Long range hunting?

See, i dont see any of that the least bit unreasonable. As I said, its all about knowing one's limitations and staying within them. I'd rather hunt with a well-practiced, safety conscious youngster than an older person who kows it all, isn't open to instruction. and is quite simply unsafe. Like someone's proficient range, its not up to ME to decide what is right for someone else. Just like I dont know someon'e long rnge ability, I have no idea how mature a child I don't know may be......

That would be like the Disney Davy Crockett song, "..killed a bar, when he was only three"
But it would be, "..Killed a boar, when he was less than three."

Never thought of it like that but you do have a point. He was however two weeks shy of his 4th birthday when he got his first hog by himself with me sitting beside video taping the shot.

Two weeks before his 4th birthday

I don't see shots at that distance unreasonable provided you and your equipment are capable.

One of the places I hunt whitetail deer I cover a valley during modern gun season from a spot where I have around 500 yards shots in one direction and about 375 the other direction. I am positioned where most shots are less than 400 yards but can cover nearly the entire valley from that spot.

In one particular spot that measures just at 375 yards I have regularly heart punched deer with my A-bolt 7mmwsm. You just have to know your gun and how to hold to make the shot.

As you get past 400 yards stuff starts to get real. There is a big difference between a 400 yard shot and a 600 yard shot so on and so forth.

I guess my initial reaction to this thread was negative. I'm still a little steamed by a group of bear "hunters" I've observed the last 2 years shooting across the valley (800 yds. or so) through the tree canopy. Fortunately, this year they must have spooked the bear enough so that he ran to a member of our hunting party who was able to kill a nice 325# boar.

But as I think back on my own hunting career, not every shot I've taken was a sure thing either. I've shot at them running, through brush, and even one long shot (425 yds.). They don't always stand and pose broadside, and sometimes you have to make a split second decision. So who am I to judge others?

I have a friend who has killed dozens of deer and elk; nearly all of them under 100 yards. He refers to any shot longer than a hundred yards as a "long" shot. He values hunting that gets him close to his prey, then he takes a head shot. Nearly every deer or elk he has taken has dropped where he stood. Conversely, my brother killed a bear at 600 yards. Both are good hunters.

I have not killed many deer compared to most. I killed my 13th deer this season.
However, my experience is like your friend's. Only 2 or 3 of them have been over 100 yds with the farthest being about 175.
