FARIBAULT, Minn. - A trip to the restroom resulted in a trip to the hospital for a Bloomington man who accidentally shot himself in the hand over the weekend at a gun show.

Faribault Police Sgt. Richard Larson said the 59-year-old man shot himself while removing his gun from a hook in a bathroom stall while attending the 31st annual Faribault Rifle and Pistol Club gun show on Sunday morning.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released by Sunday afternoon.

The gun show was at the National Guard Armory on Saturday and Sunday.

At the gun shows here they put a zip tie through the action or barrel to show it's unloaded.
If you get caught with a gun that doesn't have the zip tie in place you get shown the door.

Was there Sat. morning. This is a small NG Armory, that has small cramped restroom. No speculation as to the "why", but there was staff checking guns before entry into the floor with the tables.

This isn't an unheard of thing.
At Gunsite, they have dowel rods on the wall for you to put your handgun on, by the muzzle, while you are using the facilities (the dowel goes down the barrel: they have two, one for .45 and one for 9mm). They implied that there was a reason behind it.
In a perfect world I envision every public bathroom being equipped with such a set up by federal law. They have a handicapped stall by law and somewhere to safely put your gun while your pants are down by federal law in my perfect world.

Well I went to a gun show near me Saturday. I can't tell you how uncomfortable I was. I was constantly being swept with muzzles.

I would guess he wanted to carry loaded, so he went in with the gun empty, loaded it in the stall, sat down, and then goofed it.

why carry piped in the stall? for pete's sake, just lay it on the floor! if someone is going to attack you in the stall (and what a low life that must be) you have plenty of time to rack and fire. or even if you do carry piped, lay it down anyway.

For those that live in non CCW states. Here is the situation:
You carry a fully locked and loaded handgun 24/7/365.
When you use the bathroom, having a handgun in a holster on your pants makes pulling up your pants a pain. Try it if you don't believe me. It isn't unusual to remove your handgun from your holster and lay it down on the sink or somewhere until you are ready to leave.
Who knows what happened to this guy, but one guess would be that he dropped his handgun, tried to catch it and accidently stuck his finger inside the trigger guard while it was falling. This wouldn't be out of the question. If you carry IWB, it isn't unusual to have your holster turn upside down when you are pulling up your pants. This is a good reason to remove the handgun from the holster prior to downloading.

Yes, its a pain to pull your pants up and fasten the belt with a holstered gun. Its probably worth it though, so you dont forget your gun in the restroom.

Another solution I read was to drop it in your underwear while your pants are down so you cant forget about it. You still have the issue of fastening your pants and belt with a gun on the belt. I have put it on the TP holder or tucked it under my arm while fastening the belt. I keep my eye on it the whole time its not touching my body, so it cant be left behind. Stranger things have happened.

As above, I suspect it was dropped. He tried to catch it with both hands. One ended up on the business end and the other on the trigger.

That said, if he'd have unloaded the gun as he should have, it wouldn't have been an issue

Unfortunately, this is probably one of the guys that thinks he's smarter than everyone else. Just proved himself wrong.

If I'm carrying holstered it is IWB so when, in the rare instances that I need to drop trou in a public toilet, I just loosen the belt and then grab and use the gun and holster to lower my pants. Making sure it doesn't spill out upside down. Then I just fold it inwards at the bottom keeping it in the holster. Same thing when reversing the procedure, I make sure I have control of the gun before pulling up. In my house I take it out and lay it on the vanity first. I usually carry an airweight .32 in my pocket which is not a problem taking down but you do have to make sure it's not twisted up in there before pulling up.

I woulda never thought I'd be discussing such a topic on a public forum but hey, if it prevents someone from shooting themselves I guess I can handle it.

Yes I do, because I am just absent minded enough to leave it somewhere if I don't.

Yes, it is a pain in the a** pulling pants up. Like everything else about carrying, it requires a differient level of skills and awareness, but it is possible. A good holster also helps. You can't buy a $10.00 Uncle Mikes IWB and expect it to stay attached. (I've always ondered why people will spend $500 - $1,000 for a weapon and cheap out on the holster.)

having a handgun in a holster on your pants makes pulling up your pants a pain.

I would get a holster that has better retention and stays put on your belt. Both my S&W 357 and Sig 230 retain quite well especially when upside down. Only once when I had the model 60 in the holster for the 357 it dropped out into the toilet because it is slightly smaller than the 357. I don’t carry it anymore unless I can get one to fit it.
