I'd really hate to shoot a dog.

Dog allegedly used as weapon in heist
Man robbed on Oshawa street, police say
By Toronto Sun Staff

Durham Regional Police are looking for two young bandits who allegedly used a dog to rob a man on an Oshawa street.

Cops said a 56-year-old man went to the A&P store at the Rossland Square Plaza on Rossland Rd. at 5 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10.

When the man left the plaza, two males followed him north on Wilson Rd. to about halfway between Rossland and Beatrice St. E.

One of the males suddenly tackled the man, threw him to the ground, and threatened him. The other male, holding his dog back, then threatened to have the dog attack if the man didn’t hand over his cash.

The victim complied, and the two robbers fled with the dog.

Police said both suspects were both white, 5-foot-4 and between 17 and 23 years old. The breed of the dog was unknown.

Interesting robbery method. Can't see why it wouldn't work on an unarmed victim. Since this is a gun forum I assume the logical comment is that if the victim was armed this incident could have turned out differently. Perhaps shooting the owner would be a more appropriate but less socially acceptable answer to this type of thing.

Dog Ban

Okay, I know, I've already done one of these today.

But dogs are dangerous.

Why does anyone need an "attack" dog?

It's not like you need one to hunt ducks.

For the children, you know.

In a more sober vein . . .

Assuming situational awareness, the man grasps that he's being followed.

Assuming he is carrying, and decides that the "youths" have gotten as close as he will allow, he confronts them, has his hand on pistol. Possibly exposes it to get his point across.

For this to get any farther, we have to assume that the youths don't turn and leave, and decide to call his bluff -- using the dog.

What now?

Not many people practice shooting dog-sized targets head-on at close range.

The dog can do more damage in less time than the human perps.

If they "brandish" the dog, does he shoot?

If they loose the dog, he pretty much has to shoot. If so, does he also shoot the human perp(s)?

Anyone here have experience with defense against dog + man combinations?

would the dog be the equivalent of a "deadly weapon" ? I'd opt to shoot the dog and maybe the two fine upstanding"youths"who own him.

Haha. An attack dog has no sporting purpose! It's not like you can hunt ducks with it because there'd be nothing left of the duck by the time you got it back.

True. I'd assume the dog could cover the distance before you can draw and fire. I think instinctively I'd do this: If dog starts charging, start your draw with your strong side, rotating so that part of your body is away from the dog, put your weak side arm up, let the dog latch onto it (grit your teeth before hand if you like!) then stick the gun into the dog's ribcage and pull the trigger until it lets go, then focus your attention on the owners.

If they loose the dog, I would shoot it. Dog bites are not often fatal, but they can certainly rate "severe bodily injury". What I did next would depend on what the BGs did. If they turn and run I would let them go and call the police. If they stare, dumb-founded, at their dead dog I would keep them covered with the pistol. If they advance on me I would consider them threats.

Sorry but unless it is a saint bernard or some other huge beast aka grizzly bear no dog is as dangerous as an agressive human. Last Friday I went to a rural sawmill for some KD Cedar and at 1530hrs nobody was around. I got out of my truck and walked to the office looking trailer when I was greeted by a chocolate lab bitch who was friendly. I petted her, and started on to the office door which I found locked. I started walking back to my truck when a large male Rhodiesian Ridgeback came charging up barking and snarling. I extended my left hand palm down while securing a good grip on my pistol with the right hand behind my back. The dog slowed and snapped at the chocolate lab driving her off and then proceeded to take my hand in his mouth. Before he closed his jaws I had kicked him in the throat and he backed off and laid down staring at me in what looked like surprise. I kicked him so fast I didn't know I'd done it until it was over. I never pulled the .45 around to bring it to aim at the dog. I retreated to my truck and as I drove out I found a guy working on a tractor who filled my order. I told him about the dog encounter and he said last week the dog had bitten him on the butt pretty severely, about then the dog came out from between two sheds, took one look at us and did an about face and left. The guy working there laughed and told me he thought perhaps he would try kicking as it seemed to have worked very well for me.

I generally like animals, but anything that seems intent on - and capable of - possibly disfiguring me is a potential candidate for whatever I might dish out that is legal. Period.

I wouldn't be pleased as punch about it or anything, but I would do what I felt was needed. Good point on "is the dog being used as a deadly weapon?", I guess that's the question to answer in this situation.

Reminds me of something terrifying that's happening in Nigeria. Entrepreneurs in the unfettered capitalist sector of the economy have decided that pit bulls are just too wimpy. They're using hyenas and baboons as weapons for robbery and intimidation. Absolutely bat-guano crazy go-to-Code-Brown insanely frightening. If I were walking the streets of Lagos and saw that I'd shoot the hyena immediately and then shoot the owner on general principles.

Some breeds can be very strong, very fast, and have jaws like a steel trap. A old girlfriend of mine had a 60lb female pitbull and that thing can darn near tear your arm out of your socket just playing with her pull toy and liked breaking sizable branches with her jaws.

This thread has way too high a noise to signal ratio for this subforum.

Be advised that we have serious discussions here. Leave the pithy comments in GD and L&P.
