NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans-based rap artist already wanted in his hometown for probation violation was arrested in Memphis, Tenn., and charged in the shooting of two deputies who were searching an apartment for heroin.

Tab Virgil Jr., a 22-year-old rapper who performs under the name "Turk," was booked with attempted first-degree murder.

Shelby County SWAT deputy Chris Harris, 29, was in critical condition Wednesday at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis with jaw, hip and leg wounds. Officials said he was steadily improving after surgery.

Jason Pagenkopf, 31, also assigned to the SWAT unit, was shot in the neck and was recovering at home.

The shooting happened Monday afternoon.

Virgil was one of three people inside the apartment when the officers approached the front door and announced their presence, Shelby County Sheriff Mark Luttrell said. The officers immediately came under fire, Luttrell said.

"There is a criminal element that is showing absolutely no respect for the law," Luttrell said.

The two people in the apartment with Virgil were questioned and released. Virgil, who has been wanted in New Orleans on a probation violation since March, is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Memphis police officials said no heroin was found in the apartment, although officers did confiscate a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

At least it sounds like the guys will be okay. It wasn't a no knock either.

Make you a nickle bet that Turk will sign a deal to release an album and it'll go top 10 because of suburban white kids buying it.

Just what we need...another "playa".

My question is why didnt other members of swat take him out? Never seemed smart to raid a place you know there are guns/drugs and all nicely knock on door and say police

My best wishes for the wounded officers.

However, for the Sheriff quoted in the article --

"There is a criminal element that is showing absolutely no respect for the law," Luttrell said.

He gets this weeks DUH award.

Why didn't the story state explicity that the officers were serving a valid warrant? Media bias, or just sloppy reporting?

The news story appears to contradict itself.

The 1st sentence says that the officers were shot while searching the apartment, implying that the had identified themselves and entered the residence to conduct a search.

The 6th and 7th sentences say that they immediately came under fire after approaching the front door and "announcing" themselves.

If the occupants of the residence were listening to music or otherwise engaged and did not hear or understand the officer's announcement, and the officers were shot while forcing entry, I would have to say that a case for justification might be made.

The fact that no drugs were found is relevant to the justification issue. People engaged in illegal activity should reasonably expect the cops to come busting in on them. Law abiding citizens who are minding their own business should be able to reasonably conclude that people breaking their door down are bad guys, regardless of in what industry they are gainfully employed.

Edited to add:

If the suspect knew or should have known that there was a valid fugitive warrant out for him, he could have no reasonable belief that the men coming in were anyone except the police.

No heroin found?

Hmmm....

Why were the other occupants of the apartment not charged as accomplices?

Hmmm...

Why didnt the other SWAT officers kill the shooter?

Hmmm...

Who says it wasn't a no knock? The police or the other occupants?
