I held the S&W M&P Compact in 9mm today and REALLY LIKE IT!!! But, I have some questions.

1) Are these guns DAO, DA/SA, or what?

2) How is the reliability/shootability of these guns?

3) Are there many holsters available?

4) How bad is the recoil on the .40?

5) Is $499 the going price? The one I saw was at Gander Mountain here in TX.

Anyone have any general thoughts on this pistol as a CCW?

1) Are these guns DAO, DA/SA, or what?

They're like glocks or XDs...striker-fired, semi-cocked...so they're like a DAO with a lighter trigger pull and no second-strike capability.

2) How is the reliability/shootability of these guns?

They're new, so no idea.

3) Are there many holsters available?

Not yet, but there will be. Also, the full-size M&P40 will fit Glock 20/21 holsters, so the baby might fit something tupperware-flavored, too.

4) How bad is the recoil on the .40?

I don't think the compact .40 is out yet. The recoil of the full-sized .40 is very mild.

5) Is $499 the going price? The one I saw was at Gander Mountain here in TX.

No clue.

Anyone have any general thoughts on this pistol as a CCW?

If reliability is good, it should rock.

M&P 40

I have a 40 full size & a 9 compact and both shoot great, accurate and very lite recoil. I am also looking for iwb holsters, I have a blackhawk cqc holster that is for a Glock 20/21 and it works real well with the M&P 9,40 and 9 compact.

A 9C is my current CCW. It has been reliable with no failures.

"1) Are these guns DAO, DA/SA, or what?"

See second post. Very similar to a Glock.

"2) How is the reliability/shootability of these guns?"
Reliability seems to be very good for the most part with M&Ps. The gun has received many endorsements from those respected in the industry in a very short period. My particular M&Ps have been trouble free.

The shootability of the M&P full and compact is very good. The M&P Compact feels and carries like a Glock 26. The compact is very shootable and at least on par with other defensive firearms.

"3) Are there many holsters available?"
Yes, there are holsters available in leather and kydex. I prefer Comptac kydex and they do make holsters for both the full and compact. Note, the compact fits fine in full size holsters.

"4) How bad is the recoil on the .40?"
The .40C is not out yet. However, on the full size .40, the recoil seems to be lighter than a Glock 22.

"5) Is $499 the going price? The one I saw was at Gander Mountain here in TX."
That seems to be the going price. Some people have seen them drop to around the $450 range at some stores. It really depends on your area.

The Don Hume JIT Slide from a P239 is an excellent fit for the M&Pc. I have since made a few holsters for mine (9mm) but I think there will be plenty coming down the pipe.

$499 at GM was the going price. I found a dealer about 2 hours from me selling them for $459 so Gander did a price match and I had a $10 off coupon so I paid $449.

Since that time my dealer of choice has them in stock at $459.

I'm pretty pleased with mine, lots of nice features and very comfortable to shoot. I ran it through a flawless 300 round session last week and didn't even feel it afterwards.
