I'm planning on replacing the pistol I carry concealed every day (a Smith Model 6906) for something lighter, flatter and thinner-but for one that's just as reliable. I like hammers and safeties on pistols I carry close to my body. At this time, I'm considering the SA Model XD-E, the Ruger Model SR 9c and the SIG Model 365. Though a hammer is not essential, a manually operated safety is. Also, for capacity reasons, the pistol has to be chambered in 9mm Luger.

Finally, I want a quality IWB holster with a thumb-break to carry the pistol comfortably concealed in.

Thanks for any comments, opinions and especially inputs from those that might have experience with the pistols in question. Recommendations for other candidates sharing the same features are also welcome.

Lots of pistols are as reliable as your 6906, you'll just need to find one you like. I like the Springfield of those you mentioned.

Your requirement for a thumb break on you IWB excludes the best IWB extant today, the Sparks VM2. Pity that. . .

I have had the XDE since they came out. Good carry pistol, reliable, accurate, concealable and hammer. Single Stack is not my favorite but when I need single that is my carry.

Hammer fired, 9mm, high capacity, and thumb safety?

HK P30.

Now go find a holster.

If you want to dispense with an unnecessary demand for a manual safety, there’s a ton of options. A slicked up Beretta PX4 by Ernest Langdon would be an option for example, or one of his compact 92’s.

How about a 'version' of DA/SA...in a striker-fired 9mm? Light polymer frame.

My Walther P99 (AS) has no hammer, but can decock into a DA type of pull. Quite different than with the PPQ. What feels like a normal DA meets the "first pull" requirement of approx. 70,000 German police, plus thousands of Netherlands ("Dutch"), UK, Finnish officers etc.
* It has two (2) internal 'drop safeties', plus a firing pin safety.

The hammer-fired CZ 75D (PCR) in DA/SA is one of my other 9mms. Is it light enough for you? Really interesting, Very high quality, as with the P99.

Garbage triggers IMO. ^^^

Good triggers IMO. ^^^

I'd look at CZ, HK, and Sig personally if you want a hammer though Sigs mostly have decockers. I do not care for standard DA/SA HK triggers though, so I carry a LEM variant. However you can add a safety to a LEM gun.

Agree. Especially with the XDE. Low capacity and high weight considering its size, indifferent trigger.

The SRc is just a great little gun, both of mine had nice triggers and we're scary accurate for their size, shot well, safety was usable but ultimately why I got rid of them, didn't feel they needed it and it didn't quite work as well as my 1911 muscle memory, plus the grips were a bit too thin for me. Still, great guns.

The other one that comes to mind would be the Beretta PX4, one of the triggers can be had with a safety and if the OP is used to a slide mounted safety on the smith, that shouldnt be an issue.

If your goals are lighter, thinner, flatter with a thumb safety and max capacity then you want a 365 with safety. End of story. SR9c would be distant 2nd, but mine rusted on me and main spring housing pin would work it’s way loose on me so not really a fan. Many love it though.

Skip the thumb break unless you plan on doing somersaults wile rolling down a hill

If you want to dispense with an unnecessary demand for a manual safety, there’s a ton of options.

After a thirty year stint in le, I have my reasons for insisting on a thumb-break holster (and I'm aware that most iwb holsters don't have them-which is why I asked for advice on them) and a manually operated safety.

I'm still researching a replacement for my Smith Model 6906 pistol (it really is a bit too fat and heavy for "ideal" edc imo) and I really appreciate all of the good advice so far. But the more I think about it, the more I'm starting to believe needmorecowbell's recommendations have a lot of merit:

Coal Dragger's suggestion to look at the HK P30 is an interesting, if pricey, option.

Another fan of the Ruger SR9c; fits my smaller hand like a glove. Of the guns I have checked out some other choices would be the SIG P365, CZ P01, and CZ P07.
