Made one last powder run.

Can't hurt to get supplies in hand before price increases happen. Back when, it was how I spent my "spare" money. Really glad now I was able to do it then. I am still working through primers priced at $12.50 per K. Dreading the next time I have to resupply. On the otherhand some of my stuff was purchased before Clinton was in office. Maybe not a lifetime supply but dang close on some stuff. Happy I invested in boxes of Winchester Silver Tip 30-30 bullets and those bronze tip 30 cals that shot so good in the 30-06 now that they both are discontinued.

Very wise,

I’ve been living off the idea of “buy SOMETHING every payday” when it’s there. I have enough reloading supplies to last until my kids are old and gray. Same with pistol and shotgun ammo ( I don’t reload 9/40/45 or shotgun). My last order was a case of Fiocchi Defense ammo #0 buckshot for the 12 gauge.

Actually... did the same thing today.

Powder Valley announced last week that the prices were going up on the 15th... which they, indeed, did. An 8# of IMR4064 is nearly $450, now. The LGS had 8#ers of H4350 a few weeks ago, so I thought I would trot over there and see if there was any left... and there was. Grabbed one. Yes, it was the same price as PV's current price, plus sales tax, but no HazMat, and I have it... so... there.

I still need 8# of IMR4064, but it will just have to wait. I still have 3# of it, and I'm into the dregs of the H4350...

Before the last presidential election, I did some bulk orders to try to "stack em deep".

I was deeper on my two types of rifle powders than on pistol powders, and of course my rifle shooting dropped way off. At the current rate, my boy will inherit multiple jugs of each.

Medium Slow and Magnum Pistol powder usage dropped off a little but I am happy with my current stash.

My stockpile of fast powders for pistol (Titegroup & Promo) could have been better. I am down to partial jugs of each. I just ordered four 5# jugs of Lovex D-032. 3 will be for me and 1 for a friend. This is the same as SW Clean Shot. Delivered price was just under $30 / lb. Quickload says that the D-032 will be an almost one for one replacement for my Titegroup loads (charges will increase by ~0.1 gr and fill will be nearly the same). Although I liked Promo more for a few applications, I have had to do without before during the previous shortage. Switching to this powder should be easy peasy.

One my age can't have enough powder for a last run without building a hazmat warehouse... but I'm stocked up from the last month before the latest craze. Took a run at aa4064 and aa2015. Never loaded either but at 40 a pound and I could get them made it the best choice I had....

that’s a TON of powder!

2024 not the Year Of the Dragon but the year of the Powder!
Uh you will find there is a huge difference in the amount of powders between shooters. Pistol guys run a lot of rounds but rifle competitors run a lot of volume. A new prs shooter getting his load developed and practicing go through a lot. 45 plus grains a trigger pull adds up fast. I can't immage people competing long range with a 300wm.

Definitely agree. When I first started working up loads for .375 H&H, I went through a whole bunch of H4350 in a hurry. That big case takes 80+ grains of H4350 with the 270gr Speers.

I definitely wouldn't consider myself a high volume pistol shooter, but I could see how someone shooting 100+ rounds every session, with weekly range sessions would eat up powder in a big hurry as well.

I’m shooting 2x a week (FINALLY) I might be in the jug level soon

Yes, yes, I know... uphill, both ways, in the snow... ;) Young whippersnapper...

Truth be told, I'm 7 years older than dad made it, so every day is a Blessing...
Good attitude! That’s the ticket!
Forget stocking up on powder, go buy a gross of popcorn. It’s good for you (whole grain) and just sitting back munching popcorn every once in a while works wonders for your disposition. 😁

This ^^^ right here. I get about 250 rounds out of a lb of powder in .223, vs almost 1500 rounds per pound in 45acp. So I need nearly six lbs of rifle powder to make the same amount of ammo as a single lb of pistol powder.

So it starts to make sense to buy a few 8#'s at a time if you shoot a lot of rifle.

And then there's the primers.....

Upstairs, buried in my paperwork somewhere, is a chart I made up on what I need to shoot. That is... what does it take to load, say, 1000 rounds of .41MAG? Certainly 1000 primers. 8000grn of Unique... just over 1#, OR 3# of W296! And then there's the bullets, of course.

It occurred to me that it didn't make any sense, for example, to have 5000 55grn .224" bullets... and 1# of H335. That revelation is what drove me to start buying 8# jugs instead of 1#ers... and to better evaluate my inventory of primers and brass.
