Minnesota couple pleads guilty to straw purchasing 97 guns

To date, law enforcement officers have recovered 17 of the straw purchased guns, either at crime scenes or in the possession of people who are prohibited from having firearms, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

I suppose it wasn't hard to figure out.

It looks like a bulk of the 97 guns straw purchased were during the mostly peaceful protests.

gotta make example of the criminals.
Sadly it’s not a great example, one charge out of five with 97 violations of law.

These are the very clowns that help give us law abiding gun owners a bad name. 5 years in the fed pen and a $250,000 fine for each of them may let some folks know there’s a piper to pay when illegally buying guns for criminals or those unfit to own them. But in Minn, like Ore and Ca, I doubt we’ll see it. :(

Like today’s story about the thrice-arrested Portland antifa idiot who was pointing laser pointers in the eyes of the federal police during 3 separate riots. Did a whole 30 days of pre-trial “community service” and the US attorney handling the cases dismissed the charges without convictions. :fire:

No accountability = no deterrence. Been that way since the dawn of man.

Stay safe.

So true , so true.

Admittedly off topic , but a case in point : You’ve all heard of the Waukesha Wi Christmas parade massacre in which a very bad man deliberately ran down numerous innocent people with his suv , killing 8(?) including several children, and sending many more to the hospital ….
Well , that fellow had previously attempted to shoot his nephew and tried to run over his girlfriend. Missed both times.
He was out on bail ———$1000.
1000 measly dollars. Didn’t even impound the suv.
No deterrent.

The lowlifes who committed 97 straw purchases, no deterrent.

On top of all that , law enforcement has revered 17 of the 97 illegally purchased firearms, 80 to go. I wonder what the cost of all that investigation will total up to?

What I DON’T wonder is who’s gonna foot that bill - we THRoaders along with the rest of the tax paying law abiding public will get stuck with it , not the bottom feeding perps.

Makes me want to puke.

A lot of dumb stuff coming out of MN these days. And I say that as a former, 35 year resident of that state. I don't even say I lived in MN anymore, if it comes up. It's embarrassing these days. I just say I lived "up north".

It is amazing to me ... Minnesota used to be an absolutely great American state, Land of 10,000 lakes, great bass fishing, hunting, salt of the earth people. Very little crime and what crime there was was in and around the Twin Cities.

Then they made that darn movie about Fargo up there and it's been all downhill since.

I used to love that place.

Federal case.

I still do love it, in the summer and outside of the Twin Cities. Look at the statewide voting map sometime. Almost the entire state goes Republican, except the big cities. But that's enough to win the elections since there are more cityots than rural folks.

In a plea deal, gun charges are the first ones dropped because there are mandatory guidelines. So, they would simply drop more charges.

97 violations should be 97 charges

Like that old song.... "from the highest tree...."

Many jurisdictions in both state and federal court - very carefully don't prosecute firearms crimes the way they should... The first really bad example I can think of is Chicago (and I was a cop down here in south Florida during the height of the cocaine wars... nothing we experienced compares to the daily toll up in Chicago...).

Add to that the so called "bail reform" in cities controlled by just one political party... where anyone accused of a felony not only can walk out of jail, same day... but will have no trouble getting the names and addresses of anyone foolish enough to stand up as a witness....

The mistake they made is they dont have a place at the table. Seems like its perfectly fine to be a gun runner if you are someone on the inside. I am not saying they are good or bad people. As accurate as the news is these two could have just bought out a collection and were selling some off. what I am saying is that when you dip your hands into the whole...buying and selling /flipping for a profit of firearms......you are going to attract pele into your life that you probably wont want....draw attention from dangerous people both at the street level and in the courts. If your going to sell a whole bunch of guns and dont want to deal with a miidle man for transfers you probably be best getting a FFL.

sad to say but Legalities dont really matter all that much. Chances are there are lots of " legal" gun owners that lie on the 4473 every time they buy a firearm. You smoke dope for fun? You most likely lied on the 4473. Smoke it for mudicinal reasons.... better have a doctors note.

These people might be good folks but it wont matter. Gotta be smart when it comes to firearms. Kicking the hornets nest by trying some half assed gun running (or even 3d printing) is just asking for it.

Last time I looked, Fargo was in North Dakota. Moorhead is it's sister city across the border in MN. Plea bargaining is pretty much standard anymore when it comes to folks that commit multiple crimes. Folks plead guilty to some so others are dropped. Basically saves the time and expense of a lengthy trial for both parties as well as the uncertainty of what a jury will decide. More charges do not always mean more prison time. As for low bail....that has always surprised me, but most of it comes down to the Judges discretion as to how dangerous the criminal will be out on the streets and the possibility of flight.

Straw purchases of this kind are probably more prevalent than most think. Lying on the 4473 is a federal crime, but for the most part, folks are hardly if ever caught. Similar to folks that buy guns with the sole intent to resell for profit.

From Gifford's Law Center's website. Their conclusion is that corrupt retail gun dealers contribute more to illegally obtained guns than Straw Purchasers. For the most part, it is responsible gun dealers that give tips on those they suspect are making straw purchases. Girlfriends and family members of felons are probably the most common straw purchasers.

  • Data from a national survey of firearm licensees suggests that there are more than 30,000 attempted straw purchases each year.9
  • A representative survey found that more than two-thirds of dealers experienced at least one attempted straw purchase in the year preceding the survey.10
  • Researchers have also found that gun dealers are willing to make gun sales under conditions that suggest straw purchases.11
  • In one investigation, one in five gun sellers were willing to sell guns to people explicitly asking to buy firearms on behalf of someone else.12

But it is so sad that the woman lost her job and was living in a hotel. She had to make a living.:barf:

62 guns in one month! How the hell did she know 100 people that "needed" guns? Guess it's like selling drugs.

Her last sale was a multiple purchase so the shop would have had to file a "form"

Heck I read in the "news" every day around here, some felon is caught with drugs or theft and has a illegally acquired gun. Catch and release!

I lived outside Crystal many many years ago, you would think of as a crime area back then,

The Twin Cities is so messed up now!

Ummmmmmmm .... you obviously didn't see the movie or the TV series.

Yeah, both are titled "Fargo" but both have a lot of key moments that take place in Minnesota.

Also ... sense of humor. I was being tongue in cheek. I could have been more direct about what really sent Minneapolis and the Twin Cities into this spiral ... but it would have been political and I was really, (well, I actually did), trying to avoid that.

Most eveyone else got it. No harm was intended. Reality is what it is.

Happy New Years everyone!

At least its good and far from California. I cant drive to the quicky mart where I'm at without seeing a caravan of uHauls towing Subarus from California. Local conversations have gone from complaining about it to counting the amount of hours it takes for their houses to sell.

Several states are the same way.
True. Far too many, actually.

Here is a good example of cityiot think. This woman has her car jacked in her garage. Boyfriend gets beat up, kids see it all, and she says this:
She added that she thinks the high number of carjacking incidents in the area is a "symptom of some pretty serious problems" in Minneapolis and the city's "lack of support for these kids and for the impoverished."

I stand corrected. I did get the humor, just forgot the intimate details of the movie. Been 2 1/2 decades since I saw it. After the dust cleared in my head and I thought hard about it, I remembered wondering why they called it "Fargo". It was the Brainerd Mn Police Chief doing the investigation. The deep in debt Car dealership owner doing the defrauding and hiring the kidnappers of his wife was in Minneapolis and everyone talked like they were from Canada. It also was claimed the movie was based on real life events, but none of them actually happened in Minnesota. No wonder I'm confused!
