Looks like I'm not in any trouble at all.

Looks like all of my previous comments to this thread have vanished. It still does not change my attitude about the situation of misplacing a gun. I work with sensitive material every day, we are not given a second chance. Misplace a document, forget to lock a safe, and you will loose your clearance and your job.

Tim;

"What's interesting is that the cop just "wrote you up" for possession, but since he was not a federal agent, he couldn't arrest you on violations for federal regulations, right? How did the information get to the US Attorney? Do local DAs pass this stuff up as they sift through the reports?"

I have no idea, but when I go to pick up my stuff I'll ask.

Battlespace;

It's nice to know that things -never- go wrong for you, wherever you are.

And I truly hope that if anything -does- go wrong, you enjoy the luck I have enjoyed.

In the meantime however, you might want to know that you come across as a miserable hardass with nothing better to do than crap on people who 'don't meet your standards.'

I had a boss like you once. No sympathy for anyone, no second chances, maximum punishment for any infraction. His department had the -highest- sick rate, absentee rate, and turnover like you would not believe.

-Everyone- detested him. The only reason he wasnt fired is -he- was perfect. Never late, never failed to cross the 't' or dot the 'i'.

The owner finally fired him, and put in a new boss. Production doubled in a week. Draw your own conclusions.

Last I knew "Mr. Perfect' was terrorizing a Mcdonalds.

The moral of this story is, just because you are -right- does not make you likeable, employeble, or -tolerable-.

Furthermore, I'm -not- in the govt, or any -other- organization that requires -any- standards. I can if I wish show up for 'work' ( I'm self employed ) So drunk I have to be rolled in in a beer barrel. (I dont drink, but I like the phrase. )

bottom line? I broke a law, paid a fine, and it's -over-. you may, if you wish, state that gun laws should be stricter to prevent dangerous idiots like myself from having any....

roguetek, bogie and others

I had put in a response, but forget it, I edited it out.

Okay - here is the response:

I want you to know that I am not an ogre. In my job I am not allowed an error in judgment, but the work is very satisfying and the pay is not too bad. I am ultimately responsible directly to you, the US taxpayers and citizens to assure certain parts of national security are not compromised. I really don't think you would like for me to be anything less in my job.

ummm. not to put too fine a point it, it's not your job, so why would your standards apply?

All of this is unrelated, off the clock stuff.

I-am- glad that you do your job, and that you take it so seriously...

but.... perhaps a vaction would be good? you seem -really- uptight.

anyhow, I re-state that I hope all is going well for you, and continues to do so.

You are right, I do need to take some time off. I have the maximum amount of leave accumulated right now. I plan on retiring in four or five years and will sell it back at that time, but in the meantime maybe a few days off would be good. Bow season is rapidly approaching and with a son and son-in-law itching to go, maybe I need to join them. Bow hunting has never been my thing, I like my Thompson Center Hawkin in .50 cal that I assembled from a kit 30+ years ago, but I guess I can bend to their prodding and take the plunge.

Hang in there with the gunsmith business. I admire someone with that skill and talent. Engravers especially perform work I wish I had the talent to do.

i'm almost done with a staghorn dagger I've ben working on, I'll post pics when its finished.

I just have to wait for the glue to dry, and finish some polishing.

I really wish the Government would relax their weapons policies. I can't go to the AF Reserve Center or the VA if I'm carrying, even with my permit. I don't mind storing my weapon while aboard the facility, it's more the "to and from" that concerns me. Even if they'd relax it to comply with Federal Firearms transportation laws, that would be good enough for me. (Unloaded, cased, etc.) The Minneapolis VA and the AF Reserve Center aren't exactly in "good" neighborhoods.

relaxing the rules, or at least providing a storage area at VA hospitals would be nice.

I walk out of there with a big bag of hi-end prescription psychoactive drugs every 3 months. and I have to drive thru one of the worst neighborhoods in the state to enter/leave. Ok this is Maine, so you big city folk prolly wouldt even notice.

As far as I know, VA Police are now truly police (formerly called security) have the ability to arrest if they feel like it. They can enforce the entire range of federal offenses committed on their property. Like most officers, they have the option of issuing a summons or just sending the report to the US Attorney's office and allowing them to review the matter.

Me too! Had you contacted the VAPD, they probably would have secured it for you in house.
