I have many Mosins and am in love with them. I have everything from a 1917 Remington, to a bunch of PU's and a PE, and Finns of all flavors. Its my honest belief that people automatically assume that since the price is low that they are junk. Every Mosin I have is a tack driver, I wouldn't own one that wasn't. With just some minor tweaks they are awesome guns. Every person at the range that has scoffed and made comments like "ugh a Mosin" changes their tune when I offer to let them shoot. When they see that a cheap gun can be highly accurate the first thing they ask me is "where can I buy one?" Dont get mistaken and caught in the herd when it comes down to them. They can be fun and cheap shooters. They are actually the gun I recommend to new shooters. Ammo is cheap and abundant and so are the rifles so let them play and enjoy the future of shooting sports. Spread the passion, tell em to get a Mosin.

PS...... for those of you that reload..................... Forget about what your bore slugs out to. Try some .308 150gr Hornady ballistic tips and some 4064 powder. Although you may think that the .308 bullet is a little small you will be pleasantly surprised. This is my go to load for ALL of my Mosins not just the Finns.

BrocLuno the rifle was just a 1944 Izzy ex sniper I picked out of a crate and put a scope and mount back on. I did my little trigger tweaks and some other little minor adjustments and that was my sighting in target.

Here is 5 shots at 100 with my PE

and 5 shots at 200 with my "Monster" custom gun

For those that say they aren't accurate :neener: no need to be a hater..........

I find it amazing there there are so many different types of guns. Some people will hate something while someone else thinks it's the greatest thing on earth. I have a friend that buys these as well as any other old military rifle all day long, why I'll never know.

To me I consider them tomato stakes and wouldn't pay $5 for any of them. But that's me, someone else would jump at the chance to own one. More power to them.
What I would like to know is why?

I have a carbine, mostly to just round out my WWII carbine bunch. As far as I go; I don't like the looks, the ergos are too weird, the action is like working something dug from the trenches (though it's arsenal new) and it's ugly, but the thing I really don't like is that it is ugly - well that and it's inherent ugliness.;)

Wow, hate to hear that about your gun. My 91/30 has a super smooth action. If you rotate the bolt, you can just tip up the gun and the bullet ejects. Takes a little more than gravity to chamber the next. Doing it by hand is easy.

I am in the 'they are fun, cheap, and historical' group. Like mine. Might buy another.

LOL, I'm bringing this thread back up...love my m91/30!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smooth, fast bolt, great sights and ergonomics, and a powerful round to boot. I'll never get why people hate these fine old warhorses, but I'll always have my '42 Izhevsk on hand.

I bet after the Revolutionary War ended, there were shooters having long, heated arguments about whether the British Brown Bess Musket or the French Charleville Musket was the best and the other,of course, was just a piece of junk. Both were used by the Continental Army, along with just about anything else that could coaxed to shoot

PS. I think Morcey`s onto something here!

Soooo true!!!

I'm not Joed, but I'll take a stab at replying.

I wouldn't buy a Mosin because I've no use for them. I've got a much better gun for hunting, the Mosin is too slow, inaccurate, and generally outdated to use in any sort of practical shooting competition like 3 Gun, not accurate enough for precision sports like High Power, and insofar as WWII nostalgia goes, it can't hold a candle to an M1 Garand.

The Mosin is a great rifle if your primary factor for buying a rifle is cost.

Mine is nothing special and is MOA capable with handloads.

Cost has very little to do with it.

Why do I keep seeing the accuracy bashing? The Mosin is plenty accurate if you can shoot it!

Price was only a nice addition to it. Accuracy has never been a problem for mine, and I plan on using mine deer hunting as is. And the Mosin is only as slow as the operator, lol.

And if you really want fast, the Mosin is big enough to mount an AR on the barrel.

Well personally, I have Russian heritage. I love my 91/30 for the same reason that I love Krags, Springfields, Garands or M1 Carbines: one of my ancestors probably had to use one of these things at some point in their lives. Looks, function, even price don't really have much to do with it.

Note: my 91/30 was made in 1897... long before the darn Commies conquered the country.

They can be very accurate. The Finns used them to great effect during WWII. As recently as the 1960 Winter Olympics, the biathlon required military 7.62 mm bolt action rifles at ranges of 100, 150, 200 and 250 meters with iron sights. Soviet athletes took third, fourth and fifth places using Mosin-Nagant rifles. A Finn got the silver medal, and I would bet that he also used a Mosin-Nagant. A Swede took the gold, with a Mauser.

If it was from 1897, than it's not a m91/30, just a m91.

Odds are that an 1897 Mosin is an M91, but there are a handful of 19th century M91/30s - upgraded Dragoons.

Re: Mosin love........

Havent you ever were crazy about a chick with a great bod but maybe not such a beautiful face who had a great personality? Or maybe a woman who was a little on the chunky side but had a great personality and sex appeal?

And they were hard workers , loyal, loving and could cook or bake and even liked shooting , hunting , fishing or the outdoors? Well maybe thats why some Mosins. Ugly but reliable and always work. And some shoot really well.

Or maybe your just cheap. Or curious....? I never criticize what people like to shoot as long they are safe.

blackwalnut,

I agree with your thoughts on women......but the closest I can come to appreciating a Mosin, is a M-39.

Bought my mosin M44 for $79 at Big5.

I've hit a 6" plate at 350yd with it. Not consistently, but with iron sights and Barnaul ammo, good enough.

It's got plenty of power, is accurate enough, clean bore and most of its bluing. Decent new ammo is about $10/box locally.

Is it pretty? Heck no. Is it my favorite rifle? Not even close. Does it get comments every time i shoot it? Yes. Will it stil work when all of my other, fancier, guns have choked to death from adverse conditions? Probably. Will i ever get rid of it? Nope.

It makes me chuckle that this thread is still going. Twelve pages...wow. :p

I have to admit, since getting my C&R I've gotten close to dropping the hammer on a Mosin and a case of ammo, but I just can't quite do it.

Q
Eh, just do it, best $150 you will ever spend...shipping included.
