Moron at the range!

Good grief -- all of these stories remind of the time I went to the range and met an asian-black-pacific islander-italian-german-frenchguy who had a nationality of polish-russian-serbian-irish-welsh. I really liked the guy since I am hugenot french, german, welsh, american-indian, english (and a few other things, I think... my ancestors were pretty horny :D ).

We both figured out we are Americans and it didn't matter. That dude could really shoot.

I use to shoot at a range North of Austin close to Fort Hood, frequented but Soldiers from that base. I thought the US Army was well trained in pistol and rifle marksmanship. Gansta style shooting with full mag ammo dumps and very few shots on target, seem like most of there training comes from TV. Very dangerous thought I was going to have to shoot a SGT with a AK on the pistol range, he was sweeping everyone and shooting the ground 5 feet in front of himself.

I've seen my fair share of LEO's and military personnel that couldn't shoot worth a caca.....heck, my beloved USAF places "so much" importance on shooting that non-combat personnel (which is probably about 99% of the USAF) shoot every 3 years.

Now what all of this hubbub about Mormons at shooting ranges?
Don't the Mormons have just as much right to use the ranges as anyone else?
Don't Mormons need to practice to keep their self defense skills sharp, just like the rest of us?
Personally I wouldn't mind if some nice Mormons showed up next to me at the range. I'd even let them try my guns. Hopefully they'd let me shoot theirs as well.
And I wouldn't even mind if these Mormons did come from Asia.
After all Asian Mormons need to learn to shoot just as much as American Mormons do.
I just can't understand all of this complaining about...

What?

What's that?

Morons? - - - He said Morons? - - - Not Mormons??

Oh! - - - Well then...

Never Mind.

But what about all of those people complaining about violets on televisions.
Now I'll admit that the top of a television isn't the best place to grow violets since the lighting is usually all wrong. But peope should have the right to raise their violets anyway thay choose...

Learning the Hard Way

Around 35 years ago... so long ago I still had hair, I would shoot from time to time at an "open" range near Winter Haven Florida.

Now, I realize I had no excuse for doing that, but the private club I belonged to was about 15 minutes farther drive and I was lazy at tmes....

Bright and early one Sunday morning I met two State Troopers I knew and we went to the "open" range to shoot... we had some new toys and were having a pretty good time trying them out.

A guy drove up in an old Ford low rider of some sort, that looked as scruffy as the guy did... about three days of beard, blood shot eyes...I should have left then....BUT... youth and lack of experience prevailed. I did think to myself this is some sort of scumbag. :barf:

So happily popping .45 acp rounds out of my then new Gold Cup I blissfully faced my fate....

BANG! the guy next to me let go a round, as I was holding the Gold Cup ready to squeeze off a round... I felt a bump in the middle of the inside of my forearm and a burning feeling... looked down and saw I was bleeding.... :what: looked to my left and there was Scumbag holding a chrome revolver still pointing at me and looking surprised... I swung my .45 to my left and alligned my sights...

At that point one of my State Trooper friends gently pointed my Gold Cup away from the Scumbag, whilst the other Trooper disarmed the shooter. :fire:

Turned out scumbag was VERY drunk, was on parole and did not own the car... why he stopped I'll never know... anyway deputies came and hauled him away.

Found out I had been hit with a .22 short in the arm... not a lot of damage done... in fact the emergency room did more damage removing the bullet than the bullet did going in... enlarged the size of the scar produced considerably but I guess you could say all's well that ends well.

I learned my lesson very well... I avoid drunks, morons, idiots, jerks and scumbags when shooting (well any time I can for that matter) since then... so a cheap lesson you could say.

FWIW

"Asisan", "Asian"...

Ahem... I think the political correct term is "Oriental".

"Asian" is a very non-descriptive and vague term, IMHO.

Asia is quite a big place; about 60 percent of the world's population lives in Asia.

Technically, both Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden are Asian.

No Shortage of Morons

I have been lucky these past 35+ years. I don't like indoor ranges and the outdoor range (state WMA) is quite good--but I use it only on Mon,Thur, and Fri and never on weekends. Some folks don't control children and I just pack it in. Some older folks never announce they are going downrange. Dumbness knows no age.

I personally don't mind the morons at the range. It makes the shooting experience more fun, challenging and realistic. I have seen some pretty wild things happen in some indoor ranges.

THAT WAS CLASSIC! I could vividly picture Gilda Radner in the role. It brought back memories of the good years of SNL. Thanks, man!

:D

Thanks 30 cal slob. I can probably get the coffee out of my shirt with some cold water but I think my keyboard may be trash.

Let me tell you, I go to great pains NOT to wear black pajamas AND sling an AK at the local full-auto shoots.

Too many VN vets on the line, would hate to risk a flashback and get whacked.

Went to one range and had new shooters on my right. Huge target VERY close the firing line is a telltale sign. At one point they put the target a little bit further out. It was possibly 6-9 feed away at this point. All of a sudden I hear a loud boom and see part of their target torn to my right. I figure they had a KABOOM. Nope, they had exploding targets taped to the paper target.

The guy in the booth to my left was hitting me with 22lr brass. I can't figure out how he managed that one.

I packed up and went home.

I find the Semi-auto .308 and .223 Mil-Surpers to be the worst..

:fire: EVERBODY that owns and AK knows it shoots bullets AND BRASS. Same with the semi .308(basicly anything with a fixed ejector). So why do these idots not cover their rifles or atleast place something inbetween them and the next shooter as case deflector :banghead: ! Nothing is better than having .308 brass flying from ~15 yards away ,and almost hitting you or your $850 gun, and having the idiot keep doing after he sees what is happening :fire: !

I feel sorry for all of you who must use public ranges.
Amen. I also feel sorry for people that don't have anything better to do than spell check everybody else's posts. I had a bad experience at a public range and decided to look hard for a private range. I was lucky to find one close by that is very safe and also has a lot of fun shoots on the weekends. It is well worth the money to keep away from the nuts.

Maybe he couldn't spell assasins?
It seems that we have a viral infection in this thread that is preventing people from correctly spelling words beginning with "as".

Asian.

Assassin.

It's about spelling, not racism.

"Move along. Move along.
Nothing to see here. Move along."

All I say to this thread is, thank God I live in the country where I don't NEED no steenkin' range!

...yet. :uhoh:

Too Many Choices!? ~

Guns make noises and throw brass. If you don't want to deal with the sound or get hit with the brass, don't go to the range.

My friends prefer to call me a gook with a machine gun.
To satisfy my drinking habits (I go through a bottle of premium tequila in about a year--regular as clockwork) I buy at a little shop on the way home. The proprietor is Vietnamese and he's got an AK variant hung on the wall behind the counter. I don't know why, but that tickles me to no end--almost worth increasing my alcohol intake so I can support his business better.

Plus, blacks cannot be racist, right?

Yeah I was scratching my head when I read that. It's like "What do you mean racist? How can I be racist, when I'm BLACK?!"

And btw of course it wasn't racist. I guess it was to those who consider "asian" to be a dirty word lol.

Noticing a pattern here...

I'm black, so maybe we just naturally have a thing against asian shooters... Of course, that was a joke for those humorly-challenged types.

Also, unsafe behavior does not = bad shooting... If I were afraid of people who couldn't shoot, I'd be afraid of all public ranges and half the people I know who own guns. Funny how those 2" groups at 15 yards that you can shoot on the internet turn into shotgun patterns at 20 ft. when you end up on the range with real people here in real life.

IIRC - I've only seen dangerous behavior twice on a public range. Call it what you want, but it's just the truth... Both times it was a large group of asians shooting. So I guess that makes me racist because the people I've seen at the range - practicing unsafe behavior - didn't look like me. :D

Granted, these folks probably aren't from here, almost surely aren't allowed gun-ownership in their home countries, and probably aren't very experienced with even the concept of private gun ownership or use... Both times, they brought their entire families to the range - kids, grandmother and all - which is something I consider REALLY inappropriate... Both times, the parties rented all guns from the range, obviously not owning or having experience with any firearms of their own.

THAT is what makes them unsafe at public ranges (doing things like turning around and talking to family members with loaded guns in hand... or my personal favorite, chasing the kids all over the range - once again - loaded gun in hand), not where they were born or what their faces or skin look like. Of course, not speaking or understanding the language that the range rules are written/spoken in can't help much either. As for avoiding these types of situations, I usually go to the range either when it first opens, or early in the week (Mondays and Tuesdays) before most folks are getting out of work.
