"Yes but they weren't Asian, they were Asisan"

Hey. nothing wrong with that. ain't that where St Francis the Talking Mule come from????

I've seen enough stupidity at ranges here to be glad that I don't go to them unless I have to...which is RARE.
I've got a nice piece of land staked out just outside of town. There is plenty of room and a nice solid backstop that is a couple miles thick (yes, its a mountain)
You can hear other shooters, but you'd actually have to go hiking to find them. The only complaint that I have is the amount of junk people leave out there.

My little story has to do with the last time I was at an indoor range. It was Good Friday 2 years ago and work gave us 3 hours off. Some used it to go pray or take a long lunch.
A few of us decided to go shooting.
We bring our guns in and pay for range time and targets.
The three of us are happily banging away in our lanes for an hour or so when we hear the telltale roar of a magnum round being touched off.

Cool thinks I as I hear it yet again. I finish my magazine off, leave the slide locked back and am about to walk over when the magnum sounds again and I hear a metalic clang...the target hanger was sitting on the floor of the range.
The owner walks out and the guy is very apologetic and offers to pay for damages. He was trying out a set of crimson trace grips and wasn't used to them (or thats the story he gave)
Anyway, the owner agrees and moves him down one lane...next to me.
The magnum bangs resume and sure enough, he aims high again and proceeds to place a .44 slug into the ceiling, showering the range with debris. Instead of stopping again and reevaluating, he fires again...this time with one hand.
The owner has had enough and asks the man to leave. Luckily, I had stepped away from my lane and I see him turn and sweep the booth I had just been in. :cuss: The walls on these things aren't thick at all and my co-workers were in the lanes right next to me. Lucky thing the guy didn't ND or they could have been in some serious s**t.

The owner, being an avid shooter himself apologized to the three of us for the danger. I couldn't really be mad as you can't always tell stupidity by looking at the person. You'd figure a man who owns a nice S&W 44 mag would be at least as bright as the lamps in the range. Guess not. Anyway, I now drop in there from time to time to check out new stock. They do a fair business although the prices are a little on the high side. Good folks all around and pretty knowledgable about their trade.

I don't like shooting around other people any more than I have to anymore. If I endanger myself, thats one thing.
If somebody else does it, its quite another.

As soon as I saw Asian, or the other spelling I knew it would become the main topic in this thread.

I feel sorry for all of you who must use public ranges. It makes me proud to be living in an undeveloped state. Best to you all!

moron at range

several years ago i saw a similiar thing happen.a buddy of mine loaded some hot 8mil rounds for his k98 mauser.when he touched it off all hell broke loose.the receiver was peeled open like a tin can.the bolt took off a part of his ear.never saw anything so stupid in my life.shoot safe be safe postmaster

Lets all stay on topic.

I like that my range has a very very strict rifle/pistol handling policy (and DOES enforce), but still prefer to only shoot on members-only nights for obvious reasons.

This is why i simply dont go shooting in the afternoon anymore. My preffered time is right when the doors open (around 9AM) on a weekday. its rare that i have many people at all shooting around me, and those that do show up tend to be pretty competant for some reason. Sunday afternoon? *shudder* I actually get downright scared.

Fortunatly the antis dont know enough about gun safety to realize how bad things can get at public ranges.

i vote we take off safety labels and warnings on every household product. in 2 years, stupid people will become extinct  :D

our rifle range isnt only actions open, its bolts out between volley's. i dont think your allowed to be touching your firearm at all if the range isnt called hot

Update

Well, this weekend at the other local range, someone shot and killed himself with a rented AK. And, he wasn't asisan or Asian. See, this is the reason why I don't like public ranges--the safety issue.

Given the fact that I'm black (or African American if you like), why would I post offensive stuff here.---Bandit01

Your race has nothing to do with whether you posted "offensive stuff here" or not. Your words determine if your posts were offensive, and as far as I can see you said nothing offensive.

Respectfully,

the worse day to go to the range is fathers day, the wives let them out and all hell breaks loose, a few guys were bump firing their AK-47s, over the backstop, sheriff shows up and threatens to take everyones weapons, luckly no one was hurt, and so many shooters there my guns were still in the car waiting for a lane to free up.

Well my story isn't as drastic but it scared me.

Went to the public range. Yeah yeah, well i live in phoenix..... kinda hard to find a private range that can be used on my budget. Anyways two lanes down from me there is a few "gangsta" type people playing with their new toys. Well one of these new toys was a jamomatic 1911. I was too far away to tell what was making it jam, but when it would he would hold the gun with his finger in the trigger guard and tip it sideways, flagging me and my friends, and then drop the mag and inspect the firearm for problems......

What continent is the Nation of Asia on? :D

When the race of a person in the story is mentioned, and it has no other bearing upon the story, it can have the appearance of racism or implied bias.

But back on topic...

Last time I went to the range, the guy on the lane next to me came over with his Beretta model 92/96, (Didn't check) and asked me to help him fix it. I guess he came to me thinking I was the RSO or something because I was lecturing a new shooter I had brought with me. He was flagging everyone on my lane, and I wasn't sure if it was loaded, so I took the offered pistol and tried to figure out what was wrong with it.

I couldn't understand what he was saying, but when I tried to unload it, I realized he had the take down lever in the vertical position and the slide halfway off. He was trying to shoot it that way. Maybe he thought it was the slide release or something? I took it apart and put it back together, (Good think I vaguely remembered how to field strip the M9,) and handed it back to him. I told him to talk to the range people, but I guess he just fired his box of ammo and left.

I haven't been swept at the pistol range (that I know of), but every once in a while a guy in flip flops will show up with a Desert Eagle 50AE without hearing protection, and I just giggle.

The skeet range is a different matter. In Texas (and many other states), dove season starts 9/1. Unless I'm shooting on my league night, I avoid the range like the plague on weekends leading up to opening day. I used to go on weekends in August (just like many other weekends throughout the year), but grew tired of continually telling folks that handle their shotguns once a year to keep their actions open until they are on the station, to only load two rounds at a time, and to QUIT SWEEPING ME!!!!!!!. Once gets a stern warning. Twice gets them removed and sent home.

First, I wasn't aware that Asia was a nation...

Second, they sound more like ASSians to me.

But what do I know? I'm only a German/American indian/Irish hybrid.... ( That'd be "Mutt" to all you rednecks out there. )

the only unsafe range behaviour i've seen is when my bf's friend wanted to come shoot with us. he told us he'd shot before. there were three of us in one booth (its an indoor range) and we were taking turns shooting when the friend's gun jams, and so help me, he turns it around and LOOKS DOWN THE BARREL. my bf and i look at eachother like :what: not to mention he swept my bf in the process. it turns out he'd never shot before and just didnt want to say anything-he just pretended he knew what he was doing. after that when he called us and asked if we wanted to go to the range, we were always mysteriously busy
