What caliber is used the most in competition? Which one can you get the most out of after tweeking a bit. I have always been a .308 guy, but the .223 is growing a lot over the years. After watching some comps., on the TV it's obvious they are not .308. Thanks

What kinda competition? I haven't shot any High Power matches or anything like that, but the local range down here has a monthly rifle match, some classes let you shoot any caliber you bring in a semi auto or bolt gun, and then there's service caliber classes restricted to 223 or 308.

I suppose it depends on the yardage.
If you are going to reach out to 1000 yards you might want a flatter shooting round like 300 Winmag.

308 is the best all around target round because it does so much IMHO. But it does have a trajectory like a rainbow.

But for varmit shooting 223 is really nice.

Try the 6mm PPC round. It's held the record for a long time...

also 6mm PPC. runs out of stead @ about 300yrds though. not much knock down. whick why i want .308mag 4 1000yrd wrk

If you're talking pure accuracy at 100/200 yards, it would have to be the 6PPC.

You might want to consider the .222 for another exceptionally accurate cartridge. It held most of the benchrest records before the .22PPC and 6PPC arrived on the scene. The .222 is more accurate than the .223, with only 100 per second less muzzle velocity. It's a great varmint round out to about 225 yards. the only real problem being there aren't that many rifle manufacturers that offer that caliber.

Safe shooting.

Yeah, the .222, The 22PPC, 6mm PPC and the 6.5mm-284 are all renown for exceptional accuracy. Of course, there is the school of thought (which I subscribe to) that says there is no inheirantly accurate calibers. Just some calibers, possibly to the volume dictated, are typically held to lower standards during the manufacturing process. The 22 Hornets and K Hornets are not typically listed among the most accurate cartridges but I have a friend that has a K Hornet which he probably has $1,500 in minus optics that is so accurate it's scary. A good barrel with a proper crown and a tight chamber based on the OAL of your load and carefully made handloads should make for a very accurate rifle regardless of cartridge.

What competition? The caliber of the gun is only one factor in rifle accuracy. I don't have much experience in rifle competition, but I've shot a lot of good rifles and have some opinions. The most accurate centerfire I've ever had is a .222 Remington. For reaching out a bit further with more smack, the .308 has been good for me...my 20 year old M700VS holds close to 1/2 moa with its pet loads. But when a pal asked me to recommend the best out of the box rifle for pure accuracy I urged him to get a 6mm PPC (I think Sako had one catalogued at the time.) And my brother -in -law has a rimfire outfit that will shoot in the high two's (tenths) at 50 yards all day...that's a half-minute and just what you need for rimfire benchrest.
You don't get match accuracy with an out-of -the-box hunting gun, but sometimes a bit of tweaking will yeild gratifying results.
I'm no Camp Perry shooter. If I were, I'd go with what everyone else uses, from the best 'smithy I could afford to patronize. I gurss that would be a .223 Remington or one of the .30's. Can't argue with success.
