I was having the darnest time :banghead: choosing an AR. There were limited choices at the LGS. I initially put money down on Layaway on a S&W M&P 15 ORC, but later changed to the LMT as it had the SPMOD stock and sights. I really would like something in the line of mil spec as we are collecting military firearms, and cannot get the real deal (M4?). My question is how does the LMT stack up as a SD and varmint gun as well as a it's MILSPEC characteristics. I will also be using it for Tactical Rifle Practice. The firearm is a LMT Defender 2000. Thanks. Any input is an education. PS there were no Colts.

An LMT Defender 2000 is a fine, professional grade rifle. I don't know what goes into Tactical Rifle Practice, but it should do everything you need of it and more if you want a self defense rifle.

The LMT D2K has straight pins on the FSB rather than tapered, and they don't parkerize under the FSB. IIRC those are the only two features (less the civvy 16" bbl and semi auto only) that don't comply with the M4 TDP. The SOPMOD stock doesn't technically comply with the TDP for a stock M4 either, but it is an approved upgrade.

In short, it's a fine choice for a hard use AR / M4gery.

friscolatchi: My SON & I both have a LMT for several years and shoot them quite a bit. I have a heavy barreled varmint model and my Son has a tacticle model. I use mine to shoot PD`S, Coyotes, and Ground Hogs. My uses his to hunt with to but also it at the 3 GUN Matches we have in this area. WE have never had any problems with our two LMT`S. My Son is a COP and has used his at a LE Patrole Rife Coures. They fired more than a 1000 rounds in just a few days, and again he said he did not have any problems, and He was one of the few that didn`t have any. IMHO (( LMT )) makes a great high end AR. And I would buy another LMT without question. GOOD LUCK TO YOU: ken

LMT makes fine weapon systems. I purchased an LMT MWS308 as a post-deployment gift to myself after OEF 11-12. It's effectively an M110 that offers a fast change barrel/caliber feature, think 6.5 Grendal and like. The fit, finish, and shooting characteristics are the best I've had the pleasure of dealing with in the M16/M4/AR15 series of rifles. It's been %100 reliable and extremely accurate considering its 16" chrome lined barrel. I can get sub MOA groups out of it when I do my part and have had no issues smashing steel M9 sillohettes at 650-1000 yards. I want an MRP myself, you can't go wrong with LMT. I believe they're the best bang for your buck in the high end AR variant market.

Wow, thanks load guys. I see by your posts that I have much to be thankful for regarding your advice regarding by question, and your service to our Country. I'm itching to head over to the LGS today and plink down another two hundred and place the rest on credit. Man I'm psyched! Thanks again. This will be my 1st AR and very likely my last and hopefully can pass it on to my son. I really wanted something that has quality and can take abuse.

I really would like something in the line of mil spec as we are collecting military firearms, and cannot get the real deal (M4?).

Is there no gun store in your area that does transfers? LMT's are great guns but the Colt 6920 is as close as you can get to an M4. You can get it even closer if you SBR it.

My first car was a 65 Chevy Impala 283 cu. That was 42 years ago. The car did not last long. With age comes responsibility. I suppose my father paid as much for that car as I'm paying for this rifle!

If you're gonna buy something, you might as well spend the money and make yourself happy! Lmt has an excellent reputation.

Fremmer, you're right. Judging by the responses so far, it appears that this will be something that I wont regret purchasing. I found a Colt 6400 about an hour from here and I don't know much about the Colts aside from what I read here on THR. I'm most likely to make the purchase this coming weekend, that is if it rains. (Staining the siding of the house.)

Spend the money and get something nice, something my grandfather taught me years ago when I was a kid.

you won't regret the lmt. they make a fine weapon that will hold it's own against anyting else during hard use. the defender is a perfect "first ar"....just don't kid yourself about it being the last :D. my next will likely have a defender a2 lower.

Though I don't own one, from everything I've seen LMT is an excellent choice. Myself, I went with BCM and Daniel Defense midlengths.

Of course Colt is the yardstick when you're talking M4 and milspec. Have you looked at your local Walmart? Some do carry the Colt 6920, the WM a mile away from me has one for $1047! However they may not carry them in NY.

Correctomundo. In my part of the state (1 1/2hr from NYC) you are lucky to get a pellet gun at Walmart. I did find a Colt 6400 about an hour away from here.

Nah, a Colt 6920 isn't the closest thing to an M4... the barrel length is wrong. A BCM 14.5" M4 profile is as close to the real deal as you can get. You can pin the flash hider if you don't want to get into NFA legal territory.

Ok here's the latest. Today my son and I went to a shop about 45 min from my house that had a load of AR's. I found an old LE model Colt circa 95, stamped AR15-A2 on the lower as well as "LE ONLY stamped there as well. It came with a heavy barrel and flash suppressor, 1-9 twist, no mags slings etc. (Please forgive my inexperience with these firearms). Short and long of it, to our limited eyes, it resembled a Vietnam War era CAR15. It appeared perfectly USED, although the barrel didn't have a scratch on it. My son, who was wearing a Vietnam Era helmet was WIDE EYED and pressed me to buy it. I almost completed the paperwork, despite my misgivings about buying a 90's era AR. Reliability. If it crumped, how much would it cost to fix. There were no guarantees with this one. With the asking price being 800, it would cost another 100 dollars to make it NY compliant, and I still would have an old gun, albiet a cool looking used police AR. Further questioning to the shop owner revealed that he had a NIB Colt LE6920 for 1099 in the back room. Add another hundred bucks and viola, I had what I would consider a real bonafide M4 and a Colt to boot. My son was almost in tears and wouldn't talk to me for a whole 10 minutes. Oh well. Does daddy know best?
The LMT costs 1500 and has a non threaded target barrel. The Colt will have to have the Flash suppressor removed and a brake added in it's place, the bayonet lug removed and the stock pinned per NYS regulations. It should be ready next week. I asked the guy if he can make a deal on both guns but he would not, saying, "they're flying out of here". As you can tell, I'm pretty green when it comes to these things, but it appears that the consensus from various posts is that both rifles are quality. I feel that I would have been ok with either rifle, ie LMT, but I'm happier with the Colt.

Thanks for all your input. Everyone has been a great help.

PS. I'm still thinking about that Colt AR15 A2. Any experience?

Thanks for the confidence. I think that it can be reversed if I move to another state. I wonder if having an LExxxxxx SN makes any difference?

You definitely made the right choice. Lmt is a good gun but not worth $400 more as far as I know. The older rifle was probably a rip off

Thanks Taliv. I really feel good about my choice. Kept the kid happy as I was able to get a small Multicam pullover (used at a Military surplus store) for him. Funny what makes us happy. Now I have to work on the ammo. SD weights, Varmint weights. I suspect that heavier for SD and lighter for Varmints.
