Just sold my AR15 because it wasn't getting any love at the range and now I'm wondering if I should get something in .45 to help me get over my loss. This is going to be strictly a range gun, as I have my home defense and ccw covered with a system I am very comfortable and proficient with.

Recently picked up a sig P226 and really like it, so the sig P220 is an option. I'm also a glock man primarily, and wouldn't mind having a G21. Then there is the 1911 dilemma... I have a buddy who is selling his Kimber custom II for a reasonable price. I've always been intrigued by 1911s, but haven't ever had one at the top of my list. This is a genre I don't know much about, so maybe there is something that would be a better buy for around the same price?

What do you guys think? I'm open to other suggestions, but keep it under $800 please

I would try your friends Kimber, if it works as it should I would make an offer. Had up to 7 SIGs, 4 as of now, 7 1911s including a SIG, for now, more in the future. STI, Springfield, SIG and S&W all make good 1911s below $1000, you will not believe how a good 1911 in 9mm shoots.

Be careful with 1911's as they are way addictive, and tend to multiply. I started off with one to see what all the fuss was about, and now I have 3, one government model (5"), a 4" mid size, and my latest a Colt Officers model (3.5").
Good luck either way you go!

$800, you don't want a 1911. By next month you'll be selling your furniture to fund the next one, then you start eyeing your truck, then a second mortgage...

Honestly the Sig would make an easy transition, the Kimber might be a good buy if reasonably priced and functioning correctly or you may want to investigate the 1911 in general to decide if it's right for you before parting with that AR windfall.

well if I went with a gun from your list I would probably get your buddies kimber if I wanted a perty gun. if you went with a different 1911 I'd recommend Rugers SR1911, it's kind of perty too. for polymer pistols have you considered the XDM45 from springfield?

If you haven't ever owned a 1911 get one. Many to choose from, it's a great platform. 100 years old and still a top seller.

I see what everyone is saying! Most guys don't just buy one 1911, I believe that. There doesn't have to be any rhyme or reason, just like me owning too many glocks.

I guess I'm very overwhelmed by the whole 1911 genre. So many guns that appear to be identical to the untrained eye. We all know they are all completely different! Buying sigs, glocks, hks, etc is easy, just pick a caliber and a size and you're good too go. With a 1911 there are about 1,000 variables to consider. I've wanted to join the club... But I have no clue how to haha

Sounds like the P220 would be a great choice since you already like the P226. IMO the P220 is about as good as it gets for a non 1911 .45. I have a P220 and SIG GSR 1911 and it would be hard to choose between the two as they both have been 100 percent reliable and astoundingly accurate.

You *really* need to have a look at the CZ 97b.

I had a Sig 220, couldn't warm up to it. Hard DA pull, decocker in an awkward place, high bore axis, limited ammo capacity, too thin.

Sold it to get a Glock 21SF but the grip angle is too weird for me in competition and it's a bit wide. It's up for sale too.

If the 97b didn't exist, I'd probably have a closer look at a 1911, but would need wider grips.

See now I love my P220, great trigger, decocker in a great place (I'm used to sigs), and the grips are just the right size for my hand.

I went with the P220, but its a wash between that and a non-kimber 1911. Both Sigs and 1911's, in my opinion, are addictive as heck!

I think you'd enjoy a 1911 more than a GLOCK 21 or SIG P220. I have five P220s so I'm definitely a fan of the platform, but a 1911 would be sufficiently different and interesting, and most likely very accurate for range use. If the Kimber is a good price, and if you like the way it shoots, and if it works well I suggest that you buy it. I have two Kimbers along with some other high-end production and semi-custom 1911s. The Kimbers have proven to be excellent despite all of the negative comments I've read on this forum. You would have the advantage of being able to try out the Kimber before buying so there would be less of a 'luck' factor, which is alive and well in the sub $2,000 1911 market if my experience with more than a few 1911s is anything to go by.

Dare to be different. It's not 1/2 as bad as the crowd says it is.

* EAA Witness
* CZ97
* S&W 99 (can find VG condition police trade-in SUPER cheap)
* S&W 45XX (excellent deals on used market)
* S&W 1917 & 22 revolvers
* S&W 325 series revolvers
* Beretta Px4
* Ruger P90
* Ruger P345
* H&K USP
* ATI 'Zigana'
* Bersa Thunder 45
* FNP 45
* Kahr P45
* XD 45

ect.

1911's are cool and all ... but there are just PILES of neat, reliable, 45acp handguns out there for you not to consider your options. There is everything from pistol to revolver, alloy to polymer, and cheap to expensive in that list. Surely there is something other than a 1911 that can trip your trigger.

Daytodaze: Let us know how or what you decide on. Too often a poster asks for opinions and we never know what they choose. And remember it never happened without pictures!

Will definitely let you guys know, and definitely appreciate the advice! Not to throw a wrench into the gears... but would it be blasphemous to add a full-sized HK USP .45 to the mix?

Actually just saw that was one of Maple's suggestions. I've never fired any HK, but generally speaking I'm confident in most things German haha
