The SA is a standard sized gun, just chopped. The STI is VERY intersting though.

The 9mm Springfield Ultra Compact is also just a chopped standard 1911. If you look at the STI you'll note that it takes advantage of the smaller cartridge to use a slimmer slide & frame.
Anyhow, I've often thought that with modern metallurgy, a Star/Colt .380-size nine millimeter would be eminently doable. I just wonder if anybody would buy one, though...

The reason I brought this up is because I was looking at my Dad's .380 the other day. It's a Llama 1911 stlye, but about half the size of the standard 1911, maybe even smaller. And it's not just chopped down, it's thinner too.
So I was thinking that thats a great idea, but .380 is a bit on the small side. So it got me to thinking that something similar but slightly larger in 9mm or .40 S&W would be really cool...

I have been trying to convince Bob Serva of Dan Wesson to bring out a 3/4 scale 1911 specifically made for the 9mm round. Just a tad bigger then the colt gov 380 but 1911 format to the core. I think it would be just about perfect and would give them a whole unique product line. The problem is as Tamara put it, would anyone else buy one......

Yeah, I got a Colt Mustang in .380 that is very similar to the series 80 1911. Biggest difference is the lack of a grip safety but other than that, the rest of the controls are all the same. Great little gun.

I'd sure buy one! You wouldn't see me hesitate a minute to be the guinea pig for a new design like that.
Like the rest here, I've often wondered why the majority of 9mm 1911's are nothing more than a big, hulking .45acp 1911 with a smaller boresize. I realize there's a lot of money saved by just drilling a smaller hole down the barrel, but come on, does it really make sense from a user's standpoint?
Similarly, the Bersa Thunder .380 seems a bit big for such a small round. I was shooting a friend's the other day and really got into the design and ergonomics. I just wish there was one in 9mm Luger so I could share ammo with my BHP.
The STI LS9 looks very promising. A bit expensive, but still better than anything else out there.
I'll definitely buy when there are more choices. Maybe I'll buy two or three so I can change out regularly.
Someone needs to make a 7/8ths scale 1911 in 9mm luger. Please!
