I mostly shoot lead bullets in my carbines, but I finally got my 1894ss in 44 mag back from a long term family loan (yay!), and want to start loading for it. I want to try some hot jacketed stuff since I have plinking loads for plenty of other guns. I'm looking at 200 and 240 grn jacketed soft points because marlin's stupid twist rate won't stabilize the heavy stuff.
It looks like some of the best powders are h110 and 4227, 2400 etc. I don't have those. (or at least, not much h110) what I do have a LOT of is accurate 1680. It's too slow for handgun rounds, but would it work out of a 20" rifle barrel? seems like it should. However, I cannot find any data for it, but I have come across posts like "1680 works great in a rifle" Does anybody have any insight into this? I did find the accurate manual #2, a load for a 355grn lead bullet using 18 grains for 1680

Your .44 mag rifle is still a handgun cartridge. For the most part, you load for the cartridge, not the platform. When you can't find any data for a particular powder/bullet /caliber, there's generally a good reason. You also don't need anything heavier than 240 grainers either....if you do, you should probably jump up in caliber. I know powders are hard to find right now, but I'd wait till I could find something appropriate.....or I'd load up the last of that H110.

If you are looking for big velocity, H110/W296 is your answer. Personally, I use IMR4227 or 2400, but the velocity winner in my .41MAG Marlin is H110. I was looking at the Accurate load data... I don't see 1680 until you hit the .454 Casull and the other big boys. Interestingly, all of the Magnum +.40's list AA5744... which I find quite odd. That would seem the equivalent to me of loading IMR4198 in the .41MAG...
