Sling Advice Please

Hi Folks. Not to hijack the thread, but I figure this thread is getting lots of looks. Shotgun newbie here recently got a used Mossberg 500 for home/personal defense with 18.5" barrel with Uncle Mike's QD sling mounts but missing the swivels. I have an extra USGI M1 cotton sling (1 1/4" wide with metal hardware). Should I just buy 2 swivels and use the USGI sling, or buy a new sling with swivels included? Nearby Dick's Sporting Goods has various slings from Outdoor Connections.

There's a few different models and I'm confused. If it makes any difference I'll be spending the bucks for a Surefire forend soon.

THANK YOU.

A carrying strap style sling is not hard to find. One or two of mine here are GI and work well. The HD 870 here runs close to 9 lbs, on that I like a wider strap for comfort's sake.

I have both an 870 and a 500 and I've found I prefer the 870. It just shoots better for me. I've let a friend shoot both and she liked the mossberg better. the 870 just seems to fit me better.

MedGrl-

I only own the 870. It's really easy to disassemble fully, clean fully, and reassemble. I've heard, from others who own both, that the 500 is more of a PITA.

What's your experience?

I must go boobs on this one! I have friends that have their 500's and others w/ their 870's...both seem very similar...none better than the other none worse  The one feature I like on the Mossberg is the safety...other than that it's about what you prefer or which one you get the better deal on

Mossberg is used by military.

Remington is used by law enforcement.

Both will do the trick.

It's basically comes down to the location of the slide release and the safety. Each person has a different preferance.

ArmedBear: I know you didnt ask me, but I own both aswell. They are pretty much the same as far as disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly.

Both have their little quirks and small differences but i think that the 870 is a little easier to dissassemble simply because of the location of things. Others may dissagree with me but life would be boring if we all thought the same things right?;)

Mossys for me...

Both the Mossy and the Remington are good guns but I tend to stay away from firearm manufacturers who voluntarily modify their product at the requests/pressures of anti-gunners. If congress is going to pass a law stating that you need to change your guns then that is one thing but to cave into the pressure is treason upon the 2nd Amendment, in my eyes. I can't remember which gun it is but Remington voluntarily lower the magazine capacity for political reasons when it had not been required by law. Ruger had a hand in some of the same activity (introducing some hi-cap restriction legislation in an effort 'save our guns') and so although I LOVE Rugers I have bought none since.

The one physical aspect that I think makes the Mossy better then the Remington is that working the safety is a very distinct action and is not worked with the trigger finger. From a tactical standpoint you don't want to be having to use the same finger in the same general area to work your safety and your trigger...adreline does funny things to your motor skills and your mind. That being said, a Mossy with a pistol grip stock (that is how I run all but my field Mossys, requires you to break your grip in order to disengage the safety and that is a bad thing. I have shot mine so many times that I don't even think about it but then again the safety is only one when it is unloaded and in the safe. As soon as I pull my Mossy out of the safe I switch the safety off. From a tactical standpoint I can either carry it without a round in the chamber (kinda dumb since racking the gun is going to give away your position and cost you valuable time) or I use my brain and my finger as the safety. The last thing I want to do is come on target for a shot and be surprised by the safety. Since I always slide the safety off when I pull it out of the safe than I always know what condition it is in. (This only applies to my shotguns...I carry my pistols cocked and locked so the safety is always on...for the same reason...I don't have to think about it; I know what condition it is in.)

just my two cents

I own and like them both.870's seem to kick less due to the steel recievers but I do believe they will both outlast anyone and only our grandkids will eventually find out which is the best.tom.

Over 50 years old and this bad boy is still going strong.

My buddy of mine had a Mossy 500 when we were kids, anyhow, he got it used, it was well worn and it fired thousands of rounds while shooting trap and birds...then one day it broke shooting a slug. The internals were damaged by the shell. $20 later and it was fixed and out on the hunt. I say got for what feels best, they both work, that being said I am a 870 fanatic. I will not own any other pump shotgun because the Rem. is perfect IMO.

870 vs 500

I have owned several of both shotguns in many different variations. The 500 is cheaper and a perfectly functional shotgun. BUT. The 870 is made out of better allows and materials in general, especially the hunting models. The low end models are closer to being equal but the 870 still edges it out just a little. No matter what, THEY ARE BOTH QUALITY WEAPONS!

Keep your weapon clean and your powder dry and life is good! :D

two differences in my opinion that actually mean anything. first, where the controls are because comfort is important. second, 500 mag tubes are customer replaceable, 870 has to go to the factory if it gets dented. i prefer the location of the slide release on the 500 and i want a gun i can work on myself. i hate to have to rely on shipping my gun somehwhere.

the rest is a tie.

quality is the same, or close enough. its an unwinable argument, so lets call it a tie.

fore end rattle, new 870's rattle too so lets put that argument to bed too. its a tie.

looks are rooted in opinion. unwinable argument. its a tie.

its a tie.

its a tie.

its a tie.

its a tie.

The Remington 870,is undoubtably one of the finest and most reliable pump-action shotguns, ever made. I am very happy with its overall performance, both as a clay gun and as a practical competition gun-despite the snobbish behaviour of some shotgunners,in the UK.

The 870,has had good reviews, over the years, from shooting journalists, who have used the gun for clay and PSG events.

The Mossberg 500,is cheaper than the 870,but is still a decent enough shotgun, for most uses.
