMP is looking better and better. After all, what can you do to an M1 receiver, short of taking a plasma cutter to it or running over it with a tank, that's going to hurt it?

I was talking to my FFL neighbor on Sunday night. He said that he had ordered a Springfield, Inc. M1 for a guy, and ended up sending it back twice for premature clip ejection. I told him I thought that they fixed that problem way back during WWII by increasing the lug height on the bullet guide, and I was surprised that SA, Inc. was still having that problem. I guess if they were using old early-WWII bullet guides, then that explains it.

I got a Greek field grade from CMP last year, and was VERY happily surprised at how accurate it is, the lack of dings, scratches, etc onywhere, and even the parkerizing is practically mint except the last couple inches of barrel, where I admit is is almost completely gone. Stock was grungy and discolored as heck, and the upper handguard is a different, lighter type of wood, but some Purple Power industrial cleanser/degreaser, a green scrubbie pad, a light sanding, some stain and tung oil later, I'm pretty happy with it.CMP is great, and hard to bet. Had I the cash, I would have loved a Correct grade too, but, a FG is what I could afford, and it does fine by me. Cant imagine ever selling it anyway, so all matching and value wasnt a big deal in the end for me. Still would have been cool, but oh well.

dont foget pics when it arrives!!!!

I was JUST at the CMP north today. That was my first time.

This is what I looked like when I entered: :what:

This is what I looked like as I slumped out the door, upon realizing that I had left my birth certificate at home. :banghead:

Fortunate for me, I had to make the trip for a business matter all the same.

Better order the 1907 sling now and a bayonet.

Oh... Done. :D + softcase, cleaning supplies, 40 little yellow capped pots of lubriplate, Army operator's manual, combo tool, and about 1200 rds of Greek M2 Ball. :D :D

Ah, the cleaning supplies.....I would get a muzzel end bore guide, these can be had at Champions Choice, or Creedmore Sports. I would use a good coated rod as well. About any high speed wheel bearing grease can be used for lube. Right now I using seal glid which is a high temp grease I got from Napa.

Don't be taking off the gas Cyl every time you clean. Gas Cyl to barrel fit in important and gets loose with remove and replace. The Gas Cly is self cleaning to boot. The only time the gas cyl. could become a problem is after days and days of heavy use, like combat.

Once the rifle is out of the stock, it will take about 60 rounds to get it to shoot like it did before you took it out of the stock. I take mine out of the stock once a year for general cleaning and lube. If the rifle is exposed to rain or heavy dust, then all bets are off.

Find a John C. Garand match. You and your wife would have a hoot and meet like minded people. It could be the start of a new hobby.

I was gonna get a bore guide, however, I think I may just pick up a .30 cal boresnake and see how that works.

4. Proof of membership in an affiliated club.

WHAT?!?!?

What is that all about? I have to be a member of the Garand Collector's Association BEFORE I can order a Garand? Is some sort of club membership really mandatory to order?

Any old shooting club? What if I have 500 acres and don't want to be in a shooting club?

Um, there's a lot of different clubs you can belong to. The CMP could require you to be a member of their organization, but their charge is to promote marksmanship nationwide, hence their affiliate club program. I'm sure this requirement alone has helped local clubs to recruit members. It's been an overall good thing for shooting advocacy.

The CMP has a complete list of affiliate clubs on their website at http://www.odcmp.com

Got my SG Springfield before Christmas. Pristine 5 million gun in DOD stock. Cosmo in action. Looks unfired. Saw one just like it on auction for $1200. Also have a 1943 Springfield that has more character(rougher). Can't decide which I like more. Sometimes you just get lucky.

I'm wondering how to get the cosmoline off before relubing everything.

Would a heat gun work? I could field strip it, lay the metal components on some newspaper on the lawn or something, and just run a heat gun over it until all the cosmo melted away...

What i found most exciting about getting my CMP garand (years ago during the Clinton admin) was the fact it was delivered to my house by the USPS, my local mailman probably freaked..LOL...Ironic that the administration at the time was anti-gun (brady/clinton/etc etc) yet my 30 cal rifle shows up on my doorstep compliments of good ole uncle sam!!! yee haw!!! lol.

That's what clinched it for me too.

While the GCA is reputed to be a good organization as far as info provided, I joined the Nebraska Marksmanship Association. $5 and I'm good to go.

CMP stands for Civilian Marksmanship Program. It is to foster marksmanship skills amongst the public. It sells Garands in order to finance their operations.

They are not the "Cheap Awesome Garand Providers To Everyone Who Wants One RIGHT NOW Program." If you don't like their rules, buy one from SOG or Century that has import marks all over it and is overpriced with none of the quality customer service the CMP has.
