Anybody ever mount a scout scope in the standard position on the receiver???

Yes, but if you’re not using offset/gooseneck mounts/rings then you can only do that with the Leupold scope scope (6” or better of eye relief) on a long receiver. All other scout scopes have too long of an eye relief (9”+).

Having your eye too close to the scope has negative consequences. Doesn’t make sense to put yourself that position.

To be more pacific. Mounting a 4x Weaver Scout Scope on a 270 rifle. The advertised eye relief is 9 inches. That tells me anything further than 9 inches would be a problem. Not sure if I was doing, say, five inches after it was mounted would be a problem. I am looking for a very light, durable optic for this rifle. So instead of trying to mount that thing as far to the rear, I could mount it with maybe 4 or 5 inches of eye relief and call it a day???

I have two of the recently manufactured Weaver 4x28 Scout scopes. One bought new a couple years ago, and one bought new a couple months ago.

One of them is currently unmounted so I set it on a table and set the scope at different distances from the edge of that table to check eye relief. I used the edge of the table as my cheek/eye stop.

The usable eye relief range of that Weaver for me is 8" to 12". Anything shorter than 8" or further than 12" and I was getting vignetting.

Setting the scope 6" from my eye had severe vignetting, with the scope essentially unusable at 5" away from my eye as it was like trying to see through a straw.

If you're contemplating doing that you'd be much better off just mounting a standard 1-4X scope conventionally. I'd 10X rather do that than have a scout scope mounted anywhere.

The eye box will be centered at 9”, such anything longer or shorter than that by very much will be a problem.

I know you've changed ideas by this point, but FYI, the leupold fx2 2.5x20 scope has about a 5" eye relief and I mounted it forward on a marlin receiver. The eye releif was too long for a standard mount and too short for a scout. Might have worked very well for you.
