Kel-Tec Sub 2000 Range Report

I took my new Kel-Tec Sub 2000 (Glock 17 version) out to the range today. I’m happy to say that the gun was awesome. No failures of any kind through 100 rounds of Walmart/Winchester 100 round bulk pack. I used the regular 10 round mag and also a 17 and 33 round Glock magazine. This ammo is very dirty. I wasn’t really trying for accuracy (this was more of a function test, (and it is only 15 degrees today with a very high wind chill) but the S2K seemed accurate enough. Not as accurate as my Hi-Point, but this may have been the result of my unfamiliarity with the Kel-Tec handling characteristics. It does feel a little shorter than the Hi-Point, and doesn’t point as naturally. The trigger is not nearly as bad as some have reported. It’s a little springy, but consistent and feels pretty good in my opinion. Working the action to chamber a round was also much easier and natural feeling than I expected. Overall the KT Sub handled very well. As has been reported the S2K is not conducive to wearing ear muff protection. I tried using muffs at first, but had to switch to regular ear plugs to get a good sight picture. I didn’t adjust my sights, but I am shooting consistently a little to the right. If the S2K continues to do this well, I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a handy little pistol caliber carbine. This is especially true for anyone using a handgun compatible with the sub as their primary HD gun. Not to mention the S2K just looks and feels pretty cool. If I had to choose between the Hi-Point and the Kel-Tec I would choose the Kel-Tec. I say this based on the design of the S2K, particularly the ability to use high quality hi-cap magazines and the ability to fold the carbine, not on function or handling.

Very nice report. Mirrors my experience except that I found my Sub2K to be a little more accurate than my Hi-Point. My Sub2K uses S&W59 style mags (same as my KT P-11 carry piece).

The KT ergonomics take some adjustment. I added the butt pad which extends the stock by an inch and I found that to be quite useful. I had to adjust to holding the gun high on my cheek to get a proper sight picture. No problem, I got used to it fairly quickly.

Main feature of the KT is the quick fold/quick deploy ability which makes it my favorite car/travel/motel gun. It fits into the smallest briefcase.

Mine has been pretty much flawless since the beginning.

I'd like to put a pistol scope on it but the folding scope mount makes me wonder if it will hold zero after closing/opening..

The gun is loads of fun to shoot.

Just thought I'd add a minor update for anyone considering the S2K. Although, I've not got enough rounds through this gun to declare it a HD gun, I did take it to the range tonight and put 50 rounds of Silvertip Hollowpoints through it without a single failure. Total is 100 fmj and 50 hp. So far it seems to feed both types of rounds fine. The same can be said for the Hi-Point 9mm Carbine which has the same round count/type without a failure. Both firearms have exceeded my expections so far.

Also received some Kel-Tec accessories today (sling, dust cover, range bag, and extra key). The range bag is okay if your looking for the smallest carry bag possible, but there are much better alternatives available.
