Mossberg MVP 7.62x51mm rifle ?

Well, I took the leap and purchased one today from Cabela's. Metal work is great, action is smooth. The stock is a little square shaped up front, but I can get used to it. Factory mag fits well, Pmags have some front back wobble, but substantial pressure in both directions does not inhibit feeding at all (seems like an AK mag, it wobbles but affects nothing). The USGI M14 mags fit superbly. I'll try to get out tomorrow to crack off a few rounds for sight in at 50 yards. I'll get some pics up too. :) I like it currently, if it shoots well, it will be a keeper. Name another rifle that can use 2 different platforms magazines....

I have to say, that is really cool how they made it work with both of the most common patterns of .308 box mags. Give us a range report once you get a chance to get some rounds down the tube, will ya?

Like everything else firearms related, some will love it, some won't. For a $500 rifle, I don't expect a whole lot. But what you get for $500 seems pretty decent. I don't know about a 20 round mag on a bolt gun. But if it accepts a 10 rnd, decent trigger, 1.5-2 MOA, I might have a new brush/hog gun for my buddies to take.

My trigger measures a crisp 3.5lbs. I slapped a 3-9 older Pentax on it and I will see how it does tomorrow. Gonna sight in with trashy Tula and group with PPU 168gr match (kinda wonky quality control, but these 2 loads are the only ones I have on hand).

You said you were going to shoot it tomorrow, yesterday. Now today has come and you're saying to wait until tomorrow again. I hope this isn't going to become a habit.

??? I said that today, 6 hours ago ???. 6 hours ago is not yesterday, lol.

MVP

I have two MVP's in 223 a 24 inch and 20 inch the 24 has around 1200 rounds down it and it shoots under .500 @ 100 yards the 20 inch I got it as a gift for Christmas and I have not shot it to much Great little guns DD

Sounds interesting Jackal.

Could you take a few close up pics of the magwell?

I would like to see how they designed it to get the rifle to accept the SR25/P-mag,and the M14 mags.

Which model of MVP 762 did you buy?

Is yours the 16in bbl "Patrol" by any chance?

Questions:

1) Who makes the MVP action and barrel, is this a rebranded Howa?

2) If it is a Howa, does it have their excellent two stage trigger, or did they keep the 223 MVP's accutrigger clone? That sear in the middle of the trigger bugs me, I wish Savage/Mossberg would have just made it a conventional two-stage trigger...

It used to bother me too, but I don't even notice it now. Its still basically a 2 stage, light take up and crisp click. I also have a Marlin X7 and a Savage .22 that both have the Accutrigger (Marlin and Mossberg both have a different name for it, but c'mon, its an Accutrigger). The trigger action on the Mossberg is better than that of the Savage or the Marlin. The Marlin, even with the Accutrigger is still kind of mushy/inconsistent, whereas the Savage is sort of in between, being ok for a .22.

I just wish it had better sights. I am not a fan with how far forward the sights are on it.

Unlike Ruger, they continue to ignore left-handers with the MVP series. Whether it's the expense, the lack of care, or the loss of only 10% it's a non-starter for me.

I really like this concept (and I'd love to be able to get one of those Australian Enfields), but, like some others, I would prefer an 18-20 inch barrel and the iron sights mounted at the rear of the receiver. What I really don't like, though, is that they don't have the laminated stock option for the version with the iron sights.

Actually, there was another bolt gun that fed from M1A mags, however it was a special run of Mauser action bolt guns (Parker-Hale M85 ring a bell?) for the sniper rifle contract for the UK back in the 90s, which was won by Accuracy International.
In regards to this rifle however. I pose the question to anyone who has a bolt gun, "is it still factory stock?" followed by "what have you changed?". They use a lock-nut system like the Savage (interesting to find out the shank thread dimensions) making re-barreling a home job with headspace gauges. Comes with a scope mount (another normal purchase) pre-threaded barrel with flash-hider (removable and replaceable with my favored 7.62 brake from surefire) 1-10 twist (220 grain sub-sonic anyone?) and feeds from PMAGs and M1A mags?!?!?! What can't you do to this rifle? Pick any other platform, do these modifications and come out to twice the price tag...I dare you. How many of you stared at your remington/savage/winchester and a AR/M1A mag and said "Hmmmm...I wonder". Mossberg did it, hats off to them.
