Hey all. I have spent most of my time on the high-road chatting about auto-loaders and revolvers, but I've always wanted to get into the rifle game with something larger than a 22.

I'm trying to find out what it would take to get a good, scoped mosin nagant. From what I can see, I can get the gun with irons for around $100, but when I start looking at scope options, things get very complicated.

My initial idea was to go all replica, and put together a WW2 rifle with a PU mount, but buying the gun already made increases the price significantly ($500 +). I don't have the tools to do the work myself, and would probably be in the same range if I bought the parts and had a gunsmith set it up. I've found the scopes with mount from $150-300, and would need to buy a bent bolt handle, which should run around $50.

Now I'm looking to see if anyone here has had a good experience with alternative mount options. While I'm not opposed to spending the money to get the gun I want, I'm not going to discount my other options.

Rock Solid Industries makes about the best mount for a Mosin. Its nothing like the original PU type but it is the most solid setup you can buy. The only downside... they are a hundred bucks a pop.

You could also try Kalinka Optics, they have real European/soviet stuff. I think JG Sales has PSO type scopes right now for $60-$75 maybe, That might be neat on a mosin, but you would have to figure out some sort of side mount.

That isn't too bad. How exactly does it attach? It looks like it's screwed in and would require3 some drilling.

Ever take a look at the jmeck scope mounts? Ive got one myself and love it. May seem flimsy but its rock solid.

still dont understand the deal with the mosins...yeah, neat guns I guess, but there are so many wider options for a rifle to do what you are looking for, they are cheap I guess...so that is the only reason I guess....spend some money get a nicer more suitable rifle.

Its not that hard to put a scope on a Mosin without drilling and bent bolts.
You can remove the rear sight, and put in a mount in its place, then attach a scope onto that. They're called long eye relief scopes.

The picture in the middle is my scoped M44 carbine.

The rock solid mounts use three screws to secure it. Two on the front of the receiver and one on the rear of the receiver on the side in the stripper clip guide area. They have to be drilled and tapped.
