So I was at the mall today with the wife and kid trying to get some pictures taken of our daughter. We were a bit early so we started walking around and I noticed they opened a Dicks Sporting Goods. Decided to stroll on in and to my very pleasant surprise they sell guns there. This is the first time I have ever seen guns sold inside a major metropolitan mall.

Anyones else have a mall that sells guns?

spectrum mall in phoenix has a big 5. until recently the wal*mart in that mall also sold guns.

i remember a time when sears and j.c. penny's sold guns. every mall had guns.

Before my time, there was a gun store in the Asheville Mall. A buddy of mine was telling me about an FNC he got at the mall a long time ago, I thought he was joking.

I sense there is a change taking place in the psyche of the people. With things getting worse (financially, politically) people are beginning to understand that they are having to assume some responsibility for their own welfare. I think Dick's & some of the other stores are picking up on that. It only makes sense for them. If it helps their bottom line, without a great deal of risk, they will do it.

We have Dicks and Walmart- but WM only sells a few long guns now, Dicks sells pistols and long guns.

Curiosity question: After buying a gun, do you get to walk through the mall with your purchase, same as if you bought running shoes or golf balls, or do they escort you to an outer door to exit?

I bought a gun at a JC Penney's in a mall in Florida...a very nice Browning BL-22 lever action .22LR. Got it for $75.00, in 1973. My wife loves it, as it fits her just right.

Remember when I was in college at UofI in Iowa city in the 70's they had a real gun store in the Mall. Havn't been back for quite a while.
I remember the Wards in Iowa City and Dubuque Iowa mall carried rifles and pistols to back then.
Of course I had no money back then.

Actually, I think it's simple economics. If a big anchor store like Macy's or Sears moves out (or the mall owners can't interest them in opening up a store), that large space has to be filled by someone. WalMart, Dick's, etc. are currently money makers and would likely draw lots of customers. I doubt that anything else is really a factor...

This may be a little off the topic but in the mid 70's when I was in high school we had a rifle team there sponsored by the ROTC. I would take my personal 22 target rifle back and forth from home. It was not unusual for me to have it slung over my shoulder walking down the halls to my locker where I stored it along with a couple bricks of ammo. Also when hunting season came several of us would bring firearms to school and leave them in the office so that they would not be stolen while in class and after school go hinting in the fields less than 1/4 mile from school. Try to have a toy firearm or knife in school now and see what happens!!!

Our mall has a Dick's SG. Long Guns only, they use their own rules for checking 2 forms of ID (stricter than the State), and the manager will escort your purchase from the gun desk to the check-out counter and out the door to the parking lot. If you parked on the other side of the mall, they'll hold it for you while you pull around.

We have a Bass Pro Shop in a mall in the Atlanta Area. Granted I don't buy anything there, because a)past experiences with the store and b) they don't sell many (if at all) milsurps and antiques. I have enough tools, I'm into buying toys now.

If memory serves me right, Savannah GA and Destin FL also have BPS in/ or connected to malls. A lot of the Dicks SGs are also connected to malls in the Atl area.
