so after all these years in shotshell loaders looks like they are expanding into metallic cartridge reloading with a new cast iron press looks to be built heavy!! :)

It's hard to believe a company would think it a worthwhile investment to build a single stage press when there are SO MANY option already out there. It offers nothing new or necessary.

I wonder if they looked at sales of shotshell reloaders, saw them falling; looked at sales of metallic reloading gear, saw it rising; and decided they had to get into the metallic game or die.

Because otherwise it's a puzzling decision.

They likely noticed how much Hornady was asking for their new single stage.

If Hornady can sell a $268 single stage surly MEC can sell a $225 one.

Hmm... Hornady spends boatloads on marketing their ammunition. So people new to reloading come in with favorable perceptions of Hornady generally (halo effect), and they probably get a bit of a premium on their reloading gear because of it. Other than current shotshell reloaders who are looking for a single stage press, who are the buyers with a built-in favorable view of MEC? (Genuine question... I have no idea who they are, but maybe I'm in the minority.)

I don't know, if they paid me I would find a demographic to advertise too though. I would likely start with warranty registration on thier shotshell presses for direct mail advertising.

Kind of like the best people to sell another Dillon to is someone that knows how good they are. Or someone looking for a press on a tight budget knows to get a Lee. You don't see Forster doing a lot of advertising, they get their sales by owners praising the press, word of mouth.

The good news, down the road, is that MEC makes good products and for whatever reason they don't seem to hold their value well at all. So you can get a $200+ reloading press for $75 or less in some cases. $75 is the most I have paid for any of my used MEC loaders.

I agree with you though, not the best market to jump into being a regular ol single stage called the "Marksmen". I would have added press mounted LED's that can change color to suit the owner, a few different handle options with at least one that rotates, a mount that puts it higher off the bench than is comfortable to operate normally, some threaded holes to thread different stuff into and called it the "Black widow super zombie slayer plant" and watch the money roll in...

LOL! Yeah, they should hire you to write their ad copy. "Here's a new single stage. It doesn't really do anything new, but at least its resale value will be jack squat if you decide to sell it."

It looks like a monster and I'm sure it will gain a following. That following probably won't come from those if us who already own a good single stage press like my Rockchucker but it will probably sell.

Dave, I have been told I would make a horrible used car salesman, not sure if they were trying to complement me but that's how I received it.

Mec has a history of bringing out new stuff, then abandoning it after a couple of years. Case in point their steel shot reloading set-up, wads, limited data. All gone now. It worked, BUT there was many other companies selling steel shot and plenty of data. So mec no longer supports loading steel except to offer steel shot bars for the various loaders.

The new MEC metallic loader looks real strong though, it's design is really a "C" press, with two side supports that should limit the dreaded "C" press deflection under heavy load, like sizing.

Beefy press with a lot of room. That's a plus! Midway has them for $179. Waiting to see if they build a turret or progressive, that will tell me how serious they are about expanding into the metallic cartridge reloading business!

It looks interesting. I've already got an RCBS Supreme which serves my single-stage needs just fine, but if I was a new reloader or was looking to upgrade from an aluminium starter press, I'd probably give this one a serious look.

But yea - a progressive would be more interesting. Most people typically don't keep lots of single stages because with those you're constantly changing stuff anyways. Many people keep multiple progressives setup for different cartridges so that they don't have to adjust the unit every time they want to load a different type.

In a world where you can buy a Rockchucker for $129.00 new, I don't get this. I run a reloading club, we have 18 different presses and the Rockchucker and the Forster pretty much have it covered in single stage, one traditional stalwart, one very innovative and not cheap but super fun to use.
No product differentiation, nothing innovative, interesting or unique on this MEC, why? Call me puzzled.

well what I liked about it over my rockchucker is its open front area has more room to get to the cartridges than my rcbs so with my big hands it looked like it had more clearance overall!

Some own more than one just because of that fact, I know people that own the cheap Lee C press and only use it with a universal decap die, just so they don't have to mess with anything.

There are also a number of "quick change" options these days. Hornady and RCBS can be had with "QD bushings", the Lee breech lock and my favorite the co-ax.

Also a little odd that MEC didn't go for its own version of QD too.
