When we first started dating, I was a little nervous about telling her about my firearms hobby. During a conversation, the subject came up, and when I told her I was a shooter, she was cool with it. Later, she admitted she had an SKS (a russian!) and a SS Jennings .22 that she liked to go out plinking with a couple of times a year.
She took me out shooting (I'd never shot an SKS) and I fell in love with her rifle and had to buy one myself. Sweet little gun!
I won't let her shoot the Jennings, and I gave her my first bolt action .22. We love to plink, and when an opportunity arises, we'll go out for several hours. A year ago I gave her a Ruger Mk 1, and she loves it. For Christmas last year, she got a Ruger .40 (P90). She's a better shot than me with everything we shoot, and I don't mind that one bit. She's a true backup, and it's great to have one! I could never go back to being with a woman that didn't shoot.
For Christmas this year, she got us Frontsite's Defensive Handgun Course. We'll be taking it this Summer, and then we'll attempt to get our CCWs here in California. She chose the Springfield .45 for the course gun, but didn't want to look like a noob when we go, so she picked up her first .45 last week. She's shot my 1991A1 and, of course, is better than I am with it.
Last Sunday we attended our first IPSC match, as spectators. She's WAY excited about it! Our first time to actually shoot is next month. She likes how the competition is more 'realistic' than just shooting tin cans and targets.
The only thing she isn't proficient at is FTF/FTE/FTF, and field stripping. She's learning though, and she isn't afraid to get dirty.
...she counts rounds in movies now, and gets disgusted with the director when a particular firearm fires more than it should without a reload...
I'm so proud! And damn lucky!
