Let's see what the most commonly owned rifle cartridge on THR is

Well, not just Geezers. I am only 51; but my 30-06 was given to me at 15 when my fathers uncle passed and the extended family knew that I was showing an interest in shooting (it came with a WWII M1 carbine, which I also still have).


I just realized that .30 Carbine isn't even on your list.

Looks like the creedmore might not be as popular as I thought.

The 6.5 Creedmoor didn’t exist even ten years ago. Lot of us have shirts, shoes and underwear that’s older than that.

The 30-06 for example has been around for over 100 years, everyone should have or have had one by now.

Kind of like how many people here have owned a bicycle vs how many have owned a Segway. I bet there will be folks here that have to google what a Segway is and they have been around longer than the Creedmoor.

A glaring omission is .303 British. That should be on your list.

Others in my safe, but not complaining about them not being listed, are .300 Savage and 300 AAC Blackout.

I kinda figured 5.56 would be in the top 3 along with 30-06 and 308 splitting the ballot and 30-30 getting an honorable mention but I didn't expect 7.62x39 to be so popular here.

Might be interesting to do one of these with just obsolete and milsurp calibers: .303,.300 Savage, 7.35 Carcano, .401 Winchester, etr.

Considering it has only existed for about 10 years and only become mainstream in the last 2-3 years it is doing pretty good. At this point ahead of 7 RM, 7-08, 25-06, and 300 WM.

I'm not at all surprised at some doing well. I don't know of a single person who doesn't own a 30-30. But in 40 years of hunting I've seen less than 5 guys actually hunting with one. 30-06 is approaching the same fate. Most everyone has one, I have 2, but neither has been hunting in years.

The 7.62X54R is the most surprising to me. I guess there is more interest in the milsurp rifles than I realized.

Trying to shed a few now. I just have way to many.

The Big 7 ain't going anywhere as long as I can still carry it.

Given what rifle sales have looked like for the past 20 years, it's no surprise .223/5.56 is on top.

The number of .30-06s is somewhat surprising. I guess the outstanding gun population is huge. It happens to be one of my least favorite hunting rounds, but there sure are a lot of them. I guess between Garands, M1903s, and M1917s there were over 10 million produced for Uncle Sam, so that may be skewing the stats quite a bit.

That's certainly a different question. Things like my 7mm Mag get shot essentially zero - in the ideal year it would be fired exactly twice - once to confirm zero, and one elk. Although I may start using the .264WM for elk. But neither will ever be a volume rifle.

Exactly! 5.56/.223 is running away with the poll but it might not look the same if a vote was taken on which we shoot the most. I have three 5.56/.223 rifles but I shoot 300 Blackout way more than 5.56mm because it's quieter when suppressed. Heck, I shoot my .375 H&H way more than my 5.56/.223 rifles.

Ha! Not quite Sonny. I’m only 35. My top 5 hunting rifles.... 44mag, 444, 45-70, 30-06, .223 (non AR). The “geezers” of today will be the “wise men” of tomorrow.

I bet if you did a poll on how many rounds do you shoot in a year the 223 would win over anything else by about 5 times over. I bet if you also did a poll on how many of each caliber rifle you own the 223's gap would also be extended. Many people have 5 or 6 of them and shoot them in volume. I have 3 223 rifles in my possession and although there are other rifle I shoot more often, I shoot the most volume of 223 just due to the economy of it.

I'm 30, and I have a 30-06. It's for collection purposes. I've never been hunting and never plan to, so I'm not at all concerned about what the latest and greatest hunting caliber is for whatever game.

I do think this skews older for an internet forum though.

I hope just because I have a soft spot for somewhat obsolete cartridges ie, 22 Hornet, 257 Roberts, 730 Waters etc I have not been characterized as a geezer. I'm only 53 years young.
