Moron at the range!

when i was a kid i saw a guy doing quickdraw while drinking and shoot himself in the weener.

i didnt see it happen but i saw the damage done by a guy at a indoor range who didnt know how to work the moving target set up. the target hanger is on a machine that runs it down the side of the wall and turns a 90deg and moves across the end of the range. has foot peddels to opperate the motors on the target. some guy had decided to not run the paper target out to the propper place and just opened up on it while it was back behind the bench. well that was a regular wall and on the other side was the store. displays all shot up and scattered, on both the first wall, and also on the second wall(brick wall outer building wall). lucky no one was shopping in that area of the store at the time. shook up the range employee realy bad.

Now that's just bad design on the part of the range/gunshop.
To have a public area on the other side of a wall that could possibly be shot through is just plain stoopid. (Dee Dee Dee)

You MUST consider that any surface even remotely in the firing area will probably be struck sooner or later.
You're always going to have wild shots, stray shots, ricochets and splash backs.

bluesbear,

it wasnt a very good range. and some of the employees were worse than the customers. only range ive even been to where the guy running it was drinking vodka in his slurpie.

You can't be racist if you're black? Tell that to Bill Cosby! My friend was working as a bellhop in Lake Tahoe and ended up carrying Mr. Cosby's Hugh-Jass luggage upstairs. Holding out his hand for the usual tip, good ol' Bill just smirked and said to Steve, "Yeah, thanks whitey." A couple of days later, Steve's black buddy got a tip for carrying the luggage down on Cosby's way out of town.

Mark(psycho)Phipps( HAHAHA! )

I heard the same from a ex-Temple University Cop that I worked with. Bill Cosby when to school there (not sure if he got a degree other than an honorary one) and does a lot of events with them. I think the stuff he said about the black community was because that he was embarassed by them, not that he wants to be white. This guy (who is actually black) said the apparently Cosby perferred an all black security detail when he visted the university.

Back to the topic at hand...I seen too many time where gun shops and range owners rather collect money, and not upset customers , then to educate and make sure shooters are safe.

Ever been to North Philadelphia?

That's not racism... That's just smart

I stayed with a friend who attended Temple for a year... visit the university for yourself and you'll understand why. And yes, Bill Cosby has a PhD from Temple. In what, I'm not sure.

As for Cos' comments about the black community, Bill Cosby didn't say anything unique. Black folks talk about the problems in our communities all the time. He just said it on T.V. - which is what some folks considered offensive. It's not what he said. It's the fact that he said it in a public setting that offended some folks.

"Airing out our dirty laundry in public," so to speak. Being embarassed with one's demographic, or wanting to be white has nothing to do with anything - and is offensive to even suggest. FWIW, statements like that reflect a lot of ignorance on the speaker.

Idiots at the range is the main reason I don't shoot any longer at outdoor ranges that do not have Range officers. No more rifle shooting for me unless their is a range officer. The problem is that All of the private clubs near me have unattended outdoor rifle/ pistol ranges. It is near impossible to stop unwanted people from using the ranges. It can get very hairy especialy during deer season when alot of one season hunters come to sight in their rifles, or shotguns and most don't have clue on firearm saftey. And the state has mandatory hunter saftey courses. I have seen many times, people waving there LOADED guns around, drinking beer, running down to targets without notifiying other shooters, and the worst pointing loaded guns at people as a joke. I am amazed that no one has been seriously hurt or killed. It is a lawsuit waiting to happen, and though the club officers care about the situation, and try to patrol the more often, they have no way to close off the ranges or stop unwanted visitors without putting a large fence around the 100s of acres of property and having a front gate.

few weeks ago at the 100 meter section I saw a guy try and go out to check his targets-Before the cease fire!

Guess im kinda lucky I have a big area in the back of my house to go shooting at. Never had to go to a shooting range so I really dont have any stories about hearing or seeing someone shoot themselves. I was however surfing the web a few weeks ago and came across a video of a cop who was supposed to be teaching kids to stay away from gangs and drugs. Toward the end of the video he unholstered his glock 40 dont know which model it was. Anyway he locked back the slide and then in the video you see him walk out of the videos line of sight. But you can hear him telling someone his gun is unloaded and the say yes it is. He then walks back in front of the camara with slide still open. He then presses the slide realese and starts to do some weird thing with his gun he starts pointing it toward his leg and BOOM! the gun discharges right in his leg. I do howerver have to say I think he took geting shot better than anyone has before. Simply because right after he shoots himself he asks one of the people with him to hand him a rifle an AR15 type I belive and you can hear all the kids and parents in the back ground yelling at him to put the gun down which he finally does and limps out of the area. If i could remember the site adress I would tell yall but i cant has anybody else heard of this incident?

pointing loaded guns at people as a joke
:fire:

My best friend in high school pointed a .41 Magnum at my chest and pulled the trigger with a big grin on his face.

Haven't seen him in 20 years and I could care less to ever see him again.

BoomBoom25,

The story you mentioned has been WIDELY discussed on the Internet and on this forum. It is old news. (Not trying to be a downer, just didn't want you to be disappointed when no one is surprised).

Instead of talking bad about them on the internet, have you offered any advice? Most people welcome it, ladies are more receptive than guys. Couples are a little tricky, most of the time they're decent listeners, and, as always, ladies listen better. Guys tend to have a "I dont need advice" attititude, but they somewhat listen while acting like they arent.

i vote we take off safety labels and warnings on every household product. in 2 years, stupid people will become extinct
I've been saying that for years.

My family has a farm way out in the middle of nowhere so I raley go to a range unless I dont feel like making the drive (around 45 minutes). However I have more than a few scary duck hunting stories. One time when drawing for a blind we encountered a rather bright  looking group of people one of them had brought a rifle :what: . Well we set up our decoys and were attempting to call a few in when all of a sudden we heard a gun go off beside us and water splashing. What the hell! My buddy pokes his head out of the side of the blind and quickly ducks back in just before another shot goes off. Somebodys shooting at us he says. Well at this time we kinda freaked out. My buddy leans out quickly and fires a shot at our attackers. Then we hear them yelling "dont shoot, dont shoot" to which we respond with cease your fire. Come to find out these people shooting at us were actually shooting at our decoys from their boat. Not realizing the pile of sticks in the water was our blind they had thought our decoys were actually ducks. These were the morons we had noticed at the begining of the day they were heading back after no luck (go figure) . I am just thankful the retard with the rifle didnt take a shot.

I find the Semi-auto .308 and .223 Mil-Surpers to be the worst..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EVERBODY that owns and AK knows it shoots bullets AND BRASS. Same with the semi .308(basicly anything with a fixed ejector). So why do these idots not cover their rifles or atleast place something inbetween them and the next shooter as case deflector ! Nothing is better than having .308 brass flying from ~15 yards away ,and almost hitting you or your $850 gun, and having the idiot keep doing after he sees what is happening

Yeah, the last time I and my family took our MilSurps out to the public outdoor range, we must have fired off over 42,000 rounds of .223, .308, and 7.62x39. The mountain of cases to our right was over 5 feet tall.
Problem was the poor guy shooting bench-rest precision target in the station to our right was soooo engrossed in his perfect sight picture he'd only shot once during that time and was still holding to line up for that perfect second shot...buried somewhere in all that brass....We had to dig him out with our Glock entrenching tools before he suffocated. :D

Since the $2200 preban .308 Galil is getting brass kisses, I'd say your "$850 gun" could stand a few too. You want 'em to be perfect forever? Then go to a nice snooty private range with chandeliers and brass butlers and refrigerated buttstock racks and gun patches made from 100-dollar bills. I'll take our outdoor public range (that floods whenever it rains which makes it exciting! New Terrain after every rain! And risk the Attack Geese (r) nippin yer butt! That's a combat distraction!) ANY DAY.

But I may be positively inclined because since I work third shift I go there right when they are open before it gets hot, and the ijits show up.

Hey Evan, how much do those gun patches cost at that range? If they are only a few dollars (or more even), would you pick me up as many as possible, and get them out to me if I paid for shipping?

Thanks.

an aggie joke leaps to mind.... forget it.

I try very very hard to be courteous at the range. When i shoot my cetme, i simply position myself at the far right. My old roomate was the worst he did not care where the brass fell. (till i popped him with 3 cases out the cetme:evil: )

We get the folks who show up with an AK 47 and a few drums and proceede to turn the backstop into a cloud of dust, as for our targets, eh who knows what happened.

This thread was most amusing to me.

Unsafe behavior from anyone at the range should not be tolerated.
Beware of the know-it-alls, movie quoting dopes, and supposed tough guys.
It behooves you to learn shooting range etiquette.
No matter how good a shooter you think you are, there is a high likelihood that there will be someone better than you. Be proud of your shooting skills but don't be arrogant about it.

I'm there to learn as much as to teach.

Bill Cosby has a PhD from Temple

Actually, his BA is from Temple. His Ed.D. is from Univ of Mass.

Reading the various comments makes me think of one time at the public range (I go only in the AM) when I brought the target back the rope attached to the carrier broke. Now I'm afraid they thought I'd shot it. Hopefully, they didn't think I hit the rope when it was only 1-2 feet in front of me.

BTW I admit I'm prejudice. I abhor stupid behavior. Among which is looking for and finding offense when and where none is intended. :banghead:
Draw your own conclusions.

It is stories like this about range problems made me buy body armor. I will aways wear it at the range. A little extra protection can't hurt! :what:
