I don't know if this has been done before but all you folks out there who are in the military or former members please write down these things...

1. Rank
2. Branch of the military
3. years served. (and maybe any wars you may have fought in)
4. firearm/firearms you were issued and what your personal opinion of the weapon was/is now.

I am doing this just to get a look at how many members of THR are military/gun enthusiast.

p.s. lets not get into any debates about m14 vs ar 15 or m1 garand vs whatever, I just want your personal opinion of your weapon at the time you served, and how your opinion may have changed over the years, or if you are current military what you think of your weapon.

p.s.s. I want to thank you all for serving this great country, and may God bless you.

1. E-4 (SPC)
2. Army (MN ARNG)
3. Coming up on four years, no deployments. First one will be right at the end of my enlistment.
4. M16A4, M4, currently M249.

I think the SAW is just as much my enemy as the Taliban are. If I do not keep the evil one well lubed with CLP (And often, sometimes even if I do), it will stab me in the back and refuse to function properly. So far we have an uneasy truce.

2. Army, Retired
3. 24 years 6 months. Vietnam 66 months
4. Weapons issued: 03, M1 Garand, M1/M2 Carbine, M3, M14, AR15, M16, M79, M203, S&W 38, 1911 Weapons qualified on: Browning 1917 & 1919, M2 .50 cal, M60, M72, General Electric M134 Mini gun aircraft mounted.

As any mechanical thing, the weapon is subject to failure if misused or if not properly maintained. The weapons of the past met their designed function as do the weapons of today. America has the best equipped military in the world.

Navy. Still doing it.
12 Years, more than three years combined Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo.
Pretty much everything. Carried predominantly M-14 and M-16. M-9 of course. Love the M-9. Love the M-14. HATE that I can't carry M-14 anymore.

Sincere thanks for all your services.
As well as for those not posted and to be posted.

M16A2 (I liked it, but had little to compare it too) M203 (Boom!!!) and I carried the 60 for a month in MCT/SOI. After that I got more of an admin position, so I didn't have a personal weapon except for qualifications.

4 years active during VietNam
12 years drilling reserve after VietNam
No weapons issued but carried something when on watch. A carbine or sidearm depending on duty station. I have no idea what they were. Was not an enthusiast back then. Shot a service .45 once a year for quals and that was it.

1) O-4
2) USN
3) 12 years
4) Beretta 9mm for combat flight ops. Nice firearm -- I liked it a lot.
On TDY, I used M14 and M16A3. The M14 was my favorite firearm by far. The M16A3 was pretty good and fairly reliable with no real gripes about its performance.

4. Weapons used:

M2 carbine -- standard for advisers, and not worth carrying
Colt M357 -- privately owned and used twice
M1 Garand -- bummed off the ARVN after the carbine got wrapped around a tree. Used three times.
M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle (ripped out of the hands of an ARVN and used.)
M16 Rifle while on brigade staff
M1911 .45 pistol (standard for Company commanders, never fired in anger)
M14 sniper rifle (pre-M21, the company had two and I kept one. Used 3 times.)
M2 Browning HB .50 machine gun (standard for M113 personnel carriers and very effective. Used on several occasions.)

1. SSgt
2. USAF Active Duty
3. 8 & counting, never deployed to a forward location
4. M16, M4, M9, and M500 (my primary duty weapon)
The M4 is my favorite. I wish it was my primary weapon.

Red Team 98 FOB Falcon
Iraq, Sadui Arabia, Korea, Alaska, Fort Carson, Fort Lewis WA, Fort Hood TX, Washington DC

Favorite Weapon AK 47 and M240B.

Hope the M4 Upper get replaced with Piston operated Uppers in 6.8 SPC.

Get rid of cheap M4 9mm Pistol go back to the steel frame 45 ACP......... the 9mm required to many hits to be effective. Good mag capacity the only good thing.

Best rounds in use the 7.62 in 308 Win and 50 cal......

We need to exit Afgan. ASAP cannot win this war!

m-14, heavy but reliable as hell, M-1/2 Carbines light and handy for social work, M-16 pos, M-21 gold standard, 1911 "comforting", m-79 effective, M-203 better than a 79, M-60 heaviest darling I ever humped, M-9 satisfactory,....and a few others used as well.

1. GMGSN, (E-3)
2. US Navy, active reserves
3. 86-89 active, Operation Preying Mantis, Persian Gulf '88, (one day war with Iran)
4. Conducted shipboard security with M-14, (LOVE that rifle!), Remington 870/Mossberg 500 standard riot guns, 1911A1 45ACP pistols. No Marines on board, so we got to train with the small arms a lot - watched one guy shoot "down" a flying fish while doing shotgun familiarization on the flight deck.
M-14 was also the best for line throwing, was on an ammunition ship - what do they use now?

1. E-5 (technically promotable, in the nonesensical way the guard does this.)
2. Army/National Guard (The line is a bit blurry these days.)
3. Something like six years total, I have to pull out my slide rule and get a second opinion every time I try to sore out the difference between active time and guard time. I have a ND ribbon for the first gulf war, because I hit Germany before the conflict was officially 'ended'. I have not yet deployed with my current unit, the nature of the unit and mission requires that I keep the details out of the main channels in here. I will say that in the last year I've been to Paris and Benin TDY.
4. I like my M-4/M-16 just fine. I was an assistant armorer, and we had a LOT of problems with our brand new M-9s, mostly from soldiers taking them apart and playing with them. There's no such thing as a foolproof system, it's a question of finding a sufficiently talented fool. I qualified expert on M-2, M-60, M-240, M-203, M-16, M-9, M-1, M-1A1, AT-4, M1911, and M-249. We had M-3s in our weapons locker, they were on the MTOE for our recovery vehicle crewmen, but no one knew if they had been fired in 20 years, and I never got the chance. My current unit just got M-11s, and I am trying to talk my S-3 into sending me to Thunder Ranch with one to become the unit's designated pistol instructor. I'll let you know how it turns out.

This year, in between hanging out with a marine rifle company and the 19th group, I shot the M-40A3, M-82, M-110, and MP-5SD.

O-1 (former E-5, Firecontrolman, Tomahawk type.) USN
Still active, coming up on 8 years. Deployed to Gulf and Mediterranean areas on a DDG.
Beretta, Mossberg, M-14, M4. I liked 'em all. I loved the rifles.

Dunno, that's what they were using in 2006. I got nailed in the butt with one of those red line balls during an UnRep, in my line handling days. Felt like a hard kick from a steeltoed boot.

I think they still use the M14 for this, at least they did when I was in. I believe all shipboard armories still carry the M14, but I could be wrong. In any case, if they do still carry them, that would be a good thing...

I know things have changed in the 21 years since I have served this great country of ours but I would do it all over again if given the chance.

Issued the SAW in 03 and a M16 DMR in 05. The early SAWs had some problems, mine didnt, but the new ones with the short barrel and solid gas block seemed more reliable.

My DMR was an awesome weapon. With the 77grn rounds it was dead on accurate nd even did pretty well with the standard green tip ball.

I was also designated as a humvee gunner so had a lot of experience with the M2 and the M240. The M2 was a beast of a gun but I actually preferred the M240 on my truck. It was much easier to put accurate fire where I needed it.

Also was a back up Bradley gunner for when they went on leave. Never shot it in combat but was glad we had in 03 when those pesky Iraqi armored vehicles would show up.
