Ling for 870P

I want to put a sling on my 870P, the kind that will hold a few rounds. I see what appears to be some sort of mounting bracket on the front, but nothing in the stock. So I will have to drill, right? It is a synthetic stock. This bracket under the forearm is square with some sort of a hole, (the gun is at home and I am at work). I am assuming this is for the sling but it could it be for something else like a light? My 870P is stock standard, right out of the box.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I'd put a plain carrying strap on it and skip the sling that doubles as a bandolier. Those carry enough weight to pull the gun off target if it swings when you have the gun shouldered.

Sounds like you need a rear swivel all right, the bracket up front is indeed a sling bracket if the hole is about 1 1/4" wide and 1/4" tall. Which kind of synthetic stock is on the gun- a Speedfeed or a Remington thin wall?

All I have is the original Remmington owners manual which is a little lite on information. Any way to tell by looking at the stock? Thanks for the answer.

I would check out www.spectergear.com. They've got some good 3 point tac sling solutions for the 870 and pretty much anything else you might have. I like it because of all the different carry options, check it out. It's compatible with both standard and aftermarket buttstocks. It comes with a front mounting bracket that fits in between the barrel and magazine tube...really sturdy. Instead of having shells on your sling or in a side-saddle (I don't like how it effects the balance), I got a buttstock shell holder from Specter Gear. It puts a little bit more weight in the back, and with my 870P Max, it helps to balance out the Surefire forend. Hope that helps.

Well...

First of all, what configuration is the stock? Conventional, conventional with magazine tubes or pistol grip shoulder stock? How does it sound when you thump it? Best way to tell for sure is to take off the recoil pad and look.

If it's a thin wall stock you will most likely want to install the swivel/swivel stud in the toe of the stock about 2 1/2- 3" from the end of the stock (pad included). If it's a thick wall stock you might think about installing the swivel/stud in the side of the stock (left side that is) on the midline about the same distance from the end of the pad, if the bracket on the front can be rotated to the left side. If not you might want to stick with the location in the bottom of the stock.

It was a fad for a while (might still be in some circles) to install the rear swivel/stud in the bottom of the pistol grip. I wouldn't do that, it shortens the loop of the sling too much for some types of transition moves IMO. Go for a 3-point or single point if you like (the single point requires a loop to be installed between the front of the stock and the back of the receiver) but I find a simple carry strap will do what I need with less expense and hassle.
