A Long Beach couple claims the husband accidentally shot himself while playing with a gun.
Investigators, however, believe the wife shot him.
"If the gun went off one time, that could be explained," said Police Lt. Don Bass. "Four times is questionable. It leads to suspicions."
That's why police arrested Julia M. Robinson, 23, on an aggravated domestic assault charge after the shooting Saturday around 9:15 p.m., Bass said.
Nathan Robinson, 29, remained hospitalized Monday in stable condition.
Authorities said a neighbor on Oakview Avenue called police about a domestic dispute. When officers arrived, the husband was lying in the street, suffering from two gunshot wounds, police said.
"The husband and the wife both contend he shot himself," Bass said.
The wife posted a $25,000 bail Sunday at the Harrison County jail.
Aggravated domestic assault is a felony. The penalty is up to a year in jail or up to 20 years in prison.
Bass said a preliminary investigation shows four shots were fired and the husband was struck once in the biceps of his right arm and once in his left hand.
According to Bass, the husband is right-handed.
Maybe he uses his left hand when he plays with himself, I mean with his gun.
