Right now, I'm considering the idea of putting up a "want" ad for a Ruger firearm that I've been having a hard time finding on dealer shelves. The only issue is that this particular firearm (the Ruger PC9 carbine) was just released a couple years ago and had some functioning problems early on that seemed to have been ironed out more recently. If I put up a want ad for it, I have no idea if I'll be getting an early or more recent one. I fear that if I get an earlier one that someone is willing to part with, it could be one that has problems.

So anyway, I was just wondering what people have had for experience with Ruger's customer service on things like this. I know some companies will stand behind their product even if the current user isn't the original purchaser and will replace the item if it doesn't work right. Is Ruger one of them? Would they do a free replacement, or at least repair of a PC9 if I buy it second-hand?

I'm one of those people sort of surprised to discover that I own more Rugers than any other maker. All of them were bought used, and I've probably called Ruger to ask about parts a half-dozen times in 10 years. Every call ended with package in the mail, for free more often than not.

Now, you picked the worst month in a decade to try and buy a gun, nevermind a black one in 9mm, but that's not what you asked.

I bought a used LCP that had a cracked grip. I called Ruger and they said send it in. They sold me a shipping ticket that made it a bit cheaper ($50ish dollars) to ship the handgun back to them. They replaced the grip/housing and sent it back after firing 3 or 4 mags through it to confirm the bent lip on the mag was fine. I thought it would have been nice if they had replaced the mag, but other then that not much to complain about.

I have occasionally dealt with Ruger's customer service, and have been treated very well. I don't know specifically if Ruger will warranty a used gun, but don't recall being asked if I was the original owner in any of my dealings with Ruger customer service. Perhaps you should call Ruger with your question.....

I cannot comment on whether Ruger will replace/ warranty a firearm that has been through multiple owners. (As ab aside , if you suspect that a firearm is faulty - why would you buy it?)

My experience with Ruger CS : Work done properly and quickly ; fees more than reasonable.
A+ from where I sit.

I have owned four Ruger pistols. The most recent is a LCP II. Over be years I have received good service from CS when seeking info. I only has one issue with a Ruger that requires it be serviced. Ruger respired the defect at no charge, and they turned it around in a week door-to-door. I participate at Rugerforum.net. Ruger CS gets high grades there. Of course there are exceptions, but they are few and far between. Go for it..

I've sent several guns back Ruger for various problems and must say their CS is top drawer. They stand solidly behind what they manufacture.

It may be hard to find a argument against Ruger CS. Last year I bought a used RAR rimfire from my LGS and it wouldn't group on a pie plate at 15 yards. I sent it to Ruger and they informed me it had to be destroyed so they sent me a brand new one. Not bad for $225. My only complaint is that the one I sent in had a threaded barrel. The new one didn't. But at the price I paid I wasn't interested in arguing.

I think the issue some people have is when their gun meets Ruger's specifications, but not the shooter's specifications. An example is cylinder throat dimensions on the larger bore single actions. Sometimes they are too big, sometimes too small, but still usually within what Ruger set as the original dimension tolerance. In a case like that, it might be better to just have a local gunsmith deal with what you want done, instead trying to make Ruger do your custom gunsmithing for you. I had this done with my Vaquero .38/40 cylinder- the throats were a bit tight compared to the barrel groove diameter, and the chambers would accept factory Winchester Super-X 180 gr JSPs, but not Black Hills 180 gr LFPs, who's shoulder was significantly further forward. A hour or two with a chamber reamer / hone, and I was all set.

Their customer service is great. Of course they get lots of practice. I've had to have Ruger address issues more than all other gun makers combined. In fact the only other issue I ever had was with a S&W pistol bought in 1999. I've contacted Rugers CS at least a dozen times over the years. But the good news is that they made it right every time.

One word description of Ruger Customer Service Support from someone whose used them a number of times over the past 3 decades....Sterling!

I have used ruger cs 3 times in recent memory.
Long story short: they will do what it takes to satisfy the customer. They don't always get it right the first time .

1. New Lcr had to be sent back twice before cylinder would rotate.

2. Broke a rifle stock. Was sent the replacement free of charge. They sent the wrong 1 the first time though

3. Broken front sight on a rifle. They are sending me a new one free of charge.

I have only used their customer service once. I had rust spots under the grips on a SR 1911. They sent me a shipping label. I sent it in. It came back a week later without the rust spots & they also cleaned up another scratch a had put on it.

I'm like @edwardware somehow rugers have dominated my safe. Anytime I need anything they are responsive , fast & free. Absolutely top notch service and when I have sent something back, it comes back FIXED , wow. A certain other popular revolver maker turns out horrid junk priced higher and can't fix a sandwich . I have since abandoned the other maker in favor of guns that are robust, reliable and that have CS that works. I Love ruger. yeah, I said it.

What problems with the PC9?

I've had mine right at two years now and it has thousands of rounds through it. The only problem I've had is the extractor gave out a couple of months ago. I replaced it with a better quality part. The gun would still function, you just couldn't clear the chamber by pulling back the charging handle.

So far, none of my Rugers have had any issues, so I have had zero experience with their customer service. I have heard nothing but good things about them, which is why I have bought a few of their firearms.

Tons of guys on the sniper forums bashed the Rugers till the Precision came out....but I have several that will keep up with any Rem or customs I have built.....and I recently put a nice scope on a 6.5CM Precision for a guy and was amazed at how well it shot right out of the box..... Rugers are fine firearms and the customer service is good-

Just my experience-

The have excellent customer service because they’ve had a lot of practice at it over the years. When you inevitability have to send something back, perhaps more than once, they’ll be cool about replacing things.

Buddy of mine bought a 10/22 takedown that malfunctioned more than it worked correctly with 10 different ammo brands (which is HIGHLY UNUSUAL for a 10/22) sent it back to ruger who claimed they couldn’t find a problem. He had the same issues and sent it back again, that time they sent him a new gun.

So, overall 50/50. The best customer service is customer service you don’t have to use IMO.

I've only needed to call Ruger one time and I own several Ruger firearms. This one was a 10/22 given to my #2 grandson and it was missing the extractor and spring. Of course he brought it to grandpa to fix. I spoke to a nice lady and explained the situation and asked to purchase the parts. She told me she would send them right out. I asked if she was ready for my credit card number and she told me there was no charge. I know this is small beans but it was still very nice of Ruger.
