Hi folks,

A group of good old boys came to the range at about the same time as a friend and I. I spilled a brick of .22 ammo on the bench, and a 14 year old kid who was with the older men helped me pick them up. He wasn't really shooting any of his group's guns, so I offered to let him shoot my .22 Savage 64 with a small scope.

He said he hadn't really shot many guns, so I sat there and taught him how to shoot mine, and we went through a magazine shooting at a metal spinny target about 25 yards away. The older men were pleased when the kid really liked my gun and told them he wanted one of his own.

As his group were leaving, one of the men gave me a really nice scope - an extra, he said, that he had carried around for a while. It's much nicer than mine. I guess it was a thank-you gift for doing that for his kid.

Good for you!

Good deeds are their own reward, but sometimes they do get rewarded by others.

You're welcome to shoot at my place any time.

Great story, and nicely handled all around.

Every trip to the range I make an effort to talk to other folks during cease fires. There's always someone friendly and interesting to pass the time with. You meet some nice people in the shooting sports.

Great story, its fun getting people engaged in the hobby isn't it? :)

I've recently been getting a lot of the kids on my swim team shooting and we've been having a blast. I have much more fun socializing with people at the range than I ever would on websites like Facebook or Twitter. Society becomes to dependent on things like that nowadays...seems so few people take the time to talk to someone and get to know them face to face.

Well done Spaz. I wager you will remember that as one of your finer days at the range.

The Marysville Rifle Club puts on Hunter Sight-in Days during the month before hunting season opens. Most of the members get in some or most of their required work hours at Sight-in, and I'm no exception. It is a real pleasure to help folks, some of whom are noobs, get their rifles zeroed and maybe even pass on some knowledge.

Really? We'd have a full blown revolt at my club if someone proposed that. The month before hunting season is by far the busiest time, with folks milling around for a long time waiting for a bench to open up... adding newbies and non members into the mix during prime time would not be popular.

Spaz-- Good on ya for helping the kid out.

Thanks for adding another shooter to our ranks!
I'll bet he remembers that day a lot longer than you do. Who knows? Maybe someday in the future a President of the NRA will tell us about the nice guy at the range that got him started shooting all those years ago....
(It could happen;))

There are, of course, exceptions to every rule, but here's the rule (usually): Hunters and shooters tend to be some of the most helpful people to one another. Followed closely by bagpipers. No, I'm not kidding. I'm involved in the hunting/shooting community and the piping community. Both are far more helpful than some others that view their own personal knowlege and experience to be diminished if they share it.

I mentored a hunting relative newbie this past weekend. It is in my best interest to tell him everything i can and make him a successful hunter. This increases the ranks of my sport and therefore strengthens my position.

I think everyone is most helpful to their own community. The real hero in spaz'z story is the kid. Not only did he help pick up the ammo, Spaz ended up getting a good piece of glass out of the young mans kindness :D

Any time there's a kid at the range they're welcome to shoot any gun I have with me as long as they can safetly handle it.
I'll pay for the ammo.
If there's a female ther that is thinking about getting a gun I, have she's welcome to a magazine or cylinder to try it out.

We need new shooters

"You meet the nicest people at the gun range......."

And you spaz are amongst them. Good for you, good for them.

I have to agree, the schmuck-to-gentleman ratio is much wider in the shooting community than society in general. As we all know, there are gawdawful exceptions but for the most part, yeah.

I've often wondered if the gentlemanly temperament isn't fostered by the serious that results in the awareness of possibility of an accidental death if irresponsible with the gear.

Ever since I was in my single-digits around my grampa, uncles, and their friends when they shot, you could sense a vibe of "honor" in the air.

The example/s go a long ways

...

Outstanding "course of events" and one that makes us gun/owner's/operators feel "the_good" of it all and sharing such "knowledge" with others..

Just because, it always brings joy (to all)

Especially me when I read your post/story and the "joy of giving" works both ways without thought of any rewards other than, "doing what is right"

Well done brother,

Ls

Thanks for all the kind words. I think, as shnook said, it's the seriousness that fosters a deep respect and sense of mutuality. Plus, it's a pleasure to teach a young person about something you're interested in.

I'll be sure to pay it forward when I can. :)

One of the first times I went shooting, I was shooting my .22 rifle and the gentleman next to me and my dad gave us a pile of .22LR. I try to be as friendly as possible as long as the other person is willing to do the same.

No, I'm not kidding. I'm involved in the hunting/shooting community and the piping community.

Do you do both activities at the same time?

I could imagine the reaction of hunters in the woods hearing a bagpipe approaching.:D
